Artist and illustrator Johanna Basford has selected these films to accompany her exhibition Wonderlands,
which runs in DCA galleries from Sat 4 May – Sun 7 July. The exhibition is open daily: pop in and discover
her intricate, inky world.
Labyrinth
Sun 12 May, 20:00
A true ‘80s gem, this Alice in
Wonderland-inspired coming-of-age
adventure whisks average teenager
Sarah into a world of strange
creatures, illusion, danger and
musical numbers. The Goblin King,
played perfectly by David Bowie,
steals Sarah’s baby brother, and she
must find her way through the
trap-filled labyrinth to save him.
Wittily scripted by Terry Jones from
the Monty Python team, there are
classic scenes at every turn for both
adults and children, from the danger
of the Bog of Eternal Stench to
Bowie’s creepy performance in the
M.C. Escher-inspired castle.
Alice in
Wonderland (2D)
Sat 18 May, 15:00
Running away from her engagement
party, Alice tumbles into a magical
rabbit hole. She lands in an
underground room where the only
exit is a tiny door, far too small for
her. Discovering a magic shrinking
potion, she escapes only to find
herself in a strange new land. She
meets a White Rabbit, the grinning
Cheshire Cat, a Dodo and brothers
Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Alice
is soon called upon to rescue her
friends from the evil Red Queen and
battle the infamous Jabberwocky.
She will have to be clever and brave
to outwit them, but maybe a little
magic cake will help…
The Illusionist
Sat 1 June, 15:00
This animated film by Sylvain
Chomet was based on a neverrealised
script by Jacques Tati. Set
in the early fifties, The Illusionist tells
the story of an ageing magician
touring Scotland with his magic
show who meets and befriends a
runaway teenage girl. Although he
struggles to earn a living, the pair
find a strange kind of happiness
together.
As much as the film is a tribute to
Tati, it is also a love poem to the city
of Edinburgh. Chomet has turned
Scotland into a dreamland, bathed in
a radiant, beautiful light. Dundonians
should be especially proud as a lot
of the technical work on the film was
done in Dundee, by local animators
working for ink.digital. Anyone
involved in the production should be
applauded – it is a beautiful gem.
