Rabbi’sMessage
Scheduling Conflicts
Balancing busy schedules is always
a challenge. For my family, figuring
out when to schedule a doctor’s appointment
or find some quality time together can
seem as complicated as the Middle East
Peace Process! (Ok, it’s not that complicated.)
Between my work and Rachel’s work,
plus Yael’s and Ari’s activities, the days fillup
pretty quickly. And, I know, as the kids
get older it only gets worse.
Scheduling conflicts are inevitable for any
family – and this year it is for our Jewish
community as well. We all know that, at
times, tests or sports can conflict with
Shabbat and holidays. But this year we have
a difficult kind of scheduling conflict.
Somehow, the rabbis of old never saw this
one coming. Shavuot this year begins on
Saturday night, May 26 and runs through
Monday, May 28. Yes, those dates do sound
familiar. It is Memorial Day Weekend.
I know there is nothing we can do about
it and no, it is not the end of the world, but
it is unfortunate. I’ve lived in South Jersey
long enough to know that Memorial Day
Weekend kicks off the season “down the
shore”. And, even if you don’t plan on
spending your time at the beach, it is a nice
opportunity for families to get away. But,
before you make yours plans, just read a little
more.
Shavuot is not the most popular of our
holidays. There is no Seder or Sukka – just a
tradition of eating dairy food and studying
Torah late into the night. Though I’d trade a
blintz for a brisket any day, I do think the
lessons of Shavuot make it a uniquely
important holiday for us to celebrate.
We are deluged with information today.
As I write this, my phone is beeping with
new text messages and Facebook updates.
So much of how we consume this information
is superficial – we skim through hundreds
of emails a day and our replies would
probably not have been acceptable to our
high school English teachers. On Shavuot,
however, we remind ourselves of the joy of
deep and mindful study – we contemplate
the spiritual and ethical dimensions of life.
We call Shavuot z’man matan Torataynu
– the time of the giving of our Torah. It celebrates
the moment on Mount Sinai when
heaven and earth kissed and Torah was giv-
by Rabbi Micah J. Peltz
ravmicah@tbsonline.org
en to us through Moses. To celebrate the
receiving of the Torah on Shavuot we study
it. About 400 years ago, a group of mystics
from the city of Tzfat began to commemorate
this great event in our history with a
Tikkun – an all-night study session. Today,
this celebration of Torah lives on in Jewish
communities all over the world. It will live
on in our community this Shavuot as well.
On page 19 in Temple Talk is a schedule of
learning sessions for the first night of
Shavuot on Saturday night, May 26. I hope
you will take a look and come out for some
meaningful study.
The word “Tikkun” means “repair.”
Studying Torah inspires us to repair our
souls and repair the world. As the Talmud
teaches: “Study is great for it leads to action.”
But for study to be meaningful, it can’t be
done while distracted. It requires not browsing
but analyzing, not skimming but scrutinizing.
Through study, we are reminded of
the things that are really meaningful in life:
Torah, tradition, community, family and
friends.
When we think about Shavuot in this
way, perhaps the scheduling conflict with
Memorial Day Weekend is not such a conflict
after all. In fact, maybe it enriches our
observance of each holiday. Though
Memorial Day has become a nice opportunity
to get away to the beach and to barbeque,
we know it is about more than that.
It is about honoring our veterans, remembering
those brave soldiers who gave their
lives for our country, and counting our
blessings as Americans. It is easy for the
meaning of this solemn day to be forgotten
in the midst of our plans. But Memorial Day
recalls too many important pieces of our
national history to be ignored.
On Monday, May 28, we will commemorate
both Memorial Day and the second day
of Shavuot – a day in our Jewish calendar
when we recite Yizkor. This year, we will
pause to remember our loved ones as well
as the courageous men and women who
died defending our country. There are
scheduling conflicts, and then again some
things happen for a reason. May the confluence
of Shavuot and Memorial Day
Weekend this year enrich our observance of
both of these holidays. See you in shul.
ffective July 1st, 2014, Rabbi Micah
Peltz will become the Senior Rabbi of TBS.
He will be the third senior rabbi in our history,
succeeding Rabbi Albert Lewis z’’l, and
Rabbi Steven Lindemann. How blessed we
are to have had such wonderful rabbis lead
our congregation, and to have found such
a worthy successor! Rabbi Peltz began earning
our admiration and respect from the
first time he visited TBS in March of 2007.
Like Rabbis Lewis and Lindemann before
him, he brings inspirational spiritual leadership,
compassion and caring, serious scholarship,
engaging teaching, and much good
humor to our TBS family.
How it is that TBS has been so fortunate?
How have we been able to attract and keep
such outstanding rabbis? I do not believe
there is much mystery in that: just look
around during any TBS Shabbat morning
service, adult education program, social
event or other occasion when we gather as
a community. Our TBS family is comprised
of members who care deeply about Jewish
traditions, continuity, and living a life
infused with Jewish values and mitzvot. We
care about our community, about the
A Memorable Year
It’s been quite a year at Temple Beth
Sholom and we still have Passover, the
Tribute Dinner, Shavuot & Confirmation
and even more still ahead.
In August we welcomed Alex Weinberg
as our Director of Congregational Learning
and watched as he made significant strides
in energizing, modernizing and “enjoyifying”
our schools and our Youth and Family
Services.
After the excitement of the High Holy
Days and Sukkot subsided, we went right
into one of the most enjoyable and successful
events we’ve ever held at TBS –
the “Taste of Broadway” program on
October 30. Over 700 people were
thrilled by the fabulous music and singing
voices that night. Mark your calendars
now for October 21, 2012 as, by popular
demand, we are planning a second
are proud of our
may not always agree about specific decisions
that are made (we are Jewish, after
the center of our Jewish lives. Given the
we are about, what young rabbinical student
wouldn’t want to become a leader of
our vibrant community?
On a Shabbat weekend in March, 2007,
at the invitation of our search committee,
soon-to-be Rabbi Micah Peltz, and his wife
Rachel Zivic, came to visit TBS. Coming
from the Midwest, I am not sure that either
of them knew much about Cherry Hill, and
I do not think that either of them seriously
thought that TBS, and Cherry Hill, would
be their new home. But spending a very
busy Shabbat and weekend with our congregants,
Mazel Tov to TBS
March 2012
Dear Steve, Micah and Jen,
Warm congratulations on the announcement last week about
your future roles at TBS. This is great news for all of us, and
not just the TBS community. You are shining lights to me about
what is possible.
You are proof positive that leadership makes a difference, that
individuals of substance make a difference to people’s lives,
and that Conservative Judaism has a lot to say to the current
and future generations. I am especially proud of JTS’ role in
helping you become the leaders you are. Thanks for all you
do. I shep great nachas from your achievement.
Beth Sholom. Please plan to attend the
dinner and also consider thanking our
honorees by placing an ad in the Tribute
Journal.
Oh, I almost forgot (well, not really) –
we also completed the renovation of our
sanctuary, sanctuary lobby and main lobby
areas. Our “Why It Matters” campaign,
as of this date (February 15) has raised
over $3.29 million. This will enable us to
completely pay for the renovations and, as
promised, pay down a significant piece of
our mortgage. The magnificent Donor
Recognition wall across from the Gift
Shop, created for this campaign by artist
Bonnie Cohen, was selected for entry into
a very prestigious arts competition.
I didn’t mention the snow in October
and the earthquake in August but they
were pretty memorable too.
What has been most memorable for you
from your TBS year? Please let me know
and perhaps I’ll publish a list in an upcoming
President’s Message
(Continued from p. 4)
ill at that time,) must have left quite an
impression. As their weekend at TBS was
ending on Sunday morning, I was searching
the building for Rabbi Peltz in order to
say goodbye. Not finding him, I asked a
search committee member if he knew
where he was. The answer: “Rabbi
Lindemann has taken him to meet Rabbi
Lewis.” The result: the chain of exceptional
TBS rabbis continues, unbroken.
Please join us on Sunday, April 22nd,
when we will pay tribute to Rabbi Peltz for
his five years of exceptional service to TBS,
and also recognize his new role as our
future spiritual leader. We will also be honoring
Edward Adleman and Sandy and Jeff
Brown, TBS members whose love for and
commitment to the synagogue has had a
profound and lasting impact. TBS continues
to be a magnet for the Conservative
movement’s “best and brightest” because
we have members like Eddie, Sandy and
Jeff. It will be a wonderful chance to celebrate
all of our good fortune!
Counting of the Omer
Those who know me, know how much
I look forward to Pesach – counting the
months and weeks till this wonderful holiday
of springtime arrives. Besides the pleasant
season, there are the traditional foods,
the clean house, the family gathered
around the Seder table, etc. I have even
been heard saying “only 11 months and 3
weeks till next Pesach” while putting away
the dishes at the end of Pesach!
Our tradition has
several instances of us
looking forward to
major holidays – for
Pesach, we have several
special Shabbatot
beginning before
Purim which serve to
remind us that Pesach
is coming, we don’t
recite Tachanun (daily
prayers of penitence)
during the entire
month in which
Pesach falls. During
the month preceding
Rosh Hashana, we blow the shofar each
weekday morning to remind us of the coming
Day of Judgement, and recite a special
Psalm (Psalm 27) morning and night.
The prime example of our anticipating a
holiday is the period between Pesach and
Shavuot. The Torah commands us to count
seven full weeks during this time. Pesach,
of course, marks the time of our leaving
Egypt and becoming a free people; Shavuot
marks the Giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai.
We aren’t really free without a structured
society, one based on law and order. As we
look forward to the holiday of Shavuot, we
count each day and each week, reminding
us to make each day of our lives count.
The Torah instructs us to do this counting
with sheaves of barley (known as
Omer, hence the seven week period is
known as Sefirat HaOmer – the counting of
the Omer). In Biblical times, our people
lived in an agricultural society, and since
Pesach represented the planting season this
counting was couched in terms of anticipating
the first harvest (Shavuot is also
known as Chag HaBikurim – the holiday of
the first fruits). Today, since we don’t have
the Temple for bringing sacrifices, we simply
count the days verbally.
The counting begins at the Second Seder
after we drink the fourth cup of wine but
before we sing the songs at the end. We
6
The Torah
count seven full
weeks during
this time.
by Alvin Stern
eyeontorah@aol.com
recite a blessing and then say “today is first
day of the omer.” For the remainder of the
Sefirah period, we do the counting towards
the end of the Ma’ariv (evening) service.
Since the Torah commands to count seven
full weeks, we wait until dark to say the
blessing, thus ensuring that the previous
day was indeed a full one. Again, there is a
profound lesson here for each of us – that
each day is important in the totality of our
lives, without any one
of the many days that
make up the sum total
of our lives, our personal
history would be
incomplete.
During the interval
between Pesach and
Shavuot, in the time of
the Roman occupation
of Israel, there was a
devastating plague
that affected the rabbis
and their students. To
commemorate this, it
is traditional to consider
the Sefirah as a period of semi-mourning
– weddings and other festive
celebrations aren’t scheduled, and many
don’t cut their hair or shave (unless this
would be problematic in the secular
world). Since the plague ended on the
thirty-third day of the counting (known as
Lag Ba’omer), this day has become something
of a scholar’s holiday, and a time
when the prohibitions of the rest of the
period are lifted. Many young boys receive
their first hair cut following their third
birthday on this day. In addition to Lag
Ba’omer, weddings may also take place on
the two Roshei Chodesh which fall
between Pesach and Shavuot.
So, this year, start a new tradition if you
don’t already do this – take a moment each
night, beginning at the Second Seder, to
recite the bracha, “Baruch atta adoshem,
elohenu melech ha’olam, asher kedishonu
b’mitzvotav, v’zivanu al sefirat ha’omer”
and then say “hayom yom….. la’omer”.
Sefirat Ha’omer can be found in any Siddur,
and if you go online you can find Sefirat
HaOmer calendars for this particular year.
By doing so, you will be reminded of how
important each day is, how once the day is
gone you can’t relive it, and you will be
counting the days looking forward to
Shavuot, when we received the Torah and
thus became the people we are today.

Congregational Learning
Alex Weinberg
Director of
Congregational
Learning
As Passover ends, we enter a season of
counting. Traditionally we start counting the
49 days between Passover and Shavuot
called the “Omer.” The Omer has taken on
many forms in our history. It began as a time
of celebration and connecting with the Beit
HaMikdash, the temple in Jerusalem. Later it
recounted times in our history when we
fought for our Jewish identity and right to
survive. Today the Omer period includes
other periods that we count in addition to
receiving Torah at Har Sinai on Shavuot.
Our families count:
• The days left until the end of school
• The days until summer camps and USY
Pilgrimage begin
• The days until summer vacations
It has been an amazing year of learning,
celebrating and connecting with our synagogue
community. Thank you for your commitment
to our schools and our synagogue.
We look forward to sharing many more
learning moments together with your family
in the years to come! As our families begin all
of the countdowns that end our school year,
we, the education staff, came up with our
countdown of our favorite moments
throughout this school year:
• Preschool celebrated Hanukkah at
Barnes and Noble where the iShir choir
made their debut.
• In the Exploratorium, the children tended
and cared for twelve eggs in an incubator
that hatched into fluffy, cuddly chicks.
• Preschool celebrated Read Across
America Week. They participated in a
Tzedakah project that collected 200 pairs of
shoes that were donated to families in need.
During this week, Mayor Chuck Cahn officiated
“Whacky Wednesday” by reading this
wonderful Dr. Seuss selection to the preschool.
The fifth grade class from Kellman
Brown Academy partnered with the
Kindergarten Enrichment class to read their
favorite Dr. Seuss stories. During the weekly
Shabbat program the clergy read to the children
“The Grinch Who Stole Shabbat”.
• Our Preschool family came together for
a Friday night Shabbat service led by the children.
Each age level led a prayer in the service.
Our Kindergartners and fours daven
regularly with Alex.
• Preschool was awarded the Solomon
Schechter Award for Early Childhood
Education.
• Our 10th grade students traveled,
prayed and learned in Israel for 15 days!
• 8th grade students spent a fun and
thought-provoking Shabbat together on the
8th grade retreat. Many students shared that
highlights for them were spending all of
Shabbat in a community with all their friends
around and getting to stop services to ask
Rabbi Peltz any question they wanted.
• Planned by teens and for teens, our
High School youth group programming is
taking off! We’ve traveled to NYC, bowled,
made delicious latkes, and traveled to conventions
together!
• Religious School students joined together
for an AWESOME Purim Megillah reading
and music videos created by the Gimmel
class. What a great way to hear the megillah,
celebrate Purim and have a BLAST as a synagogue
community.
• Our 9th grade students participated in
the Grocery Story Challenge, shopping for
the JFCS Food Pantry on a food stamp budget.
Did you see the article about this amazing
project in the Cherry Hill Sun?
• Dalet students led a beautiful and
meaningful Shabbat morning service for our
community. Our Dalet students led the service,
14 students read Torah for the first time
and even read parts of the Haftarah. But the
highlight of the Dalet class has to be participating
with them in the World Wide Wrap.
Our Dalet students lay tefillin every Sunday
— they can lead the weekday morning service
and they LOVE to daven. At the World
Wide Wrap they infused a ruah in the sanctuary
with their love of tefillah—prayer.
• 9th grade students studied about the
Shoah, heard firsthand accounts from a survivor
and a liberator and traveled together to
see the D.C. Holocaust Museum.
• Our Mechina Aleph families went on an
“Epic Adventure” that included Abraham’s
tent, camels and more. We created family
blessings as we celebrated our time together
on our journey.
• 7th and 8th graders enjoyed a hamburger
bar and combination game show and
Megillah — read by our very own Cantor
Piggy and co-hosted by Alex and Beverly.
• We are proud of our Aleph students for
first creating beautiful Siddur covers and then
participating in their Consecration service.
• Our Religious School families came
together for a number of Shabbat dinners
throughout the year that were fun, full of
ruah — spirit and a great celebration of
Shabbat as a school community. The highlight
of the Shabbat dinners was having the
Mechina Bet students lead all of the berakhot
of the Shabbat dinner table including the full
Kiddush and Birkat HaMazon.
• Our Bet class came together for our first
Havdallah Café. Our students celebrated the
beautiful Havdallah service and then we all
enjoyed fondue and smores—a new havdallah
tradition here at TBS.
• It was wonderful to begin the school
year by getting to meet all of our new families
at our opening Religious School program,
ShaBBQ and other fun events. We
especially enjoyed welcoming over 25 new
Gan students to our Religious School!

Sisterhood President’s Message
We have gone through many changes
at TBS in the past year and will
continue to do so in the upcoming year.
From Rabbi Lindemann’s announcement
that he will become Rabbi Emeritus to
Rabbi Peltz’s rise to Senior Rabbi to the
contract renewal of Cantor Cohen and the
new position for Jennifer Stofman. While
there is change there is also comfort in
knowing that the strong leadership at TBS
is still intact.
Sisterhood will go through some
changes as well. We will elect a new
Executive Board and General Board as
the term of the current Boards have been
fulfilled. I appreciate all the hard work
and dedication these women have given
to Sisterhood and Temple Beth Sholom
over the past two years. Their desire to
lead and help make Sisterhood and the
What’s Up in Sisterhood
Sisterhood Shabbat
Sisterhood Shabbat was absolutely
beautiful. We want to thank everyone
who read from Torah and especially the
first time readers. You did a great job! And
we want to extend a special thank you to
everyone who participated in other parts
of the service. It is so wonderful to be a
part of this special Shabbat celebrating
women and our Jewish heritage. We
thank you all. And we also want to thank
the committee who worked so hard on
making it so beautiful and run smoothly
without a glitch. A very warm thank you
to Amy Blackstone, Rosanne Goodman,
Evelyn Berkowitz, Jane Kramer, Julie
Lehrman and Sue K. Levine. None of this
would have been possible without the
help, assistance and guidance of Cantor
Cohen, Robin Kaufman and Ann
Sundstrom.
We would like to thank all of those
people who contributed to the special
Kiddush following the service.
Also a special thank you goes to Sarah
synagogue a better place is greatly
admired. We will install our new
Executive Board and Board of Directors
on May 22. I am confident that the new
slate of officers will be as committed and
dedicated to the mission of Sisterhood as
those before them. Please come out on
May 22 and support the new Sisterhood
team. There will be an opportunity to
meet the officers after the installation and
let them know how you would like to get
involved.
Change is often necessary to keep an
organization vital and current and to help
it grow. I hope you will embrace the
changes we are making and come along
on the journey with us. We have room for
you all!
Kabbalistic Prayer
“Kabbalistic Prayer – Mystic Meditations
and Mantras in the Siddur” with Rabbis
Lindemann and Peltz and Cantor Cohen.
Jewish mysticism has had a significant
influence on the Siddur from the very
beginning. Many of the prayers with
which you are quite familiar have sources
in Kabbalah, from Kabbalat Shabbat to
Ein Keloheinu. This class will provide
plenty of spiritual food for thought. You
bring the lunch and we’ll bring the learn.
Tuesday Night Talmud: Masekhet
Horayot with Rabbi Lindemann
Horayot – Rulings – is one of the smallest
tractates of the Talmud. What happens
when courts or religious authorities err in
their rulings on matters of Jewish law and
practice? Who is responsible? What are
the relative rights and obligations of
courts, rulers and individuals? When it
comes to rights and privileges, is there an
order of precedence among economic
and social groups or individuals? In addition
to dealing with these matters, there
are stories and legends about the Ark,
Manna, Aaron’s staff and various Biblical
characters. As always, our study will consider
the text from a variety of perspectives:
legal, historical, literary and
religious.
The 80s. What a great decade!
MTV, shoulder pads, leg warmers and
really big hair. As I write this, I’m starting
to strategically plan my outfit for YMG’s
“Awesome 80s Dance Party” which, by the
time you read this, will have taken place
on March 24th.
It’s exciting to think about gathering
at TBS with friends and reliving the
memories of our childhoods! How will
the room be decorated? Will they play
my favorite songs? Will we get to do the
Electric Slide? The Bermans and the
Weiss’ have put so much careful thought
into coordinating every aspect of this 80s
event, that it will have undoubtedly
been amazing and inspired “totally awesome”
memories.
Speaking of 80s memories, some of
the most vivid in my mind involve TBS.
1987 was my first year as a synagogue
member, and sometimes it feels like yesterday!
Two years later, on a very rainy
day in January, our congregation proudly
marched the Torahs from our old
home in Haddon Heights to our new
home in Cherry Hill. It’s impossible to
forget the energy and ruah that filled
TBS’ new sanctuary that day!
Though the 80s have come and gone,
some things remain consistent. We still
have a vibrant TBS family. Our sanctuary
has been updated and feels as magnificent
and warm as the day we arrived.
And, most importantly, we continue to
be blessed with esteemed clergy to lead
our large congregation.
Morning Minyan
Rabbi Lindemann, Rabbi Peltz and Cantor
Cohen each lead a short study session
one day a week after minyan (7 – 8 am).
Tuesdays: Cantor Cohen will look at
“The Book of Jewish Values” by Rabbi
Joseph Telushkin. Discussing this guide
to ethical living will be a meaningful start
to your day.
Wednesdays: Rabbi Lindemann will continue
studying Pirke Avot, the Ethics of
the Fathers, with the minyan. This 3rd
century text provides fascinating insights
into the development of Judaism, conflicts
with Roman rulers, and the com-
On April 22nd, our own Rabbi Peltz
will be honored at TBS’ inaugural
Tribute Dinner for his five years with our
synagogue. Our Young Members’ Group
Committee would like to take this
opportunity to wish him a heartfelt
Mazel Tov. Among the many roles that
Rabbi Peltz plays at TBS, he serves as
YMG’s professional advisor. He provides
our committee, as well as our entire generation,
with spiritual wisdom, support,
and a continuously open door. We are
extremely fortunate to receive his guidance,
and we’re thankful to have ongoing
opportunities and events to share
with him, Rachel, Yael and Ari. Young
Members’ Group simply would not be
what it is without his nurturing leadership
style. We are grateful. Mazel Tov to
Rabbi Peltz on his first five years at TBS
– we hope to celebrate a lifetime of simchas
together! Let’s show him our support
by attending TBS’ Tribute Dinner
on April 22nd – I hope to see you there!
On a final note, it’s 2012 and it’s
been 25 years since I first came to TBS.
Shoulder pads and big hair have gone
Men’s Club
Something interesting happened in
January. Men’s Club held a new event.
Jews, Brews and Views. The Jews and the
Brews part is self explanatory. As for the Views,
no we didn’t invite Joy Behar and Whoopi
Goldberg to discuss the world of entertainment
– though that may be a good idea. We invited
our own Rabbi Peltz to discuss a piece of text
from the Talmud – a somewhat edgy piece of
text at that.
And what did we find? We found that this
type of programming appeals to the men of
TBS. Who knew? The men of TBS are actually
interested in Judaism. It seems somewhat self
evident as I write it. Yet, with so many other
opportunities around TBS focused on spirituality,
I truly didn’t appreciate the role of this type
of programming within a Men’s Club. Lawyers,
doctors, accountants, business owners and other
professionals took time out of their busy
schedules to participate in the discussion.
We thought that the recipe for a successful
Men’s Club event was sports, beef and grownup
refreshments. It turns out that you don’t
need the sports and the beef. And I now have
a feeling that even without the grown-up
refreshments, the Judaic text theme would be a
sufficient draw. But why mess with a good
thing. Our plan is to hold a series of similar
events involving Jewish Men, Grown-Up
Refreshments and Jewish Text (not quite as
catchy as Jews, Brews and Views) throughout
the year. In fact, by the time this article publishes,
we will hopefully have had a second JBV
under our belt and will be planning our third.
We are also gearing up once again for TBS
Softball. We have over 60 men signed up.
That’s 120 hamstrings, but who’s counting. If
you are interested, it’s not too late.
And stay tuned for more information about
the following events planned for the remainder
of the 2011-2012 year:
• Sixers Night
• Saltzman Senior Prom
• Date Night
• Riversharks Night
• More Jews, Brews & Views
• Business Networking Breakfast
As always, if you have any suggestions for
Men’s Club programming, or you wish to get
more involved in Men’s Club, or you just want
to add me to your contacts to expand the list of
people your tuchus randomly dials while you
are driving, here is my contact info:
