cut off point for maternal deaths, are counted in Chapter 14 as Late deaths. All but three of these later
deaths were considered to be directly due to a postnatal mental illness and are counted as Late Indirect,
the three others occurring in women with long standing mental health problems and were not considered
related to pregnancy.
Substance abuse
An overdose of drugs of abuse was responsible for the deaths of twenty-two women, three of which
occurring during pregnancy and three shortly after birth. These six cases are counted in this Chapter as
Indirect maternal deaths as the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy and death meant the assessors
could not rule out an intentional overdose. The others deaths were most probably accidental and occurred
later after childbirth. These deaths are counted in Chapter 14, as Late Coincidental deaths.
Deaths from suicide and accidental drug overdose are considered to be psychiatric deaths and are described
in this Chapter. However, they are counted either in this Chapter, or Chapter 14 depending on the timing of
the mothers’ death in relation to childbirth. The fi gures for this triennium are given in Table 12.1.
