1 About this Documentation 

1.1 Required Knowledge 

In order to successfully work with this manual, a profound knowledge of working with 

Microsoft Windows Terminal Services and Citrix XenApp Server farms is required. In addition, 

a basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server operating systems and software distribution 

solutions for operating systems and applications is helpful. 

Furthermore, the manual is aimed at people involved in installation, administration and 

troubleshooting of servers. visionapp AG assumes that you are qualified in server 

maintenance and have been trained to work with the installed software products. This 

documentation presupposes a certain knowledge of technical matters and technical terms. 

Understanding and using the information provided in this documentation will be easier with a 

good knowledge of the documentations listed below:

In case a problem cannot be solved with the information provided, please visit our website for 

additional troubleshooting information.

2 Introduction 

This guide will help you install visionapp Server Management, build a basic configuration and 

perform simple tasks. With this basic knowledge you build and organize software 

management according to the requirements of your business. 

3 Preparation for the installation 

3.1 Overview 

To prepare the installation, please follow these steps: 

> Make sure the required computers are available 

> Check detail prerequisites for the installation within the requirement guides on the product 

media. The requirement guide includes the operating system, the hardware, software, 

network and the configuration. 

> Check detail information for the installation of the visionapp Application Delivery 

Management Console (vADM console) within the vADM installation guide on the product 

media. 

3.2 Prepare required computers and roles 

To install visionapp Server Management Suite you need at least the following computers and 

roles: 

> Microsoft Active Directory 

> One file server for the ICM distribution points 

> One database server 

> One workstation for the administrator 

> Managed computers 

> Optional already installed MS WDS or MS ADS server 

For a detailed description please refer to the requirement guides on the product media. 


4 vADM Application Installation 

The next step in this process is installing the vADM console and configuring the database. The 

following procedure details the installation and connection to the SQL Database. 

Task Detailed Steps 

1. Run the 

vADM 

setup; 

leave every 

option on 

its default. 

In the intended workstation mount the vADM product CD-iso (or insert 

the CD into your CD drive). A dialog appears; select to continue in your 

prefered language; if the dialog does not appear run Setup.exe. 

Select Server Management Installation|visionapp Application 

Delivery Management Console 

Choose your installation language 



This selection is only about the dialogs during the installation. The 

application itself is multilingual. 

Next 

Accept the License Agreement. 

Next 



Install. 



2. Setup and 

configure a 

new vADM 

database 

by using 

the wizard. 

Finish after setup completed. 

Go to Start Menu|All Programs|visionapp Application Delievery 

Management Suite|visionapp Application Delivery Management 

Suite to start the console. 

Select OK to configure a new database connection. 



Select the radio button to Create a new database on an existing 

database server. 

Enter the name of the Database server. 

Enter the name of your vADM database. 



If you are logged into the console with the appropriate permissions, 

choose Integrated Windows Authentication. Otherwise, specify the User 

name and Password of a user with the appropriate permissions. 

Click Next. 

Name the vADM database environment. 

Enter the User name for the service account that will access the 

Database. 

Type in a Password of your choice 

Click Next. 



The progress window shows the database creation process. 

Click Finish after the database connection wizard successfully created the 

database. 



In the list of available environments select your database name and click 

Connect. 

Click Yes in the upcoming dialog and Cancel in the Log On dialog. 


5 Reconstructing Packages 

5.1 Objectives 

After completing these steps, you will be able to: 

> Reconstruct Packages using the Separate Package Manager

In the workstation run :\Installation\visionapp Installation 

Packages\visionapp Installation Packages.exe 

Click Next, accept the license agreement and click Next again 

Select the appropriate server roles and click Next 

Select an operating system of your choice and click Next 

Select your language and click Next 

Click Next 

Click Next 

Click Finish 

Mount the Operating System Installation CD/DVD. 

Install the visionapp Toolbox from the vADM-installation volume: 

Open Separated Package Manager from the Start Menu|All 

Programs|visionapp|visionapp ToolBox 2008 R2|Preparation 

Tools|Separated Package Manager 



Select Settings|Compile from the left pane 

Select in Compiler Options as Compiler C:\Program files\Wise 

Installation System\Wise32.exe and click Open. Click OK or Apply 

Select Reconstruct from the left pane. 

Click the Open Folder button, browse to C:\vBIP2008R2\Packages and 

click OK 

Double-click on the first package you want to reconstruct (e.g. 

061_APP_MSMQ30_W2K3_EN_01.00) 



3. Recompiling 

the 

packages 

In Source Dirctory click on the browse button and browse to the i386 

directory which is located on your Operating System Installation Disc and 

click OK 

Click Search. 

Once the Separated Package Manager has found the files, the flags on the 

left side turn green. It also may happen that a flag turns yellow. (For more 

information refer to the online-help) 

Click Reconstruct 

Click OK in the successfully reconstructed window. 

Repeat the above steps for the remaining packages. 

Select Compile from the left pane. 

Browse to the folder containing the reconstructed packages 

(C:\vBIP2008R2\Packages) and Click OK. 

Click Compile 

Check the vBIP2008R2 directory for Results 


6 Deploying a standard server using vADM 

(without Operating System Deployment) 



> Setup and configure an ICM package share 

> Setup and configure an ICM environment within vADM 

> Create Installation Scripts and Server Specifications 

You will need your vADM server and a target server with a basic Windows OS installed. 


1. Create a 

new folder

Create a new network share to be used for the ICM environment on the 

ICM Distribution Point and enter a name of your choice. 

Share the folder (right-click on the folder; select Sharing and Security… 

– Select Share this folder) 

Select Permissions and tick Full Control - allow for everyone 

Select the name of the newly created folder as share name 

Copy all relevant packages to the shared network folder. 

You can do this by opening the Windows Explorer and browsing to 

C:\vBIP2008R2\Packages. 

Click on the Search Button and type in 061*.exe. 

Check the results and copy them to the shared network folder on your 

Distribution Point. 

It is very important to copy the files. Do not move them! 

In the vADM console on your workstation go to Software Library topic 

and select the Software Deployment/Installation Control Manager 

node 

Select New|ICM Environment from the Menu bar 

Provide the appropriate values (name it; enter the directory containing the 

network share and enter a description) 



Click Next 

On the following page uncheck the Use system account box if you want 

to use another account and select e.g. the ICM service account (e.g. 

_icm_srv). Enter the password. 

Make sure that the account has appropriate rights and permissions with 

read access to the network shares. 

In the Import Configuration dialog tick the Installation Scripts box 

and browse to C:\vBIP2008R2\Installation Scripts 

Tick the Software Specifications box, browse to 

C:\vBIP2008R2\Software Specifications and click Finish 

Click Close 



4. Create the 

required 

Installation 

Scripts 

If you do not import the Installation Scripts and the Software 

Specifications automatically like it is described in the steps above, do this 

by referring to task 4 and 5 in this chapter. 

Select the Installation Scripts folder, right-click to show the context 

menu or click on the New button on the menu bar 

Select Installation Script and type in a name of your choice e.g. 

061_STD_PLATFORM_W2K3_EN as Name; click Next 

Add the package files and script commands as shown in the picture 

beneath 

In the following instruction we will always refer to the English version 

of Windows 2003. You are free to choose another operating system, 

but please consider it by naming the Installation Scripts and the 

Software Specifications appropriately. 

Create another Installation Script with the Name 

061_STD_CLEAN_ALL_X and the following packages and script 

commands: 

> 061_SYS_ADMINPASSWORD_ALL_X_01.00.EXE 

> 061_SYS_CLEANJOB_ALL_X_01.00.EXE 

> Restart 



5. Create the 

required 

Software 

Specification 

Select the Software Specifications folder, right-click to show the 

context menu or click on the New button on the menu bar 

Select Software Specification and type in the same name you used for 

the Installation Script in task 5 e.g. 061_STD_PLATFORM_W2K3_EN as 

name 

Add the newly created Installation Scripts to the Software Specification: 

061_STD_PLATFORM_W2K3_EN 

061_STD_CLEAN_ALL_X 

When creating Installation Scripts or Software Specifications always pay 

special Attention to the order of your packages or Installation Scripts! E.g. 

a package that installs a fix for an application will fail, if the application 

itself has not yet been installed. 


7 Configure and install a role for an already existing and 

installed Server/Client 



> Install server roles via vSM 

Complete these steps using the vADM server and a target system.

Write down the Machine’s MAC-Address 

Switch to the Infrastructure topic 

Select the Infrastructure folder, right-click in the upper left pane to show 

the context menu or click on the New button on the menu bar 

Select Folder and type in a name of your choice. 

Right-click on the newly created folder and select New|Farm from the 

context menu 

Type in a name of your choice and set the appropriate values 

Make sure the Parameter templates fit to your Server roles and that 

None is chosen in the drop-down-list next to Operating system 

deployment. 



On the New Farm dialog click OK 

On the menu bar click New and select Server/Client 

The Wizard appears. Type in the name of the target computer and click 

Next 

Click Finish 

Select the General Tab of the new server/client 

Type in the MAC Address of the template server/client as you have been 

writing it down and click on the floppy disc icon on the menu bar to save 

these settings. 

Make sure that the selected account has sufficient permissions to access 

the target server (for further information refer to the vADM online-help). 

Click on the Refresh button – the Select Network Adapter dialog 

appears. 



3. Assign the

Select Windows domain with Active Directory if appropriate.

Select the appropriate account you used above as User name and enter 

the password 

Click Next 

Click Next and Finish 

Go to the Installation Log tab to check the installation status 


8 Creating additional Distribution Points and secondary 

sites / setting up and defining Replication services 



> Setup and configure redundant ICM package shares 

> Setup and configure Replication Services 

Complete these steps using your vADM server.

Create a new network share being used for the ICM environment on the 

ICM Distribution Point and name it appropriately.

In the vADM console select Software Library, Software Deployment, 

Installation Control Manager, the network share you created in task 1 

of chapter 5, Primary Site and click the Add Button on the Distribution 

Points tab 

Type in the name of the newly created share 

\\Distribution Point\network folder as Network share and click Finish 

Remain on Primary Site. On the Distribution Points tab click Install 

Service 

Type in the name of your Distribution Point as server name and click Next 

Click Next 



Click Finish 

Click on Refresh to check for the service running properly 

Select the redundant Distribution Point and assign the newly created 

Replication Service 

Stop and Start the Service and check for results in the Replication 

status row.

Right-click on the Primary Site node and select New|Site 

Type in a name of your choice as name 

On the Distribution Points tab click Add and type in the name of the 

newly created share as a network share 

(\\Distribution Point\network share) 

Click Finish 

It is quite important to select the Site-Replication node for installing the 

Replication Service otherwise it is not possible for this service to serve as 

Inter-Site-Replication service 

Select the Site-Replication node 

On the Distribution Points tab select Install Service and install another 

Replication Service as described in task 3 

Select the Distribution Point of the newly created Site and assign the 

newly created Replication Service 

Stop and Start the Service and check for Results in the Replication 

status row (it may take some time for the results to appear). 


9 Setting up an WDS site; capturing and deploying a 

standard server including OS deployment 



> Setup and configure a WDS site 

> Capture, configure and deploy WDS images using the vADM console 

Complete these steps using the vADM server and a target machine. 


1. Setup a

Before starting with task 1, please make sure that the Windows 

Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) is installed on your WDS-Server and 

that the WDS-Server is already prepared and configured. For further 

information refer to the vSM2008R2-Installation-Guide. 

Switch to Software Library/Operating System Deployment 

Right-click on Microsoft Windows Deployment Services and select 

New|WDS site from the context menu. 

Type in the WDS server name, select an appropriate User name and 

confirm it with the password e.g. as shown in the picture beneath. Click 

Next. 

Type in a WDS site name and click Finish

Please refer to the vSM2008R2-Installation-Guide for the visionappspecified 

configuration of the WinPE-Bootimage. 

Start the template server/client. 

Write down the machine’s MAC-Address 

Restart the machine again and enter the BIOS 

Change the Boot Options to set Network adapter first on the list. 


Right-click on the top-level-folder in the left pane and select New|Farm 

from the context menu 

Type in a name for the Template-Farm. 

Make sure that all settings fit to your system, select Microsoft Windows 

Deployment Services in the drop-down-list next to Operating system 

deployment and click OK 


The Wizard appears. Type in the name of the template server/client in 

Enter a name for the new server/client and click Next 

Click Finish 

Select the General Tab of the new server 

Type in the MAC Address of the template server/client and click on the 

floppy disc icon on the menu bar to save these settings 

Make sure that the selected User account has sufficient rights and 

permissions to access the template-server. You can change the User 

account on the General tab of the Server-Farm. 

Click on the Refresh button – the Select Network adapter dialog 

appears 

Select the Network card; click OK 

Switch to the Capture Image sub tab on the WDS Tab 

Select the appropriate WDS-Site you created in task 1 from the dropdown-list 

next to Site name 

Type in an Image name. 

Select the appropriate Operating system. 

Select Use another user from the drop-down-list next to Login 

account 



Type in the user name e.g. administrator and the password (Leave the 

password empty, if you have selected Windows 2003 as Operating system 

version) 

Save your settings 

Before starting the Image-capturing of a Windows 2003 system you have 

to change some Settings on your template-server. For further Information 

refer to the vSM2008R2-Installation-Guide 

Start capturing the image by clicking on the Capture Image button 

You may monitor the capturing process in the job status frame on the 

bottom of the window by clicking on the Refresh button or just switch to 

the console of the template server. 



5. Create a 

sysprep 

configuration 

Switch to Software Library and right-click on the Sysprep Store folder. 

Select New|Sysprep configuration from the context menu 

Type in a name of your choice and click OK. 

From the list of available parameters add Language and LanguageGroup to 

Assigned parameters. They can be found under RegionalSettings. 

Uncheck the Use as variable box and type 1031 as value for Language 

and 1 as value for Language group. 



6. Create a 

new

Sysprep- 

Set 

Following three steps apply only to W2K3 and XP setups: 

Add [GuiUnattended] - Autologon to Assigned parameters, uncheck 

the use as variable box and enter Yes 

Add [GuiRuOnce] – RunOnceEntry1 to Assigned parameters, 

uncheck the use as variable box and enter C:\vPEA\vPEA.exe OS 

Also add the following parameters: 

> Identification\DomainAdmin 

> Identification\DomainAdminPassword 

> Identification\JoinDomain 

> MS_TCPIP parameters\Enable Security 

> params.TCPIP.Adapter1\DefaultGateway 

> params.TCPIP.Adapter1\DHCP 

> params.TCPIP.Adapter1\DNSDomain 

> params.TCPIP.Adapter1\DNSServerSearchOrder 

> params.TCPIP.Adapter1\IPAddress 

> params.TCPIP.Adapter1\NetBiosOptions 

> params.TCPIP.Adapter1\SubnetMask 

> params.Adapter1\NetcardAddress 

Save the settings 

Right-click on the Microsoft Windows Deployment Services\ the 

appropriate WDS-Site (e.g. WDS-Site01)\Image Sysprep Sets folder. 

Select New|Image Sysprep Set from the context menu. 

Type in a name of your choice as Name 

Select an image from the drop-down-menu as Assigned Image and the 

appropriate sysprep configuration as Assigned Sysprep Configuration. 

Make sure that the Encrypted boxes next to the password values are 

checked.

> NetBIOSOptions – Enables NetBIOS over TCP/IP 

> SubnetMask – 255.255.255.0 

> LanguageGroup – 1 

> Language – 1031 

> OEMSkipEula – Yes 

> Fullname - visionapp AG 

> OrgName - visionapp AG 

> Product-Key – your product key! 

Save the settings. 

Prepare and start a new target server/client. The target server/client can 

be physical or virtual. 

Restart the server/client and write down the Machine’s MAC-Address. 

Restart the machine again and enter the BIOS. 

Change the Boot Options to set the Network adapter first. 


Right-click on the top-level-folder and select New|Farm from the 

context menu 

Enter a name for the farm. 

Choose Microsoft Windows Deployment Services and the appropriate 



settings from the drop down list for OS Deployment, click Ok 


The Wizard appears. Type in the name of the target server/client and 

click Next 

Click Finish 

Select the General Tab of the new server 

Type in the MAC Address, the final IP Address and the Subnet mask. Click 

on the floppy disc icon on the menu bar to save these settings 

Deploying with DHCP is supported on W2K3 and XP only. If you want to 

deploy with DHCP enabled, it is not necessary to provide the IP-Address 

and the Subnet mask. 

Select the WDS tab 

Select the appropriate WDS-Site from the drop-down-list next to Site 

name 

Select the appropriate Image Sysprep set from the drop-down-list. 

Save the settings 

Switch to the ICM tab and select the Software Specification from the 

ICM environment you prviously created e.g. 

061_STD_PLATFORM_W2K3_EN from the ICM_ENV_WS environment 

Switch back to the WDS tab, click the Start button to initialize the 

deployment 

Monitor the installation 


10 Fully automated setup of an entire Citrix Presentation 

Server Farm 



> Run an fully automated installation and configuration of a Citrix Presentation Server Farm 



1. Create a 

new ICM 

environment 

Create a new network share being used for the ICM environment on your 

Distribution Point 

Share the folder 


Set full control for everyone as share rights 

Reconstruct all relevant Packages (refer chapter 4 “Reconstructing 

Packages” for details. Make sure you select the Citrix Presentation Server 

and the appropriate Citrix Type while running the visionapp Installation 

Packages.exe) 

Copy the packages to the shared network folder you created in the first 

step 

You can do this by opening the Windows Explorer and browsing to 

C:\vBIP2008R2\Packages 

Click on the Search Button and type in 061*.exe 

Check the results and copy them to the shared network folder on your 

Distribution Point (it is very important to copy the files. Do not move 

them.) 

Switch to Software-Library 

Right-click on the Installation Control Manager folder and select 

New|ICM Environment from the context menu 

Fill in the values as shown in the figure below. Check the Import 

packages and folders box. 



2. Import the 

required

Scripts 

Click Next 

On the following page uncheck the Use system account box, select the 

ICM service account and enter the appropriate password. Make sure 

that the account has sufficient rights and permissions with read access to 

the network shares. 

In the Import configuration window tick the Installation Scripts box and 

browse to C:\vBIO2008R2\Installation Scripts 

Tick the Software Specification box and browse to 

C:\vBIP2008R2\Software Specifications 

Click Finish 

If you do not import the Installation Scripts and the Software 

Specification automatically like it is described in the steps above, do this 

by referring to task 2 and 3. 

Right-click on the Installation Scripts folder and select 

New|Installation Script 

Click on Import and browse to the following import file: 

061_CTX_APPLICATION_ALL_X.ini 

Click OK 

Repeat these steps for the following Installation Scripts: 

> 061_CTX_CLEAN_ALL_X 

061_CTX_PLATFORM_CPS45_W2K3_EN

Right-click on the Software Specifications folder and select 

New|Software Specification 

Click on Import and browse to the following import file: 

061_CTX_PLATFORM_CPS45_W2K3_EN.ini 

Click Next 

Start a new target server/client 

Restart the machine and ensure that the target machine will boot from the 

network. 

Switch to Infrastructure 

Right-click on the top-level-folder and select New|Farm from the context 

menu 

Name the Farm and select the following Server roles and Parameter 

templates: 

> Microsoft Terminal Server / Microsoft Windows Server 2003 

> Citrix Presentation Server / Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 

Click OK 

Right-click on the newly created Farm and select New|Computer folder 


Type in a name of your choice as name for the Computer folder and click 

OK. 

Repeat this step for the second Computer folder 



Right-click on the first Computer folder and select New|Server/Client 


Select Enter a range… 

Type in the name of the first Citrix Presentation target server as the From 

value and the name of the last target server as To value. The servers will 

be numbered consecutively. 

The server name must end in a number. 

Click Next and Finish 

Repeat this step for for the second Computer folder. 

Select the Citrix Presentation Server Farm and provide the MAC 

address for the first target server on the General tab 

Select the Citrix Presentation Server Farm and switch to the ICM tab 

and assign the new ICM environment and the new Server Specification to 

all servers 

Switch to the WDS tab and assign the appropriate WDS-Site and the 

existing Image Sysprep Set to all servers. 

Switch to the Settings tab, select the Citrix tab 



Configure the following options: 

> Presentation Server Administration\Presentation Server 

Administrators: CitrixAdmins (Note: This group has to be prepared 

and users need to be added.) 

> Citrix License Server\License Server Name: your license server 

name 

> Datastore database creation account\User account to create 

the datastore: SQL account with sa rights on the SQL server 

> Datastore database creation account\Password to create the 

datastore: Password of the above account 

You may also change some of the already existing values or add some 

options and configurations, but you should leave the other parameters on 

their default values unless you’re confident about these settings. 

Select the first computer folder and select the Settings\Citrix tab 

Switch to the Expert Mode by clicking the button in the toolbar 

Repeat this step for the second server folder 

Select the target server and switch to the WDS tab 

Start the installation

Start the Queue Manager Server/Client. 

Write down the Machine’s MAC-Address. 

Restart the machine and enter the BIOS. 

Change the Boot Options to Network adapter first. 

Switch to the Infrastructure topic. 

Right-click on the top-level--folder and select New|Farm from the context 

menu. 

Type in a name of your choice for the Management Server. 

Select visionapp Queue Director Service and visionapp Queue 

Listening Service as Server roles. Select Microsoft Windows Deployment 

Service from the drop-down-list next to Operating system deployment 

and click Next. 

On the menu bar click New and select Server/Client. 

The Wizard appears. Type in the name of the target server/client in Enter 

a name for the new server/client and click Next. 

Select visionapp Queue Director Service as Role and click Finish. 

Select the General Tab of the new server. 

Type in the MAC Address and click on the floppy disc icon on the menu 

bar to save these settings. 

Select the WDS tab. 

Select the appropriateWDS-Site from the drop-down-list next to Site 

name. 

Select the appropriate Image-Sysprep-Set from the drop-down-list. 

Save the settings.

Switch to the ICM tab and select the appropriate Software Specification 

from the first created ICM environment. Switch back to the WDS tab, click 

the Start button to start the deployment. 

Wait for the installation to finish before continuing with task 3. 

From the menu bar select Administration|visionapp Queue Agent 

Remote Installation. 

Select the Citrix Presentation target server as Computer name, select 

the appropriate user name as account and verify it with the password. 

Click Next 

Click Finish 

You can also install the visionapp Queue Listener Service role by checking 

the appropriate box during the creation of the new computer. 

Switch to the Inventory tab of the target server. 

Click on Run inventory scan. 

Check for Results.

Select the most recent job (if you performed more than one analysis) from 

the list of server jobs and click OK. 



Switch between Show all and Show only different, check if all changes

Complete these steps using the vADM server.

Use the Select button to enter the ICM Service account as user then 

verify it with the password. Make sure that the account has sufficient 

rights and permissions with read access to the network shares.

Select the appropriate Software Specification within the first stage ICM 

environment 

On the General tab click on Create Release 

Set all version numbers to 1.0.0 (By either choosing Major as Version 

mode or just manually adjust the numbers). 



5. Transfer

On the General tab of the Software Specification click on Transfer

From the list of available environments select the ICM environment you
