Prevent Summer Learning Loss–Sign Up for Our Summer Reading Program
The Summer Reading Program at Chelsea District Library is an annual program that brings children
and families into the library for reading and events. Over 1300 of the 2700 students in the Chelsea
School District participated in the program in 2012! The numbers are equally impressive on a national
level; in fact, more kids take part in public library summer reading programs than play Little League
baseball. This is good news for public libraries as we work toward improving children’s reading skills as
well as increasing their desire to read.
The bad news is that statistics also point to the frustrating loss of learning that takes place when
children are not in school during the summer. This is what researchers have often referred to as the
“summer slide.” Here are some critical facts to consider:
Prevent “summer slide” ! Sign up for this year’s Summer Reading Program–Dig into Reading! The library is helping close the reading
gap by providing children and teens access to high–quality reading materials, as well as opportunities to improve literacy skills. The
library’s Summer Reading Program is essential to the reading achievement of many children, particularly those children who lack
other reading resources.
» Learning or reading skill losses during the summer months are cumulative. By the time a struggling
reader reaches middle school, summer reading loss has accumulated to a two–year lag in reading
achievement.
» It is estimated that the “summer slide” accounts for as much as 85% of the reading achievement gap between lower income students
and their middle–and upper–income peers.
» Third graders who can’t read on grade level are four times less likely to graduate by age 18 than a proficient reader.
» Studies show that making sure there are always interesting books at home can increase the likelihood of a child being a frequent
reader.
Interested in Volunteering?
New website tool will help volunteers connect with Chelsea nonprofit organizations
Chelsea is a vibrant community with a wide variety of
nonprofit organizations and service groups. Whether
you’re looking for ways to connect with friends and
neighbors, to share your knowledge or skills, or to help
your local community, there are many volunteer opportunities
in Chelsea. This spring, a new web tool for connecting
nonprofit organizations and interested volunteers
was launched on the chelseamich.com community
website.
The brand new Volunteer Chelsea portal will help connect
potential volunteers with nonprofits in the community
who have opportunities available. Local residents are able to search for volunteer opportunities by type, such as health and wellness,
outdoor recreation, social services or the arts. Nonprofit organizations in Chelsea are able to list available opportunities for volunteers
to engage with their organization. Get connected now at chelseamich.com/connect/volunteer/.
The Volunteer Chelsea portal is funded by a grant from the Chelsea Area Wellness Foundation as part of the 5–Healthy Towns initiative. The portal was
developed as part of the chelseamich.com website—the official website for the Chelsea, Michigan community—and is a joint project by the Chelsea Area
Chamber of Commerce, with funding from the DDA and the City of Chelsea. The Volunteer Chelsea portal was led by a subcommittee of volunteers including
Trinh Pifer (Director of Chelsea Senior Center), Linda Ballard (Assistant Director of Chelsea District Library), Leslie Surel (Director of chelseamich.com) and
Mike Erwin, a long–time Chelsea volunteer who first brought the idea of this project to the members of the Chelsea Wellness Committee.
STOP SUMMER SLIDE
Did you know that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward?
According to a report from the National Summer Learning Association, “A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is
approximately two months or roughly 22 percent of the school year. It’s common for teachers to spend at least one month re–
teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. That month of re–teaching eliminates a month that could have
been spent on teaching new information and skills.” –(Reading Is Fundamental, www.rif.org)
HERE ARE A FEW SPECIAL PROGRAMS TO HELP STOP SUMMER SLIDE!
KIDS!
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE A
READING
BUDDY?
What is the Read to Your Library
Buddy program?
A free program that pairs children with a
teen or adult volunteer for a fun, stressfree
reading session. Our volunteers
are trained to help the reader feel
comfortable while reading aloud.
Why read aloud?
Reading aloud is one of the best ways to
improve your reading skills!
10 Summer
When do the Reading Buddies meet?
Meet with your buddy here at the
Chelsea District Library on Thursdays,
from June 13–July 25 (except for July
4th), for a 15 minute session, between
2-3:30pm in the Youth Department.
How old do you have to be to join?
All readers are welcome to read with a
Reading Buddy.
How do I sign up?
Stop by the 1st Level Information Desk,
or call 475-8732, x4, to sign up for a 15
minute session today!
Did we mention there would be prizes?
Each time you read for 15 minutes with
your buddy, you earn a small prize and
get an extra Summer Reading Grand
Prize Drawing Slip. Come to all six
Reading Buddy sessions in June and July
and earn a special prize!
Just so you know…
Our Reading Buddy volunteers are
trained to listen and encourage and
read at the level of their buddies. They
are NOT tutors, nor will they be teaching
reading.
The goal of the Read to Your Library Buddy
Program is to help children gain confidence
and strengthen their reading skills by reading
aloud to a trained teen or adult volunteer. See
the TeenSpace page for information on how to
volunteer.
