Inhalt und Qualifikationsziel The course provides an overview <strong>and</strong> framework for considering the<br />
evolving field of international conflict resolution. This module examines<br />
how conflict research has evolved within the field of political science. It<br />
will initially investigate different levels of conflict <strong>and</strong> violence from the<br />
intrapersonal to the communal <strong>and</strong>, finally, to the state <strong>and</strong> international<br />
level. Then, the module will examine competing theories on conflict <strong>and</strong><br />
violence. The theoretical reflections will focus on different aspects of<br />
conflict, ranging from inter-state to intra-state conflict. In each instance,<br />
various <strong>and</strong> contested concepts are discussed <strong>and</strong> analysed through an<br />
examination of social <strong>and</strong> political theory. Specific case studies <strong>and</strong> new<br />
security concerns will be reviewed.<br />
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:<br />
SLO1: Underst<strong>and</strong> key historical <strong>and</strong> theoretical issues in international<br />
conflict <strong>and</strong> the study of war <strong>and</strong> peace.<br />
SLO2: Underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> explain conflict, including conflict at the international<br />
<strong>and</strong> intra-state levels.<br />
SLO3: Ability to critically identify key debates in the discipline.<br />
SLO4: Underst<strong>and</strong> key concepts in <strong>Conflict</strong> <strong>Studies</strong>.<br />
SLO5: Familiar with applied methodological <strong>and</strong> epistemological methods<br />
in the field.<br />
SLO6: Critically analyse historical <strong>and</strong> current cases of both intra-state<br />
<strong>and</strong> inter-state conflict.<br />
These specific learning outcomes contribute to achieving the learning<br />
outcomes of our postgraduate programmes by demonstrating knowledge<br />
of the following:<br />
- demonstrate specialised knowledge of, <strong>and</strong> critical insight into, the<br />
key historical <strong>and</strong> theoretical issues in their programme area, together<br />
with familiarity with appropriate bibliographical sources.<br />
- apply theoretical <strong>and</strong> conceptual frameworks to the analysis of intrastate<br />
<strong>and</strong> interstate conflict use a variety of research methods <strong>and</strong><br />
evaluate critically their application in the scholarly literature conduct<br />
research in politics <strong>and</strong> international relations demonstrating<br />
awareness of epistemological, methodological <strong>and</strong> ethical principles.<br />
