SMT Wertheim Conquers the Spanish Market with Comprehensive Thermal Solutions
Narrative:
Ever increasing processes in complexity paired with
ever higher expectations of customers in the
automotive industry force its suppliers to face such
decisive question:
Who is qualified enough to be a sub-supplier of
advanced production equipment, not only reliable
with perfect technical and after-sales support, but
also competent and able to master process
technology at the highest level without neglecting
individual requirements by its customers?
This question was recently posed by company
Nagares S.A. a well-respected Spanish supplier to the
automotive industry. This company had the
demanding requirement to produce highly reliable,
almost voids-free solder joints, emphasizing also
energy and process efficiencies, all in an in-line
process.
Company Nagares S.A., the automotive supplier
found a competent source with SMT, Wertheim.
Detailed process discussions in combination with
substantial, thorough testing in our Technology
Center resulted in the decision for a SMT QP Reflow
Vacuum System S -Dual Lane-. A decision derived at
by our customer after thorough evaluation and
similar tests with our competition.
Following X-rays demonstrate clearly the significant
reduction of voids by using a SMT QP Reflow Vacuum
System S for this in-line reflow soldering process.

In the process of detailed project meetings at our
customer’s location other processes in the assembly
area surfaced and were presented, among them a curing
process for assembled products. In this case the
assembled product is covered with pottant which has to
be cured for a longer period of time at approx. 120° C,
also in an in-line process.
The calculation of the required machine size based on
relevant process data had a sobering result:
A 20 m long curing oven at a width of 1.5 m with
following robot controlled discharge. This added up to a
floor space requirement of 30 m² without robot cell.

Our product group HTT is specialized in custom-made
equipment designed for the hot-function test, curing
and gluing and was challenged to come up with an
acceptable solution. SMT met the challenge by
suggesting a 4-track oven, reducing floor space to only
6 m and lowering the floor space requirement for the
entire curing line to 9 m² only. Differently expressed,
cost-of-ownership in regard to floor space was reduced
by a significant 70%. No doubt, our customer was
convinced of our proposed solution.
Continuation of the Narrative:
Outstanding solutions are willingly shared and
communicated to others. Based on the preferential
reference for the SMT Quattro Peak Reflow Vacuum
System, another well-reputed automotive supplier in
Spain decided to send us products with comparable
demands regarding voids and reliability for vacuum
testing to our Technology Center in Wertheim.
Following demonstrate again the excellent performance
of the SMT Vacuum Module.
Based on further intensive technical discussions and the
excellent vacuum tests also this customer decided to
use a SMT quality product.
We are pleased that our customers repeatedly
recognized and rewarded our technical competence
and impressive ability to innovate.
