<strong>Leaflet</strong> <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> <strong>adult</strong> <strong>outpatients</strong> <strong>with</strong> <strong>possible</strong> <strong>or</strong> <strong>proven</strong> <strong>Influenza</strong> <strong>H1N1</strong><br />

infection<br />

Please follow these instructions:<br />

1. Stay at home until all symptoms including fever and cough have resolved<br />

(fever) <strong>or</strong> have clearly diminished <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> at least one day.<br />

2. Avoid all unnecessary visits to your household.<br />

3. Avoid contact to people at high risk <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> complications of an influenza infection (e.g.<br />

people <strong>with</strong> chronic disease, immunosuppression, pregnant women, babies and the<br />

elderly above 65 years).<br />

4. In<strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong>m people you have had close contact <strong>with</strong> (household members, people you<br />

have nursed, embraced, kissed <strong>or</strong> <strong>with</strong> whom you have shared cutlery <strong>with</strong>) in the<br />

period of one day precending the onset of symptoms until diagnosis.<br />

The following hygiene precautions help avoid transmission of influenza to other people:<br />

• Avoid shaking hands, coughing <strong>or</strong> sneezing at people.<br />

• Cover your nose and mouth <strong>with</strong> a paper tissue when you cough <strong>or</strong> sneeze.<br />

• Wash your hand soften <strong>with</strong> water and soap.<br />

• Sleep in separate rooms.<br />

• During daytime, try to stay in a separate room<br />

• Keep other people at a distance of at least one meter.<br />

• Air your home often, especially the rooms shared <strong>with</strong> other household members.<br />

• Adhere to your prescribed drugs.<br />

• Contact your treating physician if you soffer from side effects of drugs.<br />

• Arrange follow up dates <strong>with</strong> your physician by phone.<br />

• Weare a mask when leaving your home <strong>or</strong> when entering a hospital.<br />

• Contact your physician when signs of influenza occur.<br />

• If <strong>possible</strong> do not use public transp<strong>or</strong>t when seeing your physician.<br />

Precautions <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> contacts of <strong>adult</strong>s patients <strong>with</strong> <strong>possible</strong> <strong>or</strong> <strong>proven</strong><br />

<strong>Influenza</strong> <strong>H1N1</strong><br />

Close contacts are defined as household members <strong>or</strong> people whom you have nursed,<br />

embraced, kissed <strong>or</strong> shared cutlery <strong>with</strong> in the period of one day precending the onset of<br />

symptoms until seven days after the onset of symptoms.<br />

Adhere to the following precautions:<br />

• By observing hygiene precautions you can avoid transmitting the infection to other<br />

people.<br />

Hygiene precautions against influenza:<br />

1. Wash your hands often <strong>with</strong> water and soap.<br />

2. Avoid close contact to sick people <strong>or</strong> their respirat<strong>or</strong>y secretions.<br />

3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose <strong>or</strong> mounth.<br />

4. Do not shake hands and keep a distance of at least one meter to other people.<br />

5. Refrain from embracing <strong>or</strong> kissing. Do net share cutlery.<br />

Monit<strong>or</strong> your health in the 7 days following contact <strong>with</strong> a person suffering from <strong>possible</strong> <strong>or</strong><br />

<strong>proven</strong> influenza. Take your temperature at least daily <strong>or</strong> when you feel feverish. Look <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong><br />

signs of influenza such as:<br />

• Acute fever above 38°<br />

• Malaise <strong>or</strong> fatigue<br />

• Muscle pain <strong>or</strong> diffuse body aches<br />

• Running of stuffed nose, cough <strong>or</strong> s<strong>or</strong>e throat<br />
