Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents / Caregivers
We will all remember Term IV 2011 as the shortest
term on record, and it has certainly put pressure on
us all to complete the year with efficiency and care.
By now you should have received the invitation to
your son’s or daughter’s prizegiving and we hope
you will be able to attend and join us to celebrate
what has been a great year in the history of the
school.
Our prefects, led by Beatrice Leathem and Oliver
Brown, have put a number of new events in place
which will be part of the calendar for the years
ahead. We all appreciate the prefects’ generosity in
spending time to ensure these events go well and
the benefit they bring to the life of the school is
immeasurable.
Our second group of senior students leaves on
Friday for the leadership camp in the Tongariro
National Park, the first group is already at camp.
The programme for these camps is designed to
teach and develop leadership and to provide
physical challenges along the way (overnight tramp
to the summit of Mt Tongariro, white water rafting,
rock climbing and abseiling). A further four camps
take place at the beginning of the holidays: Year 10
students go sea kayaking and Year 9 students do the
Coast to Coast journey through the Kauaeranga
Valley on the Coromandel Peninsula.
As the year comes to a close we send very best
wishes to those families who are ending their
associations with the College and wish the students
every success for their future school careers.

2011 New Zealand Economics Competition
Congratulations to Oliver Brown (13DAV) and Matthew
Harvey (12DAW) who were placed 1 st and 7 th respectively in
this competition ‐ a very fine result for Mrs van der Loos’s
Economics class. Oliver received a trophy and both boys
received cash prizes.
This competition has been administered by The University of
Auckland Business School since 2008 and the aim is to test
the theory of Economics as well as general knowledge of
current economic issues. Since its inception in 1997, the
competition has grown in size and reputation becoming the
largest and most prestigious competition of its kind for
secondary students.
This year the academic elite from 125 schools throughout
New Zealand took part, comprising 2,707 students. Oliver’s
and Matthew’s achievements are outstanding and, together
with Mrs van der Loos, they deserve our heartfelt
congratulations.
University of Otago Senior Schools Science Quiz
And another great result – Ryan Beets (11SHA) came 3 rd in
this competition and Stefani Bulte (11MAS) gained a Merit
award. Well done indeed to both these students.
Mountain Biking
Congratulations to Harriet Beavan (11LOT) and Logan Griffin
(12WMS) who came 2 nd in the team competition at the end
of October. This was a great achievement, especially as they
were competing against teams of four so Harriet and Logan
had to ride many more laps than everyone else.
Central Auckland Boys Hockey
Congratulations to Jack Roberts
(6TEM) who was selected to join
the Year 6 Central Auckland
team. They played in the three
day McGrath Cup Competition in
Rotorua last holidays when the
team gave a very fine
performance.
Masters Tennis Tournament, Blenheim
Lana Popovich (8FLI) gained a place in the final of the
Masters Tennis Tournament in Blenheim. Previously Lana
was one of three girls who represented New Zealand at the
Australian Optus 12’s Nationals in Sydney and won four out
of six of her matches. The Masters Tournament brings
together the top eight players in each age group, following
guidelines set by Tennis New Zealand.

Primary School Deans’ Assembly
This took place earlier this term and the Junior Choir and
Marimba group entertained the staff and students. This was
the first time they’d performed together.

Cross Country and Orienteering
The weather was perfect for this event on 11 th November
and students from Years 1 to 10 took part.

Year 1 Students question the Principal
Mr Edmeades had a visitation from students in Year 1 who
were investigating the various jobs people do, especially
around the school, as part of a Humanities topic. They had
prepared a number searching questions which Mr Edmeades
did his best to answer.
Year 4 Students find Musical Instruments to Suit
Students in Year 4 had the opportunity to try out several
musical instruments with a view to finding the most
appropriate one to learn. Dr Garner and other music
teachers helped the students, as well as David Lawson
(13GNR) whose practical approach was a great help ‐ see
picture below!

Sports/Groups Information
Art Club
Mrs Williams has run the Art Club this year and she is very
pleased with the enthusiasm and talents of the students.
Some examples of activities in the Year 9 club follow:
Volleyball
Three teams of students in Years 9 to 10 have been playing
in competition this term with varying degrees of success.
Basketball
Well done to the Years 7 and 8 team who came 4 th in the
competition.
Our Years 4 to 6 team finished in the top eight teams ‐ this is
a great result as a lot of the time they were playing against
teams comprised solely of Year 6 students.
Tennis
Our Junior Tennis team won their competition in which they
had been involved throughout the year.
Our Intermediate team won this term’s competition but
sadly missed out on winning the combined competition.
However the tennis teams all thoroughly enjoy their practice
games and they have had a great year overall.
2012
Both Lacrosse and Triathlon are on the agenda for next year.

of these sports.
Bridge
This has been a great success this year. Thanks go to New
Zealand Bridge for providing us with an instructor and all the
equipment we need. They will continue to do this next year.
