Summer Reading Program Kicks Off June 7!

Did you know that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward?
According to a report from the National Summer Learning Association, “A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is
approximately two months or roughly 22 percent of the school year. It’s common for teachers to spend at least one month re–
teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. That month of re–teaching eliminates a month that could have
been spent on teaching new information and skills.” –(Reading Is Fundamental, www.rif.org)

What is the Read to Your Library
Buddy program?
A free program that pairs children with a
teen or adult volunteer for a fun, stressfree
reading session. Our volunteers
are trained to help the reader feel
comfortable while reading aloud.
Why read aloud?
Reading aloud is one of the best ways to
improve your reading skills!

When do the Reading Buddies meet?
Meet with your buddy here at the
Chelsea District Library on Thursdays,
from June 13–July 25 (except for July
4th), for a 15 minute session, between
2-3:30pm in the Youth Department.
How old do you have to be to join?
All readers are welcome to read with a
Reading Buddy.
How do I sign up?
Stop by the 1st Level Information Desk,
or call 475-8732, x4, to sign up for a 15
minute session today!
Did we mention there would be prizes?
Each time you read for 15 minutes with
your buddy, you earn a small prize and
get an extra Summer Reading Grand
Prize Drawing Slip. Come to all six
Reading Buddy sessions in June and July
and earn a special prize!
Just so you know…
Our Reading Buddy volunteers are
trained to listen and encourage and
read at the level of their buddies. They
are NOT tutors, nor will they be teaching
reading.
The goal of the Read to Your Library Buddy
Program is to help children gain confidence
and strengthen their reading skills by reading
aloud to a trained teen or adult volunteer. See

child. The first half hour is for parents
only (while your children play and do a
craft with librarians) and in the second
half hour, we all come together to make
our own books (pre–K and K), or read
together (1st–3rd graders).
