Message
Warm welcome to all guests, participants and visitors to this 2nd Collaborative
International Nursing Conference of the Philippine Nurses
Association of America Foundation and the Central Philippine Adventist
College School of Nursing.
This is a laudable undertaking as it promotes quality
healthcare through the sharing of experiences in the field and from
knowledge acquired from illustrious reference speakers. Aside from the
camaraderie fostered among practitioners, this conference will renew the
seal and individual commitments of nurses to pursue their sworn duty as
healthcare providers.
May you emerge enriched and energized from this conference for
your personal advantage and that of those under your care.
Greetings.
Message
It is an honor and a great privilege to host the second Philippine Nurses Association of
America Foundation (PNAAF) Collaborative Conference here in Bacolod City.
My profound gratitude and appreciation to the PNAAF officers led by their President Ernie
Rosas and Conference Chair Araceli Antonio for their genuine commitment and concern to
come up with an organized program of sharing their expertise to their colleagues here in the
Philippines. Likewise, I like to recognize the collaborative efforts of Director Lily Ann
Baldago of Professional Regulation Commission, Region V1, who initiated the preparation
for this event, the Philippine Nurses Association, Negros Occidental Chapter and the
Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing, Region V1.
I like to congratulate and thank the working committees in their individual capacities;
Mr. Teody Ray Llasos of PNAAF, Dr. Chris Sorongon of RGO, Dean Helen Correa, Dean
Jocelyn Cadena, and Dean Maricor Famillaran and others who contributed their invaluable
time and efforts to make this event a significant one for health care providers.
The theme for this conference is what we need to consider since quality care and competent
workers are emphasized worldwide." Promoting Health Care Quality through Leadership
and Global Linkages: Building Capacity for Evidence- Based Practice" is the conceptual
framework of the sessions. This is a global call for improvement of health care quality
through leadership and professional development in building our capacity to conduct
researches as evidence of our nursing practice. As nurses, the pursuit of quality must be
integrated in our system and relentlessly incorporated in what we say, think and do.
I am confident that our learning during the two days' conference will ripple to our health
care providers in our health care institutions. Together let us make a difference in the lives of
our fellow nurses, and of our clients toward quality and satisfying life.
It is my pleasure to cordially welcome all nurses coming from USA, and nurses from our
government and private health care institutions as well as other health care providers.
Continuing Care Retirement Community: A Housing Alternative for Older Adults
Email and phone of primary author: aracelidantonio@aol.com 650-878-0622
ABSTRACT
Housing strategies must be explored for an expanding baby boomer population - as part of the advanced
care planning for Older Adults. The Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) is a housing
alternative for the Older Adults. CCRC is part independent living, part assisted living and part skilled

needs. Healthy adults can reside independently in single-family homes, apartments or condominiums.
These communities give older adults the option to live in one location for the duration of their life, with
much of their future care already planned. This provides a great level of comfort to both residents and
their families as the stress of the care giving relationship is greatly relieved. (1)
The author provides in depth information on
Levels of care, services, care providers, and clientele of continuing care retirement communities will be
described. The author will discuss the impact of regulations on quality of care and client outcomes, as
well as the rationale for the recommended standards of CCRC Best Practices on Disclosure and
Transparency (1).
In California, CCRCs offer a long-term continuing care contract that provides for housing, residential
services, and nursing care, usually in one location, and usually for a resident's lifetime. The California
Department of Social Services is responsible for the oversight of continuing care providers. The
Department's Community Care Licensing Division has two branches that participate in the regulation. The
Senior Care Program monitors continuing care providers for compliance with the Community Care
licensing laws and regulations regarding buildings and grounds, accommodations, care and supervision of
residents, and quality of service. The Continuing Care Contracts Branch is responsible for reviewing and
approving applications to operate a CCRC and monitors the ongoing financial condition of all CCRC
providers and their ability to fulfill the long-term contractual obligations. (2)
Title of presentation: Behavior Management of Patient with Alzheimers Dementia
Email and phone of primary author: cherinacns@gmail.com- 650.438.9326
ABSTRACT
Dementia is a progressivee disabling disease that resulted in impaired memory, judgment and
reasoning. Dementia is an umbrella term for a collection of symptoms that can be caused by a
number of disorders that affect the brain. It causes damages to brain which causes a steady loss
of memory, thinking and behavior. It is not part of aging and symptoms develop slowly and gets
worse over time. (1)
As the dementia progresses symptoms of the diseases varies. One in eight older Americans has

unpaid caregivers which causes caregiver burnout.
The author provides information on the different stages of dementia, triggers, and management
through evidence-based literature. The author will share real stories and actual experience in
dealing with the complex behaviors in the actual unit setting. The authors will state the nonpharmacological
and pharmacological interventions in the care of the individual with dementia.
Alzheimers organization goals are
the latest research in the care of the dementia. Research continues and dementia remains a puzzle
that treatment for this progressive disease remains incurable (2).
A Case Study of the Implementation of Electronic Health Record in the Pre-Admission Testing
and Same Day Surgery Units in Central New Jersey
Rosario P. Estrada, DNP, RN, BC, CPN
Abstract
The purpose of this project was to construct a case study research on the implementation of an
electronic health record (EHR) on the Pre-Admission Units and Day Surgery Centers in an acute
care hospital in Central New Jersey. Rogers's Innovation-Diffusion Theory was used to guide
the study of this technological innovation in the Pre-Admission Testing Unit and Day Surgery
Center. Case study research permitted an in-depth investigation of the impact of diffusion of
EHRS as a technological innovation and bounded phenomenon that was undertaken in real life
situations. The use of multiple methods was considered to be a key activity promoting rigor in
the case study method and constitutes methodological triangulation. For this case study, survey
questionnaires, interview, time and motion study, and documentary data comprised the data
sources for secondary analysis. Data were reduced to conceptual groups so that conclusions
could be derived and a case description developed. The intended outcome of this project was to
gain insight into the ways in which technological advances are diffused across nursing units.
There were no statistically significant findings on the paired samples T-test comparing
pre and post mean scores on the attitude scale (t=1.938, p =.094 (sig. 2-tailed). Comparing the
pre-implementation and post-implementation mean scores revealed that nurses had more
negative attitudes post-computerization as evidenced by a decreased mean attitude score from
2.53 to 1.78.
An interview provided more in-depth analysis to understand the phenomenon –
diffusion and use of EHR and its impact on nursing practice and patient care from the
perspective of working nurses. Overall, the nurses preferred the EHR to paper record but wanted
it to better support their nursing practice. Nurses stated that there is no current policy and
procedure for the EHR but training guidelines were being used for training. The time and motion
study findings revealed variables and inefficient time practices that could be reduced/eliminated
to improve nursing workflow and generate cost savings. Results of the completeness of the
documentation review indicated that the EHR (N=20) provided a 100% compliance compared to
11% paper chart record (N=16) with the elements selected for review.
Results of this case study will be valuable to streamline EHRs and improve/redesign
nursing workflow as well as to develop more organized plan and effective implementation
strategies in the diffusion of the EHR hospital wide.

Email and phone of primary author: evelyn.andamo@gmail.com
ABSTRACT
Behavioral Objectives: At the end of the session attendees will be able to
1. Identify three goals of an Adult Day Healthcare Center (ADHC)
2. Discuss the roles of the core services of an ADHC
3. Differentiate between a restorative therapy and a maintenance program.
4. State five mandated requirements to meet licensure for an ADHC
The Center shall provide core services: nursing, social work, maintenance program, and activity
Program. Specialized services are required: Restorative therapy (i.e. physical therapy.
Occupational therapy and speech pathology services), Dietary, and psychiatry/psychology
services. Other services stipulated by state regulations are food services and transportation to
and from the center.
Mandates for both core and specialized services are: Initial evaluations and evidence-based
treatments, reassessments every six months, quarterly progress reports, and documentation every
treatment visit.
Finally, the interdisciplinary team comprised of a nurse, social worker, dietitian, therapists, and

. Patients who were given their
six month reassessment and those provided with initial evaluations are discussed . An
individualized patient care plan (IPC) is established for each patient discussed during this
interdisciplinary team meeting.
Each member representing the interdisciplinary treatment team implements the treatment for
each patient per established IPC.
ABSTRACT
Presenter(s) Last and First Name (print): Solarte, Remedios Alvarez
Title of the study/presentation: Management of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An
Evidence-based Update
Email and phone of presenter: rasolarte@gmail.com
ABSTRACT:
Objectives:
*Discuss the planning, implementation and outcomes of the PNAM 2010 capacity building project,
and the outcomes learned.
*Discuss the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) in the diagnosis and management of patients with
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
*Develop a capacity-building project for adoption and implementation of evidence-based practices
in the care of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Methods: Questionnaires and Focus Groups
Results: Descriptive analysis was used to determine the differences or significance of the responses.
The data was used to address social determinants of health disparities.
Conclusions and Implications:
This presentation focuses on clinical management of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM)
based on review of literature and the latest evidence-based guidelines. The guidelines suggest using a
team of specialists for patient-centered care.
According to the National Guideline Clearing House website, the clinical practice guidelines (CPGs)
for diagnosis and management of type 2 DM were developed by several international organizations.
In regards to Pharmacotherapy, there was agreement on the key principles for the development of the
CPGs, except for the disclosure of conflicts of interest (COIs). As a result of the controversy over the
COIs, the policy for Guideline Committees was changed in 2010 so that at least 50% of writing
committee members, plus the chair may have no relationship with industry (RWI). The CPGs for
drug therapy are primarily founded on expert consensus rather than on evidence-base grading of the
literature.
Two important lifestyle changes in the clinical management of T2DM are medical nutritional therapy
(MNT) and physical activity. Carbohydrate counting of food has been found effective in the
glycemic control of patients with Type 2 DM on insulin therapy.
About the Presenter: Remedios A. Solarte, MSN, RN, NP, is a Professor Emeritus of Nursing at
Oakland Community College, Waterford, Michigan, where she was on the faculty for 32 years. She
obtained her nursing diploma and BSN from Far Eastern University, Philippines, and MSN from
Wayne State University. In 2010, she was the Project Director of the PNA Michigan Phase I
Capacity Building Project, funded by the Michigan Department of Community Health, Health
Disparities Reduction Minority Health (MDCH-HDRMH). This project addressed social
determinants of health disparities among Filipinos. Her other career highlights include: caring for
patients as a part time clinical nurse specialist for eight years in the Diabetic Clinic, St. Joseph Mercy
Hospital, Michigan; President of the PNAA from 1990-1992; and Member, Michigan Board of
Nursing for 4 years, for which she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by Governor James
Blanchard and honored with a Resolution from the Department of Commerce for unselfish service to
the people of Michigan.
