RECREATION (CONT.) paved, separated grade trail. From Fort Atkinson, it is a mix of trail and on-road connections. Free water, air and a resting spot are provided by 2 Rivers Bicycles & Outdoor (see pg 41) in the Fort Atkinson portion of this trail. This spectacular recreational attraction features an archway, bronze sculptures, rest areas and fountains - making it a relaxing and scenic adventure. The trail now runs from south of Fort Atkinson to Watertown and beyond. Another great ride, called the Waterloo Tour, starts at Commons Park in Lake Mills and meanders through the farm fields to Waterloo. Take a tour of TREK USA when in Waterloo and start dreaming about your next bike! And not to be confused with the Glacial River Bike Trail, the Glacial Drumlin State Trail is one of Wisconsin’s most popular bicycle trails. Developed in 1986, the trail starts in Cottage Grove (just east of Madison) and heads east for 52 miles where it connects with other trails in the Fox River Sanctuary in Waukesha. The trail is open to cyclists, walkers, joggers and roller bladers. A pass is required before using the trail and is valid on all other state trails. Annual fee: $20; daily fee: $4. No pass is required for hikers or children under the age of 16. You can find more information at www.glacialdrumlin.com. Don’t have a bike? No problem! You can rent a bike along the Glacial Drumlin State Trail by calling 920- 648-8774 at the office in Lake Mills. Get your legs in shape on the Emma Carlin Trail, offering a challenging ride on less-traveled paths. The trail is comprised of three loops, with difficult sections covering nearly 40 miles. The west end of the Green Loop has a particularly tough uphill grind. For a total challenge, take the formidable Connector Trail south to the John Muir Trail (Palmyra). Organized bike rides are another great way to see Jefferson County. Group rides are held 5 days per week, and begin at 2 Rivers Bicycle and Outdoor in Fort Atkinson. Ride the Rock and Tour 42 Jefferson County: THE OFFICIAL GUIDE 2013 de Fort are merging into one large bicycling festival. Three days, September 13-15, of cycling (races and recreational rides), entertainment and a bicycle expo at the Jefferson County Fair Park. You can also schedule an organized group bike ride through the scenic named town roads and lettered country roads of the beautiful Kettle Moraine State Forest with Backyard Bike & Ski Shop in Whitewater – www.backyardbikes.com. County bicycle maps and Glacial Heritage Watertrail maps are available at trail heads, city and village halls, libraries, and Chamber of Commerce offices. You can also contact the Jefferson County Parks Department at 920-674-7260 or by email at janes@jeffersoncountywi.gov to request a copy. Whether you belong to a club or just sign up for an individual race, you will be exhilarated by the running opportunities in Jefferson County. The Ragnar Relay in June is a seasoned run which begins in Madison and winds
through Jefferson County on the way to the finish line in Chicago. Run for the Rock has added a multi-stage triathlon to their annual June run. You can run a half marathon in June, bike 56 miles in July and swim 1.2 miles in August. With a break between tri’s like that – imagine the possibilities!
