Q: Tell us how the Michael Jackson
song “Man in the Mirror” originated.
A: “In every way there was just an
angel on our shoulder with this song...
and the work of a great producer,
Quincy Jones. Michael loved the kind
of gospel influence of [the song]. One
of the things that was fun and really
great about Michael was his musicality...
[for example] on the key phrase,
“If you wanna make the world a better
place, you better look at yourself
and make a change,” it’s a really unusual
cluster. It’s like a car horn — C,
D, F, G — and I had it laid out like that
on the demo and Michael just nailed it.
This is a very complicated chord and
there was just no problem… and that
was just his genius musicality with it.”
UMPG SIGNS J. COLE
UMPG has signed a worldwide
“A Star is Born” and toured in support
of the album. J. Cole was recently
featured in XXL’s annual
“Freshman Ten.”
KERI HILSON
Q: Tell us about “The Way I Are.”
A: When you’re working with Timbaland,
he kind of “scats” the
melody...he was doing, “I ain’t got no
money,” and that became the blueprint.
As he was saying that, I was
thinking “Wow, you have a concept
about being broke and about dating
someone not for their exterior.” I’ve
always had this concept about “taking
your chain off” — you don’t have
to flaunt for me. That’s when I’ll see
the real you...All that is icing...it’s
great, but it’s icing. It was something
I had to say. It was a really conquering
moment to have that song take
off around the world.
GLEE
GUEST COLUMNIST: Brian Lambert,
SVP Film & TV Music
Every decade, television
launches a series which
boldly embraces music as
one of its characters. Fox hit
the jackpot this year with the Golden
Globe award-winning musical comedy
“Glee.” While nobody had a crystal ball,
Fox TV music executive, Geoff Bywater,
had the vision and passion to reach out
early and I was fortunate to work closely
with Geoff and Ward at Fox along with
music supervisor PJ Bloom. As a result,
UMPG ended up with 26 songs in the
first 13 episodes of Season 1. We also
had 7 songs on Volume 1 of the Glee
soundtrack and 4 songs on the follow up
Volume 2 (which have cumulatively sold
over 1.3 million units to date). We’re already
off to a great start on the back nine
episodes of Season 1 which begin airing
on April 13th following “American Idol.”
This kind of show, and “Glee” in particular,
has been great for the music
publishing world because it serves as a
great outlet for catalog songs regardless
of who originally recorded them. For
example, when the Glee cast covered
“Lean On Me” (Withers) in Episode 10,
the song hit Top 100 on the UK charts
38 years after its original release.
with Teatro Ponchielli in Cremona
recently commissioned Giorgio
Battistelli and Luca Francesconi to
write two new pieces, requesting
them to draw inspiration from the
works of Claudio Monteverdi.
Giorgio Battistelli found a source
of inspiration in Book VIII of the
borrows the title: Inventis facile est
BRENTWOOD-BENSON ACQUIRES EMACK
EMACK is the publishing arm of Christian label Gotee
Records. The EMACK catalog includes Relient K, Luna Halo,
Grits, Jennifer Knapp, and more. The deal includes acquisition
of both the song catalog and current artist/writer deals
such as Ayiesha Woods, Sarah Kelly, and B Reith. The
companies will jointly publish future acts signed to the label.
quartets took place between 1990
and 1997, that of Quatuor V in
2005. The unusual Quatuor VII
“Hinterland” for string quartet and
orchestra, on the other hand, defined
by the composer as a hapax,
premiered at the Konzertsaal in
Luzern on 18th April. UMPG
Teatro Dal Verme in Milan and at
the Ponchielli in Cremona. “The exercise
of looking back to the past,
which might seem straightforward,
is in fact today very problematic. I
wanted to avoid the neo-classical
approach,” explains Battistelli. Luca
Francesconi has drawn inspiration
from the libretto of Monteverdi’s
Orpheus. “I compiled a brief text
drawing from Alessandro Striggio’s
work the topical moments in the evolution
of the mood.”
The UPPM Difference
Universal Publishing Production
Music (better known as UPPM)
has just completed another
record year. In spite of the difficult
economy, UPPM,
the world’s leading
production music
company managed
to exceed its goals
for both revenue
and bottom line.
How could this
happen in such a
trying time? Well it
goes back to what
makes UPPM different
from the rest
of our “core” business
in Publishing—UPPM
owns
both the “master”
and the underlying composition (“publishing”)
as well. So in essence this
means that UPPM is like a record company
and a music publisher rolled in to
one. This allows for easier, one-stop
shopping for clients and because the
works are not popular songs, they are
a license would be on the Core side or
if they were custom scored. Having this
more affordable option for our UMPG
DARKFLY MULTIPLIES WITH
FOUR NEW RELEASES
DarkFly, FirstCom Music’s premier
promo library, is designed for editors
and producers who crave creative control. Each track is
loaded with cutting points, loops, and accents. Check
out DarkFly and give your productions a dynamic edge
to captivate your audience and keep them focused on
your message. Visit FirstCom.com to audition now.
clients is especially attractivein these trying
economic times.
Universal has continued its support
for UPPM in 2009 by investing in
the acquisition of one of Europe’s
largest and most well regarded library
companies, KAPAGAMA.
Through this acquisition, UPPM has
strengthened its position in France,
Germany and through-out Europe
as well as in the US where its libraries
are also distributed.
To build on this
market leadership,
UMPG also agreed
to invest in a
total revamping of
the UPPM website
which is the key tool
that UPPM clients
use when searching
for and licensing production
music. The
result of this new
tool was unveiled
at the UPPM Worldwide
Conference
which was held in
London in early March. As technological
tools are a key differentiator in
this market, the new websites will help
UPPM springboard to the forefront
with technology leadership and help
UPPM further its lead in this competitive
market. UMPG
in both regular programming, interstitial uses and
