CEO Perspective – Cheryl Wilson
It has been a joyous holiday season for the seniors and staff of St. Paul's, with
LUV gift bags, an elegant champagne Board Dinner served by staff and Board
members, Resident appreciation checks, and as many parties and events as
could be squeezed in. The calendar was bursting!
In 2011, we served over 800 seniors and 100 children in our programs and
communities! The San Diego Business Journal recently ranked
St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services as the 17th largest non-profit agency in San
Diego County. We are proud to be ranked the largest local non-profit senior
service provider in the County and we will continue to provide quality and
innovative care for years to come.
Despite ongoing Medicare and Medi-Cal budget cuts that directly affect our ability to care for seniors
in the last years of their lives, St. Paul’s will be expanding in 2012. With your help, PACE South Bay is
opening in early summer and will serve hundreds of seniors that need coordinated medical and social
services. However, PACE is just one of the many growing programs at St. Paul’s. St. Paul's Villa is almost
at full census because of the increased need for Memory Care services, while the community continues to
benefit from our Senior Day Program (which serves seniors with beginning stages of dementia in a joyful
environment). Finally, the childcare program is bursting at the seams and being expanded!
This will be an active year for St. Paul’s and the seniors we serve. Thank you for being such a large part of
our success, and we look forward to sharing our future with you all.
Legislative Breakfast Focuses on Homeless Seniors
St. Paul’s hosted its annual Legislative Breakfast for city,
county, state, and national elected officials and their staff
on December 2nd at the Community Care Center Café. The
purpose of the breakfast was to honor local legislators and
highlight the pressing social issues concerning senior service
providers.
St. Paul's CEO, Cheryl Wilson, welcomed the guests and
discussed St. Paul’s current advocacy focus, which included
budget cuts for senior services and PACE (Program of Allinclusive
Care for the Elderly) services.
Rep. Bob Filner was honored for his work on homeless
senior Veterans’ issues and graciously accepted a plaque
acknowledging his support of this vulnerable senior population. City of Chula Vista Mayor, Cheryl Cox,
was also honored for her support to bring PACE to the South Bay area.
Jack Christy, Vice-President of Public Policy for Aging Services of California, and Peter Hansel,
Executive Director for CalPACE, were the keynote speakers. They outlined some of the recent budget cuts
to Medi-Cal and Medicare and talked about more cuts in the pipeline for senior services in California,
which may also affect the PACE model of care.
“We, like many other organizations, have been affected by budget cuts,” said Cheryl. “We need to keep an
open dialogue with our elected officials about what makes fiscal sense for our most vulnerable seniors.”
St. Paul's Recognizes Special Employees
St. Paul’s held it's annual Resident Appreciation
events for staff in each of the various communities
and programs in December. These events mark the
time that Residents and Participants can publicly
acknowledge and thank staff for their hard work
throughout the year. During the events this year St.
Paul's recognized 15 employees who were celebrating
their second anniversaries, eight whom had been here
five years, two who served 10 years, three celebrating
their 15th anniversaries and Tony Abril who marked
his 20th anniversary at St. Paul's!
With PACE coming to the South Bay later this spring,
St. Paul's Senior Homes & Services will have over 300
employees serving seniors in San Diego County. "Our employees position St. Paul's as an outstanding
senior service provider in the San Diego region", said Cheryl Wilson. "They make the difference for our
seniors."

Priscilla Fleischans - Volunteer Tribute
St. Paul’s is sad to announce the passing of Priscilla Fleishans on
Thanksgiving Day 2011. Since 1999, Priscilla served as a volunteer driver
for the Residents at St. Paul’s Manor, taking them to their doctor’s appointments
and the stores for their shopping. Priscilla always had a smile on
her face that lit up the room and an angelic spirit about her that was very
comforting. She was adored by both the Residents and staff. “I appreciate
the relationship Priscilla had with me and my wife Jean,” said Joe Peterson,
a Manor Resident. She was always trying to be available to help and
satisfy the physical needs of the people at the Manor. With no exception,
she was always volunteering for the betterment of the Residents.”
Priscilla constantly gave thanks to be able to share her time with the Residents. St. Paul’s is thankful for
such a wonderful lady serving the seniors throughout the years.
“I will definitely miss her,” said Stewart Gaddy, Volunteer Coordinator. “Especially during the annual
Volunteer Appreciation Picnic which is held in April. That was her birthday.”

St. Paul's Recognized for Outstanding Assisted Living Services
Every summer the Union Tribune conducts an online poll on the "Best Of" San Diego. Under 'Healthy
Living', St. Paul's Villa was recognized as one of the best Assisted Living Communities in San Diego. “This
recognition is a testament to the wonderful care and attention our staff provides Residents and families
every day,” said Villa Administrator, Justin Weber. For more information, please visit
Veterans Day at St. Paul's and in the Community
Did you know that St. Paul’s has 80 staff, Residents, senior Participants, and parents of Child Care
Participants who are veterans? They’ve covered all branches of the military: Army, Navy, Air Force,
Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, Merchant Marine, Women’s Army Corps, and Women Accepted
for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). Some have had tours of duty in WWII, Korea, Vietnam,
Afghanistan and more.
St. Paul’s celebrated Veterans Day with a ceremony that honored our
veterans. Stewart Gaddy, U.S. Navy veteran and St. Paul’s Volunteer
Coordinator, handed out certificates to each veteran in every
community throughout St. Paul’s. He also showed WWII: The Music
Video, Volume 2.
St. Paul’s staff and the greater community also got involved with
Veterans Day. Over several weeks, staff donated toiletries to support
the 2nd Annual St. Paul’s Comfort Care Drive to benefit Veterans Village of San Diego. On Veterans Day,
St. Paul’s Manor Residents conducted a “packing party” to create 150 care packages full of items like new
undergarments, toothpaste, and soap. The comfort packages were given to homeless veterans over the
holidays through the Veterans Village of San Diego winter shelter program. It’s estimated that 30 to 40%
of San Diego County’s homeless are veterans.
St. Paul's Employees Have Talent
St. Paul’s Manor Residents witnessed a collection of talent not seen from employees that serve them every
day of the year! A line-up of music, dance, and comedy from waitstaff, receptionists, and administrators
showed off their talent to over 50 Residents in the LUV
Lounge this fall.
Employee performers included: Justin Weber, Villa
Administrator, who played guitar and sang a modern
ballad; Debby Reaza, Dietary Director, and her group,
the Ramona Rocketts, performed Elvis’ "G.I. Blues"; the
Admissions Team, who sang “Mr. Sandman”; Alison
Dunn, Villa Activity Coordinator, who played a ukulele
and sang; and Stewart Gaddy, Foundation Coordinator,
and his wife who danced to “Thriller”.
“It’s great to have employees show off their other talents”, said Manor Resident Jim Campbell. “We were
definitely entertained.”

Holiday Season Happenings
St. Paul's is very fortunate to have the community spread holiday cheer
to our seniors. Early in December, volunteers from
Jack in the Box spent an afternoon decorating St. Paul’s Villa and
turned it into a winter wonderland that would make Santa proud.
Afterwards, they served hot cider, cocoa, scones and cookies to the
Residents. “Volunteering at the Villa was a very rewarding experience
and we were very pleased to have had the opportunity to visit with the
Residents and give a little back”, said volunteer Sherri Sanchez.
Every year on Christmas Eve, staff and their family members play the
role as “Santa’s Elves” and deliver hundreds of holiday gift bags to the
residents while they are sleeping. In order to fill over 500 Christmas
gift bags given to St. Paul’s Residents and Participants, two volunteer “stuffing parties” were organized.
Volunteers from Morgan Stanley, Love Uniting Volunteers, Allied PRA and the Foundation prepared
the gift bags in record time. “We had a wonderful time and it was a pleasure to help", said volunteer
Janifer Rizzuto of Morgan Stanley. "I could see a sparkle in the eyes of our senior neighbors as we sang
Christmas carols. It was an honor to lend a hand and bring joy to them. We’re looking forward to our
next event.”
A special thanks to Marie Tuthill, Joyce Frye and Shirley Knox for their generous donations towards the
goodies in the gift bags. Also, thanks to the Road Runner Company for the beautiful calendars, the
Ohr Shalom Synagogue for the Hanukkah gift bags for the Jewish Residents and Participants, and
Mary Kay for the gift bags to Senior Day Participants. St. Paul's PACE would like to thank the
Rancho Bernardo Girl Scouts for providing and handing out 200 gift bags for PACE Participants.
Stewart Gaddy, Volunteer Coordinator, and his wife, Cynthia, continued their tradition of hosting a staff
holiday gathering with hot cider and cookies in the Community Care Center Café. This year was extra
special because Carol Hubbard and Justin Weber performed “White Christmas” for Child Care and
Senior Day Participants. Justin played the guitar and Carol played the saxophone. It was a joyous occasion
for everyone just two days before Christmas.
PACE Executive Director Recognized As Outstanding
Business Woman in Community
St. Paul’s PACE Executive Director, Carol Hubbard, was recognized
as a finalist at the 18th Annual "Women Who Mean" Business
Awards. "Carol’s empowering management style has allowed her
team to grow professionally, take on new and challenging projects,
and care for a very frail population. Carol has done amazing things
for the PACE program", said Cheryl Wilson. “It’s an honor to have
her on the team and for the greater community to recognize her
importance to the seniors of San Diego.”

Culture Change and Renovations at the McColl Health Center
Culture Change is a model of person-centered care, which transforms
a medical community into a supportive home-like environment for the
Residents. Within that model, Residents’ needs and preferences come
first, so they have more control in their daily lives. St. Paul's has been on
the Culture Change journey for 3 years now, and continues to plan for
the future.
"In a nursing home community like St. Paul's McColl Health Center, we
recognize that Residents are no longer living in the comforts of their own
home. That's why we make every effort to create a home-like environment," said Lisa Hanthorn, Director
of Nursing. "Our goal is to rekindle the feelings of independence and choice that our Residents once had.
Culture Change is instrumental in allowing us to accomplish that, along with our continued effort to make
our Residents feel as comfortable as possible."
Through several charitable gifts, St. Paul's has upgraded all of the Resident rooms with new electric beds,
furniture, televisions, and decor. Later this year, we will remodel the nurse's station, install phones in all
rooms, and modernize our dining/activity room space that will feature a bistro. Please feel free to visit and
see our ongoing improvements to make the McColl Health Center feel less institutional and more homelike.
LUV Update
With the new year comes new opportunities for community involvement, so
now is a great time to become a member of LUV (Love Uniting Volunteers),
St. Paul’s auxiliary that supports our seniors. LUV holds their membership
drive on February 14th, and this is when the activities begin! LUV is looking
forward to some fresh activities and sticking with what has worked well for
almost thirty years.
Because of the demand, we are increasing ice cream socials for St. Paul's
Residents from four to six. We also have high aspirations for attendance and
and fundraising goals at the St. Paul's LUV Gala on August 25 th . You will
St. Paul’s PACE to Open Center in the South Bay
The building looks like an eyesore. It's been vacant for well over 2 years and neglect has taken it's toll. But
where some people see a graffiti-tagged blight on community, we see a thriving PACE Center where frail
seniors receive important healthcare services they need.
That's the dream we shared on November 17th with over 100
guests as we gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony at
603 L Street, the site of the next PACE site. Several members of
the PACE team manned their stations throughout the building
to explain to guests why the PACE model of care is so effective
in transforming the lives of the frail elderly. Transportation,
nutrition, social services, and physical therapy. All play a roll in
helping the elderly live rewarding, healthy lives.
Pat Ford, "The Father
of PACE" in San Diego
New PACE Site
Once the program reaches capacity, the new PACE site will create
over 50 new jobs and serve 275 seniors. That's 275 low-income and
very frail seniors receiving wrap-around medical and social services,
warm, nourishing meals, opportunities to socialize with others and a
number of home-based supports. And because of PACE, a majority of
them will remain living independently and safely in their community,
and out of nursing homes.
“Opening a new PACE site in the South Bay is the right thing to do”,
said Board Emeritus, Pat Ford. “We’ve already seen the importance
of this program for the frail elderly living in the city centre, and now
seniors in the South Bay will have the same coordinated care services
that will help them live independently with dignity, and choice.”
Between pre-development, construction and equipment costs, it will take over $4.5 million to convert the
existing structure in Chula Vista into a thriving PACE Center. St. Paul's fundraising efforts have raised
over $500,000 through the generous support of individuals and organizations.
Save the Date and Meet the LUV Gala Chair!
The 29 th annual St. Paul’s LUV Gala is Saturday, August 25 th at Paradise Point Resort & Spa. This year’s theme is
Endless Summer of LUV.
Marilyn MacNair, the 2012 LUV Gala Chair, is a remarkable interior
designer and has been involved with St. Paul’s in some capacity since
the early 1990s. After helping design the dining room at the Manor, she
quickly fell in love with St. Paul’s and the mission to care for San Diego’s
seniors.
Marilyn’s work has been featured throughout the communities of
St. Paul’s. These days, she is a Design Consultant for the Health Care
Group and St. Paul’s. Marilyn, a San Diego native and alumna of SDSU,
can often be seen exploring Balboa Park.
In 2011, she joined the 2011 LUV Gala Committee and was definitely a
“mover and shaker.” When asked if she would Chair the very important
fundraising event for 2012, Marilyn said that, “Volunteering for the 2011
LUV Gala was just plain fun...I can't wait to do it again!"
