The Towerlight February 18, 2008 18 BASEBALL Carrie Wood Assistant News Editor Despite being picked to finish next to last in 2008 on the CAA’s Web site, Towson has an optimistic view of the upcoming season. “We’re picked to finish pretty low,” outfielder Brian Conley said. “But we’re looking to surprise some teams and finish a lot higher than they’re expecting us to.” Last season, the Tigers finished their season 21 – 30 overall and 11 – 18 in their conference, leaving them at the bottom of the CAA and just out of contention for the conference tournament. This year, they hope to end their regular season stronger than in the past and make it to the postseason tournament. “We had a rough year last year. We came really close to making the tournament, but there were a lot of teams low in the CAA so we were tossed up with them,” closer Jon Dupski said. “We came within 2008 Spring Sports Preview Strong infield, new rotation highlight 2008 Tigers two games of making the tournament but ended up not [making it]. I think we’ll do a lot better this year.” Although they were once the top home-run hitting team in the nation, the Tigers have now switched their focus to pitching. Hopefully somebody will step above everyone else and make it known that he’s our best guy.” Defensively, the Tigers have held on to sophomore Nick Natoli at shortstop and junior Gary Helmick at second base, both who contributed to a productive infield last season and helped to break the school record for double-plays. “Last year I think we were probably the top defensive team “Last year I were prob top defensiv in the CAA,” Helmick said. “If it all comes together we should be about the same as, if, not better than last year.” The rest of the infield has yet to be set by the coaching staff as far as an everyday lineup goes. Conley, a senior, has proven himself as a consistent hitter over his last three seasons at Towson, and is expected to continue in the same fashion this spring. Conley expects the team to do Last year I think we were probably the top defensive team in the CAA. If it all comes together, we should be about the same as, if not better than last year. well at the plate, even if they don’t blast the ball out of the park. “I don’t think we’re going to be a team that hits a lot of home runs,” Conley said. “But we have a lot of good solid contact hitters.” With so few slots actually set in stone for the Tigers’ starting lineup, the younger members of the team will have more of a chance to step up. Freshmen on this year’s team include righthanded pitcher Charles Cononie, lefty Andrew Newfield, and fielders Steve Freinberg, Beau Banglesdorf, and Brady Baxter. “We’re young. There are a lot of freshmen and sophomores,” reliever Corey Cascio said. “We’re going to need people to step up this year.” Towson will be beginning its season on the road at the end of the month, on Feb. 22 against Saint Mary’s College in California. “We’re trying to start earlier to get as many games in as possible,” Cascio said. “It’s pretty exciting.
