The Towerlight February 18, 2008 30 Who got the best of the Mike Bibby deal? Kevin: The Hawks knew that a steady, veteran point guard was exactly what they needed, and they got one in Bibby. No team over the past two seasons has been able to acquire the oft-rumored Bibby, who was considered a salary dump by the Kings. But the Hawks were able to get him without giving away any of their considerable young talent and have firmly asserted themselves as a serious playoff contender in the Eastern Conference after adding a strong veteran presence. Pete: The Sacramento Kings definitely got the better end of this deal. Why do the Hawks want Bibby? To win a championship? Sure, good luck, Atlanta. Seriously, the Hawks will make it into the playoffs as a low seed at best, and will get trounced in the first round by Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, or Orlando. This team is not going anywhere, and by throwing away its future, it has pretty much guaranteed that they won’t have one in the near future. The Kings, however, know that Bibby is worth more to everyone else than he was to Sacramento. They gave him up for four serviceable players and a future draft pick. What’s not to like? Besides Memphis, who is the best mid-major? Kevin: The best mid-major resides right here in the CAA. George Mason has the depth, talent and experience that other midmajors lack after making the Final Four a couple seasons ago. Coach Jim Larranaga has a team that features the inside-outside combo of Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell, who were both vital parts of the Cinderella run. John Vaughn and long-range bomber Dre Smith add to the potent offensive mix and it is clear the Patriots are out to prove they aren’t just a one-trick pony. Pete: No, no. The Patriots are good, but watch out for Xavier. Nobody knows much about the Musketeers because none of them score more than 12 points per game. But they also have six different players averaging double digits this season. The Cincinnati Jesuit school’s no-name roster includes tiny Oklahoma transfer Drew Lavender, who is somehow pulling in almost three rebounds on top of 11.7 points per game despite his five-foot-seveninch stature. Lavender also notches 4.8 assists per game to lead the Musketeers in that category as well as points. I have to give a shout-out, though, to Drake and Butler, two mid-majors who have had unbelievable seasons and deserve honorable mention. pete kevin LORENZ/HESS What should Miami do with the No. 1 pick? Kevin: After watching the success of Mario Williams this year, the Dolphins would be foolish to pass on another stud defensive end, Chris Long from Virginia. Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano have been adamant about their preference to rebuild the Dolphins with the 3-4 defense and Long is a perfect cornerstone. He is a high-motor, productive player who will make an immediate impact. Defense wins championships, and Long seems to be the logical selection for the team to begin rebuilding. Pete: The Miami Dolphins need to trade this pick to the highest bidder. The pick is so valuable right now because there is so much talent at the very top. What team with a mid-round draft pick wouldn’t give away its selection, along with a small fortune, to get a crack at Chris Long, Glen Dorsey, Darren McFadden, or Jake Long? There are so many clubs that can find more value in the top pick than the Dolphins can. Miami can’t remedy its problems with one player, and having the first pick in each later round would easily justify trading this away for a proven talent. Which team will have the best spring season? Kevin: The women’s lacrosse team is motivated and on a mission to prove last season’s 6-9 record was a fluke. Plenty of talent remains on the roster, headlined by star junior Hillary Fratzke, but it is their depth and experience that will be the keys to the season. It is clear last season left a bad taste in their mouths and that they are ready to dominate on the path back to the top of the CAA. Pete: I look forward to seeing the women’s lacrosse team get over the hump to win more close games, but the men’s team has already proven itself to be at the top of the conference. Most of the CAA seems to be looking up at Towson each year, and with senior leadership on offense, defense and in the goal, the Tigers should once again win the regular season crown – and finally get back to winning the conference tournament. The team might actually make it through the first round of the NCAA tournament, too, if it can avoid playing teams like Cornell to open it up. The key, however will be getting scoring out of players beyond the big three. sports ODU: Monarchs top Tigers From page 32 for Old Dominion star guard TJ Jordan, who entered the game fourth in the CAA in scoring at 14.4 points per game, yet shot just 2-10 from the field and scored just five points, all in the second half. Pym’s 12 rebounds were part of the Monarchs’ domination on the boards, as the team out-rebounded the Tigers 47-28. The inside threeheaded monster of Pym, Tiffany Green and Jess Canady out-muscled Towson and helped the team get to the free-throw line 25 times. Senior forward Megan Pym recorded her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Tiffany Green added nine points, eight rebounds, and a team-high five blocks. The Monarchs out rebounded the Tigers 47-28, including 22-13 on the offensive boards, and doubled Towson up, 40-20, in points in the paint. Tigers’ bench struggles While sophomore Shanae Baker- Brice, senior Jamell Beasley, and senior forward Holly Mahan all scored in double figures, Towson still lacked production from the bench against Old Dominion. Freshman Meredith Kennedy matched her career-high with five points, but no other reserve player managed to contribute. In total, the Old Dominion bench outscored the Towson bench, 26-9. Freshman guard Jasmine Parker came off the ODU bench to score 10 points while sophomore forward Jessica Canady added 11 point and eight rebounds off the bench. Second half rally falls short After falling behind by as many as 17 points, Towson mounted a comeback early in the second half. Towson started the second half on a 19-10 run. A Holly Mahan threepointer closed the gap to 49-43 with 12:07 remaining in the game. However, the Tigers could pull no closer as Old Dominion went on a 22-11 run to counter the Towson streak. A Pym lay-up at the 3:01 mark gave the Monarchs a 67-52 second half advantage. The 15-point lead was ODU’s largest of the second half, and the Tigers never recovered. -Paul Williams ROBERTS: Last-place finish is inevitable From page 32 and trade second baseman Brian Roberts before the start of the season. I advocated this move in a previous column -- it has nothing to do with Roberts’ self-confessed “one-time” flirtation with performance enhancing drugs. It has to do more with the fact that B-Rob is 30 years old, in the prime of his career, and his trade value will never be any higher than it is right now. That, and he will most likely get out of Charm City very soon after he’s eligible for free agency. While they’re at it, they should buy out the rest of Jay Gibbons’ contract, which will cost them about $12 million – I can’t imagine anyone would offer anything of value for Gibbons, a totally one-dimensional player. If they can find takers for Jay Payton and Aubrey Huff, that’s fine as well. There’s not much difference between finishing in fifth place and finishing deep in fifth place. While a more casual fan may be likely to disagree with me, losing 100 – or more – games in a single season is not the worst thing in the world. The Detroit Tigers lost 119 games in the 2003 season and were the American League champs three years later. We can also look at the Marlins, who have been at both ends of the spectrum over the last decade or so – they won the World Series in 1997, lost 108 games the next season and rebuilt the team to win their second Fall Classic in 2003. This type of franchise model is a wise one, and Andy MacPhail is clearly the right man for the job by following it.
