CLEANTECH IN SWEDEN In Sweden, a national initiative has been launched that aims to help bolster Swedish cleantech companies in the BRIC countries. The Business Region Göteborg network, together with Business Sweden, has been tasked with leading the business development program. BooSTINg SWEDISH CLEANTECH IN THE BRIC CouNTRIES The four BRIC countries–Brazil, Russia, India, and China–have enjoyed strong economic growth in recent years. Together, they have accounted for a significant share of global growth. “There are major opportunities for Swedish companies to increase their exports to the BRIC countries. This initiative shows that there is a growing commitment among Swedish companies to seize these opportunities,” says Sweden’s Minister for IT and Energy, Anna-Karin Hatt. Now Swedish stakeholders also want to bolster Swedish cleantech companies’ chances of success in the BRIC countries. Business Sweden and the regional cleantech networks Cleantech Öster- götland, Stockholm Cleantech, Teknikdalen Foundation, and Green Business Region are also supporting the initiative, with Business Region Göteborg acting as its project manager. The project is financed through the Swed- ish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth’s Miljödriven Tillväxt (environment-driven growth) program. “We initiated this campaign because we saw that there was a need among [Swedish] companies. Through the program, we aim to give small- and medium-sized Swedish businesses the opportunity to improve their competitiveness and develop their business in these emerging markets,” says Bernt Svensén, project manager for cleantech companies’ international relations at Business Region Göteborg. Sixty Swedish cleantech companies will be invited to participate in the project. Twenty of these companies will be given the opportunity to obtain a business development check for internationalization for SEK 250,000 per company. Facts: BRIC BRIC stands for Brazil, Russia, India, and China–four large and fast-growing emerging markets. The term was coined in a report by investment bank Goldman Sachs in 2001. The four countries do not form an economic union, however. Combined, BRIC countries cover over 25 percent of the Earth’s land area and are home to about 40 percent of the world’s population.
