GLEE GUEST COLUMNIST: Brian Lambert, SVP Film & TV <strong>Music</strong> Every decade, television launches a series which boldly embraces music as one of its characters. Fox hit the jackpot this year with the Golden Globe award-winning musical comedy “Glee.” While nobody had a crystal ball, Fox TV music executive, Geoff Bywater, had the vision and passion to reach out early and I was fortunate to work closely with Geoff and Ward at Fox along with music supervisor PJ Bloom. As a result, UMPG ended up with 26 songs in the first 13 episodes of Season 1. We also had 7 songs on Volume 1 of the Glee soundtrack and 4 songs on the follow up Volume 2 (which have cumulatively sold over 1.3 million units to date). We’re already off to a great start on the back nine episodes of Season 1 which begin airing on April 13th following “American Idol.” This kind of show, and “Glee” in particular, has been great for the music publishing world because it serves as a great outlet for catalog songs regardless of who originally recorded them. For example, when the Glee cast covered “Lean On Me” (Withers) in Episode 10, the song hit Top 100 on the UK charts 38 years after its original release.
