Basic computer operation and mouse skills needed for all technology workshops. TECHNOLOGY Quick Bytes Workshops We are introducing a new format for our technology workshops. The Quick Bytes format will focus on a very specific topic that can be covered in one session. They are designed to give you a quick introduction to the topic allowing more time for questions. We are always open for suggestions, so please submit your ideas to Ron Andrews, Technology Librarian at randrews@chelseadistrictlibrary.org. Quick Bytes: Introduction to Antivirus/Firewall Software and Protection Monday, June 3 | 6:30–8pm Learning Lab | Registration Required This workshop will introduce antivirus and firewall software for users to protect their personal home computers. Information will be provided on various software packages, implementation and best practices for safe computing. Quick Bytes: Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2010 Monday, June 17 | 6:30–8pm Learning Lab | Registration Required Monday, August 5 | 6:30–8pm Learning Lab | Registration Required Please only sign up for one session. This workshop will be a basic introduction to the Microsoft Excel 2010 application software using demonstrations with a question & answer session. Participants will learn the basic ribbon functions, cell formatting and basic formula creation. Quick Bytes: Introduction to LinkedIn Monday, July 8 | 6:30–8pm Learning Lab | Registration Required This workshop will introduce participants to the business/ nonprofit social network site LinkedIn. The workshop will 6 Summer demonstrate how to sign up for an account, basic account settings, and best practices. Quick Bytes: Introduction to Downloading and Saving Digital Photographs Monday, July 22 | 6:30–8pm Learning Lab | Registration Required This workshop will introduce participants to the process of downloading their digital pictures from a camera or storage media to a personal computer. Options for storage will also be discussed. One–on–One Computer Help First and Third Tuesdays June 4 & 18, July 2 & 16, Aug. 6 & 20 10am–12pm Learning Lab | Registration Required Have a general question about your computer system? Our computer volunteers are on hand to answer questions about computers, the Internet, Microsoft applications and other technology topics. We also have volunteers that can help answer Apple/ Mac questions. Bring your device and your questions. Wireless access is available. To register for One–on–One Computer Help, go to chelsea.lib.mi.us and click on the Calendar from the library homepage, then choose the One–on–One Computer Help session you would like to attend. You can also register by calling or coming into the library. Registration is very important so that we can prepare for your questions with enough volunteers. Ancestry Aficionados Last Tuesdays | June 25, July 30, Aug. 27 10am–12pm Learning Lab| Registration Required Join fellow family history enthusiasts and gather for open research and study. Expert volunteers will be on hand to answer genealogy, record searching, and computer questions. Check out our installation of Ancestry Library Edition, HeritageQuest and our own Stories of Chelsea website at www.storiesofchelsea.org. Become a CPU Volunteer Are you good with computers? Do you enjoying helping others? If so, becoming a CPU volunteer could be a rewarding volunteer position for you. CPUs assist patrons during our One- on-One Computer Help sessions twice monthly, help teach technology workshops, and assist the Technology Librarian and Network Administrator with various projects from time to time. TeenSpace Teen Summer Reading Game Beneath the Surface Find deeper truths–by reading a book! Register during our Summer Reading Kickoff on Friday, June 7 or anytime after, and start reading! Get a free Nino pizza from Cottage Inn just for signing up. For every hour you read, you get an entry into our Grand Prize Drawing. After reading five, 10 and 15 hours, you get mini–buttons, free bowling at Chelsea Lanes, or $5 off library fines! Keep on reading! After 20 hours, you get a free teen novel! This year’s grand prizes include: Two $100 gift certificates to Amazon.com! All entries are due by 12pm on July 31st. Winners will be announced at 3pm, after the Summer Reading Finale. Dig Deeper – Volunteer at the Library! Looking for an inventive volunteer opportunity? Sign up for the Youth Service Group, a crew of teens going into grades 7 and up that help make youth and teen programs run smoothly all summer long. Make new friends, learn workplace skills, and fulfill that community service requirement. If you’re looking for a challenge, special leadership opportunities will be available! Go to the teen blog for your sign up forms, and attend one of our special orientation events! Dungeons & Dragons Weekly Gaming Night Tuesdays & Thursdays | 3:30–7:30pm KidSpot | Drop–In | Ages 12+ Dungeons and Dragons isn’t just fun, it’s challenging! Build your character, solve puzzles, battle monsters, and find treasure. New and experienced gamers are welcome! Most Tuesdays and Thursdays, see online calendar for exceptions. Youth Service Group Party Thursday, Aug. 1 | 1–3pm TBD | Registration Required Youth Service Group Members Only This year teen volunteers will vote on their favorite option: A movie party at Quality 16, a Bowling Party at Chelsea Lanes, or something else entirely! TEENS ! BE A READING BUDDY READ WITH ME! This new Youth Service Group (YSG) opportunity pairs young readers with a teen or adult volunteer for a fun, stress–free reading session. Listen to your younger buddy read to you every Thursday during Summer Reading, and qualify for unique prizes! Reading Buddies must attend the June 6th Read to Your Library Buddy Volunteer Training and fill out the YSG Application by Thursday, June 13. After turning in your forms, all you need is a love of reading, patience, and a desire to help children. Read to Your Library Buddy Volunteer Training Thursday, June 6 | 3:30–4:30pm McKune Room | Registration Required Ages 12–Adult, or entering 7th Grade & Up This mandatory training by Lisa Kaemming, Reading Specialist at North Creek Elementary, will teach volunteers how to help children choose a book at an appropriate reading level, encourage readers to read at their own pace, and find out how much fun you can have while reading together! 7 Summer
