Texas A&M-Kingsville Track & Field The Recent Success of Javelina Track & Field Fourth-year head coach Ryan Dall has led the Texas A&M-Kingsville track & field programs back to national prominence in just a short time. The Javelina men have been consistently ranked in the top 25 nationally for the past two years. Both the men’s and women’s programs have been pulling in awards left and right over the past three years. Below is a list of all the Javelinas have accomplished over the past three seasons. Ryan Dall enters his fourth year as the Texas A&M-Kingsville head Track & Field and Cross Country coach. He is quickly building a program that can compete both in the Lone Star Conference and nationally. The Javelina men’s track program is primed for a big year in 2012 while the women’s track and both cross country programs will be much improved. Dall was named the LSC Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year for the second straight season in 2011 after leading the men to a third place finish at the conference championships hosted by Tarleton State. The team was ranked in the top 25 for the entire season and reached a high of #10 on two occasions. At the national meet, the team picked up 13 points to finish in 21st. Jonathan Woodson was a three-time All-America during the season earning one indoors and two outdoors. Dall had six men earned allconference honors and seven earn all-region honors during the outdoor season. Kiya Dandena broke his own records in the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meters while Woodson set the school record in the indoor 200 meters. The women’s program is also improving under Dall, but at a slower pace than the men’s. However, Samantha Alvarez who finished as the national runner-up in the high jump turned in the highlight of the entire 2011 season. Her performance gave the Javelinas a tie for the most points at the national meet by any LSC program. Dall had a pair of studentathletes earned Academic All-District and LSC All- Academic Team honors. After a year to recruit, Dall’s team showed dramatic improvement in 2010 and he was rewarded by being named the LSC Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year. The men’s team was ranked in the top 25 for most of the season and reached #15 heading into the National Championships. They had five athletes earn All-America recognition during the outdoor season and one during the indoor season. The men and women each finished in fourth place at the LSC Championships hosted by Angelo State in 2010. Dall had three individuals win conference titles and five named to the all-conference squad. Two other individuals took LSC All-Academic honors. During the indoor season Dandena set school records in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters while C.J. Griggs set the school record in the triple jump. In Dall’s first year in charge of the program it was a trial by fire. He was not hired until right before the start of the cross country season so he did not have a chance to recruit. Furthermore, he was charged with hosting the Lone Star Conference Championship meets for cross country and track. In his first year at the helm, Dall had a number of athletes set personal records. Distance runner Erica Alvarado set the school record in the indoor 5,000 meters. He had two individuals earn all-conference honors. Dall, a 1999 University of Miami graduate, has extensive experience on the NCAA Division I level serving as an assistant coach at Duke for five years and at Florida International University for four years. Prior to his coaching career, he was the 1995 Big East Conference indoor and outdoor pole vault champion and finished in fourth place in the 1999 Big East decathlon. At Duke, Dall was responsible for the coaching and recruiting of male and female sprinters, hurdlers, pole vaulters and multi-event athletes. He was charged with the set-up of the Asics Duke Invitational Track and Field Meet, a 70-plus school invitational. He coached his athletes to 14 school records, six All-ACC awards, three IC4A champions, 17 All-IC4A awards, one ECAC champion and nine All-ECAC awards. He was the director of the Duke Pole Vault Camp. In his time at FIU, Dall coached and recruited pole vaulters, hurdlers, throwers, high jumpers and multievent athletes. He worked with two All-Americans in the high jump and javelin, an NCAA Championship qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles, four conference champions and over 20 all-conference performers. He also worked with the cross country team. Dall is a member of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the National Pole Vault Coaches Association and the IC4A Coaches Association.
