THE GLACIAL HERITAGE AREA
The Glacial Heritage Area (GHA) is
a network of parks, wildlife and natural
areas, historic and cultural sites, waterways
and preserves – all connected by trails and
waterways, like pearls on a string. The GHA is
primarily in Jefferson County, but some portions
are also in Rock, Dodge, and Dane counties. It
supports high-quality grasslands, wetlands and
forests, interspersed with productive agricultural
land, and provides a wide range of outdoor,
nature-based recreation while sustaining viable
farming operations. The mission is to connect
more people to the land through recreation,
conservation and tourism through conservation
parks, linking trails, wildlife areas and riverbased
recreation. For more information, please
visit the Glacial Heritage Area website at
GREAT OUTDOOR WINTER ACTIVITIES
Jefferson County is the place to be for
snowmobilers in the winter. With over 472
miles of well-marked trails that traverse every
nook and cranny of the countryside, snowmobile
enthusiasts will never get tired of the scenery.
40 Jefferson County: THE OFFICIAL GUIDE 2013
County trails are funded by the Wisconsin
Snowmobile Grant and Aid Program and
maintained by the Jefferson County Snowmobile
Alliance, which represents 18 local clubs. These
clubs have bridged streams, worked with private
land owners, and have gotten permission to use
utility easements and public rights-of-way to
provide a wide ranging tour of hills and dales,
woodlands and waterways. Snowmobiles are
permitted on the 39 mile limestone section of
the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, but not the
paved asphalt section between Waukesha and
Dousman, although an alternate route can be
used west of Mickle Road to Dousman.
Visit the Jefferson County Snowmobile
Alliance’s website at www.jcsawi.com, and be
parks. Download the Jefferson
