The Winning Catch
Robert Armstrong, 6-2, 190-pound freshman redshirt
wideout from Cuero, awaits a pass from quarterback Nate
Poppell. He hauled it in and the 62-yard pass-catch with
1:44 left in the game provided the difference as the Javelinas
downed the Rams, 28-21, last weekend in San Angelo.
It will be the 25 th meeting of
THIS WEEKEND’S FOOTBALL game between the Javelinas and West Texas
&M will have a 7:05 p.m. start time, five minutes later than on the schedules.
The game will be televised live to the West Texas area and that brought a need for
he five-minute difference in the kickoff.
THE JAVELINA FANS have turned out in support of their football team in
umbers that are impressive even by NCAA Division I standards.
The 15,550 crowd at the last home game was by far the best at a Lone Star
onference game at that stage of the season.
And this weekend’s game with West Texas A&M and a Nov. 6 matchup with
idwestern State are expected to have comparable figures.
The second largest crowd had been 10,111 at a West Texas A&M game in
anyon.
Midwestern had drawn 8,567 and 8,127 for home games, Central Oklahoma had
,425 for a game in Edmond and Abilene Christian had 8,325 and 7,836 for home
ppearances.
The Javelinas had 8,000 for a home game with Texas A&M-Commerce that was
played in a pouring rain.
A Rice-SMU game two weeks ago drew 14,981 in Houston. And the biggest
home game turnout for Texas State had been 13,742, for S.F. Austin 13,281 and Sam
Houston State 8,030.
North Texas’ largest draw had been 17,015.
SPEAKING OF LARGE crowds.
This weekend’s homecoming matchup with West Texas A&M should attract a
turnout much like the Abilene Christian contest.
The Javelina athletic ticket office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5
p.m. and on Saturday when there is a home game, the office is open from 9 a.m.oon.
The ticket office is located in McCulley Hall on the east side of Javelina Stadium.
The ticket booth at the southeastern entrance to the stadium will open at 2 p.m.
n Saturdays when there are home games.
Stadium gates open at 5:30 p.m.
Long lines formed at the southeastern and west side ticket booths prior to the
CU game.
Fans can prevent standing in the lines by purchasing tickets in advance.
NCAA DIVISION II and CBS College Sports ignored the Lone Star Conference,
nd much of the country outside the east coast, when it set up its television schedule
or men’s and women’s basketball this winter.
AS ALWAYS, THE NCAA is slow in getting its regional rankings compiled.
Entering this week and past the midway point of the fall season, there have been
o football or volleyball regional ratings in NCAA Division II.
There should have been rankings in each after the first three or four games and
atches of the season.
THE GREEN BAY Packer website posted an interview with Al Harris last week
nd although he wouldn’t predict a date he would be able to return to the team’s
ineup, he did sound optimistic and upbeat.
Harris, who was a defensive back with the Javelina football team in 1995 and
996, has been sidelined since last November with a leg injury.
He is one of the top defensive backs in the NFL.
Harris said he “feels good…awesome” but would leave it up to the Packer
raining staff to determine when he is ready to return to the field.
FORMER JAVELINA HEAD baseball coach Russell Stockton has been named
an assistant baseball coach at Houston Baptist. (Continued on Page 4)
AN ABILENE CHRISTIAN fan posted some nice comments on the Javelina
home football experience after attending the recent game between the Javelinas and
Wildcats in Javelina Stadium.
The fan called the tailgate experience “awesome” and said it “rivals a lot of D1
schools…the Javelinas should be proud.”
“The way that A&M-Kingsville gets so many people involved is the key to their
having such a great gameday experience,” the fan continued. “The train is such a
great tool for that. They had eating contests in the end zones shown on the screen,
kiss cams, the military, Whataburger…a group from the band came over to the
stands and played to the crowd. The big loud chopper leading them on the field. It is
a production.
“The band is by far the best I’ve heard at any D2 game. The horns are
powerful. …”
Javelina Athletics Sign
Agreement With Hooks
The Texas A&M-Kingsville athletic
department and the Corpus Christi Hooks
have signed a corporate sponsorship
agreement that will give the Javelina
baseball team a game at Whataburger Field
in the spring.
The groups signed a three-year
agreement.
“We are excited about the partnership
with Javelina athletics,” Ken Schrom, Hooks
president, said. “I’ve personally
experienced game-day on the A&M-
Kingsville campus and it’s a fun-filled,
electric environment.
“The program has a tradition most
schools would envy and as South Texas’
only college football team, the Javelinas
deserve our support. Though they deserve
it, believe me, they are out to earn it!”
“We are very excited to add the Corpus
Christi Hooks to our group of corporate
sponsors,” Ken Oliver, Javelina director of
athletics, said. “It is a great honor to be
affiliated with a professional organization
that is the quality of the Hooks. It should
be a mutually beneficial relationship for both
organizations.”
The Javelinas have had a close
relationship with the Hooks since the latter
organization began its operations in Corpus
Christi.
The baseball team has played games at
the Hooks’ home field most seasons and the
Javelina Alumni Association and other
Texas A&M-Kingsville groups have had
special nights at the ball park.
The Javelina athletic department has
also been supportive of the Hooks’ South
Texas Winter Baseball Banquet each
January.
Locker Sponsorship
Name plates for lockers in the Javelina football dressing room are still
available to honor past coaches, players or fans. Roberto and Ashley Garza
are the sponsors of the locker shown in this photo. Information on locker
sponsorship is available at (361) 593-2493 or at ruben.cantu@tamuk.edu.
