BIG WEEKEND FOR Javelina athletics.
The football team continued its undefeated season with a one-point squeaker over
long-time rival Texas A&M-Commerce.
The volleyball team upset Midwestern State, 3-1, in Kingsville, handing the
Mustangs their first Lone Star Conference loss. The Javelinas had beaten Cameron in
a conference match Thursday night before 850 fans in the Steinke Center..
And Javelina cross country runner Kiya Dandena won the Incarnate Word
invitational individual championship, beating 73 runners from Division I and Division
II schools.
All is in order in the collegiate sports world.
WHY WOULD ANYONE expect anything but a wild game when the Javelina
and Lion football teams got together last weekend.
It’s been that way since the first game of the series was played in 1930.
Some of the biggest Javelina games, and most disappointing contests, have come
against the Lions.
The Javelinas have had an edge on the Lions in the series since the early 1990s.
The Javelinas have won 14 of the last 17 matchups and last weekend’s Javelina
victory came before the Lions’ homecoming crowd.
It’s difficult not to wonder what lies in store in the 2010 game that will be played
in Javelina Stadium.
THE CHENNAULT CUP is back in circulation.
The Javelinas brought the trophy home on the bus after the victory over Texas
A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon.
The Cup was initiated in 1990 and originally went to the winner of the Lions
game with Livingston (Ala.). But that pairing lasted only two years.
In 1992 the sponsoring Commerce Lions Club International decided to award it
annually to the winner of the Javelina-Lion contest.
The trophy has begun to grow tusks, finding a home in the TAMUK trophy case.
It has been in Kingsville for 14 of the 17 years it has been awarded in the series.
The teams didn’t meet in 2005.
It is named for Lt. Gen. Claire Chennault of Flying Tigers fame.
Chennault was a native of Commerce and the trophy was initiated on what would
have been his 100 th birthday.
NOT ONLY DID Texas A&M-Commerce celebrate homecoming last weekend
but it also inducted six individuals and a team into its athletic Hall of Fame.
One of the inductees was Tem Miller of Kingsville.
Miller was a member of the 1965 Lion golf team that won the NAIA national
championship.
The 1965 squad was inducted last weekend.
JAVELINA FANS HAVE been doing a great job voting for head football coach
Bo Atterberry as coach of the year in the Liberty Mutual poll.
They’ve had the Javelina coach in the lead most of the time since the voting
opened a month ago.
The voting continues until December.
Now Javelinas are being asked to vote for former football players in another
balloting.
The University Interscholastic League is celebrating its centennial and the state
organization is selecting the top Texas athletes who have played football, volleyball,
boys and girls basketball, baseball and track and field during the past 100 years.
Currently, the top athletes are being selected in football and there are four
Javelinas on the ballot.
These are running back Johnny Bailey (Houston Yates), defensive back Darrell
Green (Houston Jones), defensive lineman John Randle (Hearne) and offensive
lineman Gene Upshaw (Robstown).
Go to www.uil100.org/vote.php and click on the “vote now for the football allcentury
team” line.
The deadline for voting is Nov. 7.
Selection of the top basketball, baseball and track and field athletes will come
later in the school year.
RIGO MORALES, WHO played for the Javelina football team in 2004-06, is
with the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League.
The league is in its inaugural season and has teams in California, New York and
Florida as well as Nevada.
Morales’ coach is Jim Fassel, who was the NFL coach of the year in 2000 after
leading the New York Giants to the Super Bowl.
Morales is from Brownsville and played at Pace High School.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE was held for former Javelina quarterback Randy
Johnson last weekend in San Antonio.
Johnson, a first-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons, died three weeks ago in
Brevard, N.C.
Among those in attendance was Mary Steinke, wife of former Javelina football
coach Gil Steinke.
Johnson played his four years at Texas A&I under Steinke.
MIKE ADAMS, THE former Javelina pitcher with the San Diego Padres, had
an outstanding season in the majors.
The Sinton native appeared in 37 games and pitched 37 innings. He had a 0.73
earned run average.
He walked eight and struck out 45.
Another former Javelina, Andrew Sweet, closed the season with the Southern
Illinois Miners with a .247 batting average. He had 10 doubles and two homeruns.
Sweet, a catcher, had a .306 slugging percentage and a .398 batting average
with runners on base.
THE NCAA FINALLY released its first regional football poll last week, midway
through the season.
And even after taking six weeks to get the first regional tabulation put together,
there were questionable aspects of the listing.
In the Super Regional Four poll, the Javelinas were ranked No. 6 despite being
No. 7 in one of the national polls and No. 9 in the other. (Continued on Page 4)
Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western and Washburn (Kan.) were all ranked
above the Javelinas and each had a loss.
But if you think the Regional Four poll is strange, in Super Regional Three, Grand
Valley (Mich.) State, No. 1 in everyone’s national poll, was only second in the region.
Minnesota State-Mankato was ranked No. 1 in Region Three.
LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes:
…..Kelvin Thompson, West Texas A&M running back, has been suspended from
the team for the remainder of the season for violating departmental and university
policy.
A WT spokesperson said Thompson’s status for next season will be evaluated in
the spring.
He was averaging more than 100 yards a game prior to his suspension last week.
In an earlier game with the Javelinas, Thompson rushed for 70 yards and scored
the Buffs’ first touchdown. He caught three passes for 13 yards.
…..Darren Schneider was named the men’s track and field coach at Texas A&M-
Commerce last week.
Schneider has spent the past 10 years as head men’s track and field coach at
Wisconsin-Whitewater.
He was at Wisconsin-Platteville from 1996-99 and before that was on the staffs
at Truman (Mo.) State and Oklahoma State.
NCAA DIVISION II notes:
…..The Great Lakes Valley Conference has imposed a postseason ban on the
Southern Indiana men’s basketball program for 2009-10.
The ban includes the GLVC and NCAA Division II postseason tournaments.
The ban comes after the school self-reported violations that include academic
indiscretions and providing and paying for transportation for student-athletes.
The violations came under a coach who has resigned.
All victories from the 2008-09 season will be “vacated” and funds received from
the NCAA from the institution’s participation in the 2009 Division II regional playoffs
will be returned.
The NCAA still hasn’t ruled on the violations.
Southern Indiana was 27-7 last year and reached the regional playoffs for the
sixth time in eight years.
…..The Nebraska-Kearney women’s soccer team set a Division II attendance
record when 3,227 watched a recent match in Kearney.
This is the first season for soccer at the school.
The previous mark had been 2,004, set by Central Oklahoma and Dallas Baptist in
2007.
The coach at Nebraska-Kearney is Mike Munch, who was coach at Texas A&M-
Commerce when it started its program.
The Antelopes drew crowds of 200-300 for its preseason scrimmages.
…..Maryville (Mo.) will reinstate men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track
and field beginning in 2010-11.
Maryville, which is in the process of reclassifying its program from Division III
to Division II, will be a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference when it
becomes eligible for DII competition.
Track and field was established as a varsity program in 2005-06 but was
suspended in the spring of 2008 due to low participation.
