Javelina Hash
By Fred Nuesch, Coordinator of Athletic External Affairs
THE JAVELINA MEN’S basketball team hosted Sul Ross State
Sunday afternoon in the Steinke Physical Education Center.
Seeing the Lobos on the floor brought back a rush of memories
from the days when the Javelinas and Sul Ross were cohorts in the
Lone Star Conference.
They played as LSC rivals from 1959 until 1975 when Sul Ross
dropped from the conference.
The athletic meetings between the schools go back almost as
far as Javelina history.
The first basketball game between the teams came in 1929-30,
only four years after the start of the Javelina program.
The first football game was played in 1930.
The trips to Sul Ross in all sports were memorable.
Alpine is a unique town in itself. It has a very western
atmosphere and makes for a great locale for a western movie.
It is surrounded by bare hills that have an unusual beauty
despite being stark.
Often when the Javelinas were in Alpine for games in late
October or early November, you would wake up and there would be
a dusting of snow on the hills.
One of the hills had whitewashed rocks spelling out “SR” and
another had an “A” for Alpine High School.
A group of Javelina fans, who will remain nameless, thought it
might be a good idea to take some whitewash, climb the mountain
with the “A” and add an “&I” the night before a game.
Word was that after starting up the hill, it proved a much bigger
chore, both the climbing and the spreading of that much paint, than
they had thought.
The “A” stood alone the next day.
Close by Alpine is Fort Davis National Park and it was a very
interesting place to visit. The federal government has done a great
job restoring the fort and if you are there around sunset, you can
almost sense the presence of the 1800s soldiers on the parade ground.
A few more miles up the road is the McDonald Observatory.
To really enjoy the facility you have to be there at night.
It is supposed to be a perfect spot for observing the skies
because of the lack of lights from cities.
Just south of Alpine is Big Bend National Park. It would take
weeks to visit all of the places there but just to make a short drive is
fascinating.
On the way to Alpine, you go through Langtry and the territory of
Judge Roy Bean, who tagged himself the “Law West of the Pecos”.
Most of the teams and fans would stop off there for a break
and visit the interesting and historical visitors’ center.
Bean built a saloon and named it “The Jersey Lilly” after British
actress Lillie Langtry, no relation to the man for whom the town
was named.
The judge did spread rumors that the town was named for Lilly.
He had an opera house built, hoping it would lure her for a visit.
She did go to Langtry but after Bean’s death.
Much like Southwest Texas in the old days, the Lobos’ stadium
was built next to the railroad tracks and when a train came through,
which was frequent, it almost scraped the back of the press box.
Ray Marshall, 6-7 senior
center from El Paso (Eastwood),
had 11 points.
The Javelina women are 1-2
thus far and dropped a 76-58
decision to UTPB in their last
outing.
Meagan Barlow, 5-7 junior
guard from D’Hanis, is leading the
Javelina scoring with a 15.3 average.
Stevenson, from Freeport
(Brazosport), had 20 points and 19
rebounds in the Javelinas’ two
games at a tournament in Austin.
She was the first league
defensive player of the week for
the new season.
Amanda Haven, 5-8 senior
guard from Corpus Christi
(Calallen), averages 14.0 a game
and Inekka Stevenson, 5-8 junior
guard from Freeport (Brazosport),
is hitting 11.7 a game and leads the
team in rebounding with a 9.7
average.
Texas-Permian Basin was 3-2
entering a Tuesday night game
with Abilene Christian in Odessa.
The Falcons are led in scoring
by Lauren Duger, 5-6 senior guard
from Midland who averages 11.6.
Tammy Acosta, 5-4 senior
guard from El Paso (Americas),
hits 11.4 points a game and
Taniqua Arda, 5-10 junior forward
from Lubbock, averages 10.8.
Teisha King, 5-8 junior
forward from El Paso (Americas), is
the leading rebounder with a 6.8
average.
The public address announcer had to yield to the rails. It was
impossible to hear anything but the train.
Another feature of the trips was the wild animals on the
highway between Eagle Pass and Alpine. They kept you alert.
Seeing a team from Sul Ross made me miss the old days when
the Lobos, Howard Payne, McMurry, Southwest Texas, S.F. Austin,
Sam Houston State, East Texas State, Angelo State and the Javelinas
made up the league.
Those were good times and thank goodness for memories.
SUL ROSS HAS a place in Javelina history.
When the Javelina baseball team made its debut in 1993, Sul
Ross was the first opponent.
The Javelinas swept a three-game series before large crowds at
Dick Kleberg Park.
SPEAKING OF REMINISCING.
Don’t you miss the Turkey Day Shootouts.
These were women’s basketball tournaments held each
Thanksgiving weekend and they attracted some of the top teams in
the country.
It was started in 1997 and the last, and abbreviated one, was in
2009.
Thirty-three different schools from 11 different states took part
in the 13 years of the meet.
Teams came from Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Michigan,
Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South
Dakota and Texas.
Four different schools from Minnesota took part: Concordia-
St. Paul, Minnesota-Crookston, Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota
State-Moorhead.
Family and fans from the northern states enjoyed coming to
South Texas in late November for the sun and warm temperatures.
Some of the schools would bring several hundred fans with them.
Following are the teams that took part in the 13 seasons of the
Shootout:
Dandena, senior from
Houston (Bellaire), received
NCAA Division All-America
honors after finishing 27 th at the
national meet in Spokane, Wash.
That is the best finish ever for
a Javelina athlete at the national
meet, and he becomes only the
second to make All-America in
cross country.
Barlow, 5-7 junior guard from
D’Hanis, had 15 points in the
Javelinas’ only game of the week.
She was six of 10 from the field
and hit two of four three-point shots.
LAST WEEK’S NCAA Division II football poll, selected by the
American Football Coaches Association, was a strange one.
…..Abilene Christian was ranked No. 11 and North Alabama
was ranked No. 12, and in regular-season head-to-head competition,
UNA defeated ACU.
…..Humboldt (Calif.) State was ranked No. 13 nationally but
didn’t get in the national playoffs.
The team won the Great Northwest Conference championship
and in the national poll ranked above all but four of the Super
Regional Four clubs.
…..Delta (Miss.) State was ranked No. 8 nationally but was
selected as the top seed in Super Regional Two.
…..The Lone Star Conference had two teams ranked in the top
11. Midwestern State was No. 2, and should have been No. 1, and
Abilene Christian was ranked No. 11.
Yet ACU was seeded No. 6 in the region.
Only three regional teams were ranked above the Wildcats in the
national poll.
THE ALL-LONE Star Conference football team, selected by the
league coaches, was released last week.
The first-team offensive backs were running backs Jonathan
Woodson of Texas A&M-Kingsville, running back Keidrick Jackson
of Midwestern State, quarterback Brandon Kelsey of Midwestern
and fullback Justin Andrews of Abilene Christian.
Yet quarterback Mitchell Gale of Abilene Christian was selected
as the back of the year.
Gale was on the All-LSC second team.
THE D2FOOTBALL.COM national football poll was much
nicer to the Lone Star Conference than the AFCA listing.
Midwestern State was ranked No. 1 last week, a spot it
deserved.
Abilene Christian was No. 5 and West Texas A&M, which
didn’t make the AFCA top 25, was No. 21.
THE NCAA DIVISION II national championship game will be
televised live on ESPN 2.
The Dec. 17 game is set for 10 a.m. at Braly Municipal Stadium
in Florence, Ala.
I don’t deny being a little biased, but I have found that the
Division II national title games produce some of the best college
football on television each fall.
JAVELINA HEAD FOOTBALL coach Bo Atterberry will be
one of the guest speakers at the 30 th annual Coastal Bend Coaches
Association Clinic Jan. 21-23 at the Holiday Inn-Emerald Beach in
Corpus Christi.
Former Javelina players Mark Smith and David Montalvo will
also be speakers.
Smith is the head football coach at Kerrville Tivy High School
and Montalvo is the track and field coach at Corpus Christi West
Oso High School. (Continued on Page 5)
Another Winning Season for Javelina Football Program
The 2011 Texas A&M-
Kingsville football team has given
the Javelina program its 64 th
winning season.
In the 83 seasons of play, the
Javelinas have had 64 winning
records, have had five .500
campaigns and have had only 14
losing seasons.
That adds up to 69 years of
non-losing football since the first
Javelina team took the field in
1925.
There have been five
undefeated teams, and three of
these came in a row. The 1974
Javelinas were 13-0, the 1975 club
went 12-0 and the 1976 squad was
13-0.
The 1967 Javelinas were 9-0
and the 1962 team was 9-0-1.
Twenty seasons saw the
Javelinas losing once: 1927, 1931,
1934, 1939, 1947, 1959, 1960, 1969,
1970, 1977, 1979 and 1989.
And 18 teams have finished
with two losses: 1925, 1932, 1933,
1941, 1949, 1961, 1964, 1968, 1981,
1986, 1987, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2001,
2003, 2004 and 2010.
The most victories in a season
were compiled by the 1974 and
1976 teams when they rolled over
13 opponents each year.
Other double digit winning
seasons, other than 1974 and 1976,
came in 1959 (12-1), 1968 (10-2),
1969 (11-1), 1970 (11-1), 1975 (12-0),
1979 (12-1), 1988 (10-3), 1989 (10-1),
1994 (12-2), 1995 (11-2), 1998 (11-3),
2002 (10-3), 2003 (11-2) and 2010
(10-2).
and will face Northwest Missouri
State Saturday in Wichita Falls in a
second round contest.
The winners of this weekend’s
second round games will meet for
the Super Regional Four
championship and a berth in the
national semifinals.
The title game is set for Dec.
17 in Florence, Ala.
The 2011 Javelina football team became the 64th squad to post a winning record. In 83 seasons of play, the Javelinas have had 64 winning seasons and
five campaigns that saw the team going .500. There have been only 14 losing seasons since the first team took the field in 1925.
