Our Hearts are as One for the Chain Continues
E
ffective July 1st, 2014, Rabbi Micah
Peltz will become the Senior Rabbi of TBS.
He will be the third senior rabbi in our history,
succeeding Rabbi Albert Lewis z’’l, and
Rabbi Steven Lindemann. How blessed we
are to have had such wonderful rabbis lead
our congregation, and to have found such
a worthy successor! Rabbi Peltz began earning
our admiration and respect from the
first time he visited TBS in March of 2007.
Like Rabbis Lewis and Lindemann before
him, he brings inspirational spiritual leadership,
compassion and caring, serious scholarship,
engaging teaching, and much good
humor to our TBS family.
How it is that TBS has been so fortunate?
How have we been able to attract and keep
such outstanding rabbis? I do not believe
there is much mystery in that: just look
around during any TBS Shabbat morning
service, adult education program, social
event or other occasion when we gather as
a community. Our TBS family is comprised
of members who care deeply about Jewish
traditions, continuity, and living a life
infused with Jewish values and mitzvot. We
care about our community, about the
From the Executive Director
A Memorable Year
It’s been quite a year at Temple Beth
Sholom and we still have Passover, the
Tribute Dinner, Shavuot & Confirmation
and even more still ahead.
In August we welcomed Alex Weinberg
as our Director of Congregational Learning
and watched as he made significant strides
in energizing, modernizing and “enjoyifying”
our schools and our Youth and Family
Services.
After the excitement of the High Holy
Days and Sukkot subsided, we went right
into one of the most enjoyable and successful
events we’ve ever held at TBS –
the “Taste of Broadway” program on
October 30. Over 700 people were
thrilled by the fabulous music and singing
voices that night. Mark your calendars
now for October 21, 2012 as, by popular
demand, we are planning a second
appearance of this fabulous company of
Jewish community
at large, and
about Israel. We
are proud of our
synagogue and its history, and although we
may not always agree about specific decisions
that are made (we are Jewish, after
all!), in the end we are committed to TBS as
the center of our Jewish lives. Given the
opportunity to visit with us and learn what
we are about, what young rabbinical student
wouldn’t want to become a leader of
our vibrant community?
On a Shabbat weekend in March, 2007,
at the invitation of our search committee,
soon-to-be Rabbi Micah Peltz, and his wife
Rachel Zivic, came to visit TBS. Coming
from the Midwest, I am not sure that either
of them knew much about Cherry Hill, and
I do not think that either of them seriously
thought that TBS, and Cherry Hill, would
be their new home. But spending a very
busy Shabbat and weekend with our congregants,
visiting our schools, meeting our
professional staff and getting to know
artists. I’m proposing
a little
contest for you –
should we call it
“Taste of Broadway
II”, “Return of the Taste of
Broadway” or something else. Please
send me your suggestions.
In January, we had another terrific
event, the “Night at the Museum” program
at the National Museum of American Jewish
History featuring our clergy each explaining
some of the exhibits. Look for more of this
kind of educational programming moving
forward.
On April 22, we will renew an old TBS
tradition – the Tribute Dinner – as we honor
Edward Adleman, Sandy and Jeff
Brown, and Rabbi Micah Peltz for their
contributions and hard work for Temple
