HARP<br />

Gretchen Brumwell is the adjunct instructor <strong>of</strong> harp at the University <strong>of</strong> Northern Iowa. She serves as principal<br />

harpist <strong>of</strong> Orchestra Iowa and is an active performer throughout Iowa. As a soloist, she <strong>has</strong> appeared with Orchestra<br />

Iowa, the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony, the Ottumwa Symphony, the Oskaloosa Symphony, the Iowa City<br />

Community String Orchestra, and the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra.<br />

VIOLA<br />

Julia Bullard teaches viola, string pedagogy, and string methods and techniques at the University <strong>of</strong> Northern<br />

Iowa. Bullard is the Associate Director for Graduate Studies in the School <strong>of</strong> music. From 2003-2010, Bullard<br />

also served as Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>UNI</strong> Suzuki School. She is an active solo, chamber and orchestral performer<br />

both in the US and abroad. She <strong>has</strong> also presented master classes at Herzen Pedagogical Institute in St.<br />

Petersburg, Russia; the University <strong>of</strong> Costa Rica in San José, Costa Rica; and the State University <strong>of</strong> New York at Fredonia. Bullard <strong>has</strong> served<br />

on the board <strong>of</strong> the Iowa Viola Society and as President <strong>of</strong> the Iowa String Teachers’ Association.Bullard received the D.M.A. degree <strong>from</strong><br />

the University <strong>of</strong> Georgia, where she was the Director <strong>of</strong> the Pre-College String Program. She received her M.M. (string pedagogy and music<br />

history) and B.M. (performance) degrees <strong>from</strong> Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.<br />

CELLO Cellist Jonathan Chenoweth received his training at the Oberlin Conservatory and the State University <strong>of</strong> New<br />

York at Stony Brook. Before coming to <strong>UNI</strong> in 1991, he performed as a member <strong>of</strong> several pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

ensembles including the Dakota Quartet, the Soviet Emigre Chamber Orchestra , the Richmond (VA) Symphony,<br />

and the contemporary music group Bis. He <strong>has</strong> been a soloist at festivals in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Vermont. He <strong>has</strong><br />

taught at universities in Pennsylvania, Missouri, and South Dakota.<br />

VIOLIN<br />

CONDUCTOR<br />

Rebecca Burkhardt joined the <strong>UNI</strong> faculty as Director <strong>of</strong> Orchestral Activities in 1988.<br />

Besides her duties as Music Director <strong>of</strong> the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra she is<br />

Music Director for the <strong>UNI</strong> Opera Theatre. From Dialogue <strong>of</strong> the Carmelites and<br />

Madame Butterfly to Fiddler on the Ro<strong>of</strong> and HAIR, her theater performances<br />

encompass the gamut <strong>of</strong> music-drama and musical comedy. She <strong>has</strong> appeared as guest conductor <strong>of</strong> the Moscow Chamber Orchestra,<br />

Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, Opera Illinois and as Music Director <strong>of</strong> the Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra and the Dubuque<br />

Youth Symphony. Most recent engagements include Conservatory Orchestra at Aunlay-sous-Bois (France) and Florida Gulf Coast University<br />

orchestras. She performed as guest clinician and conductor for the Iowa All-State Orchestra and conducted that same ensemble at the 2005<br />

National Governor's Convention in Des Moines. As conductor <strong>of</strong> the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, she <strong>has</strong> toured Russia, Costa Rica<br />

and New York City. A native <strong>of</strong> Texas, Dr. Burkhardt earned a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music degree in Horn Performance <strong>from</strong> Southwestern University<br />

(TX), a Master <strong>of</strong> Music Education degree <strong>from</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> North Texas, and her Ph. D. at the University <strong>of</strong> Texas, Austin.<br />

VIOLIN<br />

In addition to her work at <strong>UNI</strong>, Ms. Brumwell serves as harp instructor at Coe College and the Orchestra Iowa School, where she directs the<br />

Advanced Harp Ensemble. She received her M.M. in harp performance <strong>from</strong> Rice University. While at Rice, she was a regular substitute<br />

with the Houston Symphony and the Houston Ballet Orchestra. Her teachers include Paula Page, Mary Bircher, and the legendary Alice<br />

Chalifoux.<br />

DOUBLE BASS<br />

A native <strong>of</strong> Waterloo, Iowa, Hunter Capoccioni <strong>has</strong> performed concerts throughout<br />

the United States, Europe, and Russia. At age sixteen, Mr. Capoccioni won the Lucy P.<br />

Weed String Competition in Yankton, South Dakota, and the same year was chosen as<br />

a finalist for the American String Teachers Association Competition in Kansas City. Mr. Capoccioni graduated with a bachelor and masters in<br />

music performance <strong>from</strong> Rice University where he studied with Paul Ellison. Other teachers include Diana Gannett, Gary Karr, and Fred<br />

Rees. Mr. Capoccioni <strong>has</strong> held positions as the principal bassist <strong>of</strong> the Norrlands Opera Orchestra in Umeå, Sweden, and the Norwegian<br />

Opera Orchestra in Oslo, Norway. Mr. Capoccioni is currently an adjunct instructor <strong>of</strong> double bass at the University <strong>of</strong> Northern Iowa and<br />

the Artistic Director <strong>of</strong> the Cedar Valley Chamber Music Festival which is in its third season.<br />

Clinician: Jonathan Chenoweth<br />

At <strong>UNI</strong>, Dr. Chenoweth is head <strong>of</strong> the String Division and coordinator <strong>of</strong> chamber music activities.<br />

Clinician: Therese Fetter<br />

Therese Fetter, a native <strong>of</strong> Dublin, Ireland, began her violin studies at the Irish College <strong>of</strong> Music. She received<br />

a Master <strong>of</strong> Music degree in Violin Performance <strong>from</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Northern Iowa. She <strong>has</strong> had an<br />

extensive career as an orchestral performer in the US and abroad, most <strong>recently</strong> as concertmaster <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra.<br />

Fetter joined the faculty <strong>of</strong> the <strong>UNI</strong> Suzuki School in 1978 and served as Director <strong>from</strong> 1986-2000. Under her leadership the <strong>UNI</strong> Suzuki<br />

School initiated two youth orchestras, created an outreach and performance group <strong>of</strong> advanced violinists (called "Fiddlesticks"), introduced<br />

a comprehensive theory curriculum, and added flute and clarinet programs. In 1997, in collaboration with Center City Arts, she helped<br />

establish "Music Works," a program in Waterloo that provides subsidized violin lessons for inner-city children.<br />

Clinician: Frederick Halgedahl<br />

Violinist Frederick Halgedahl <strong>has</strong> taught at the University <strong>of</strong> Northern Iowa since 1986, when he settled in the<br />

region after a successful early career in symphony orchestras (including the National Symphony, the<br />

Stattsorchester Hamburg and the North German Radio Symphony – N.D.R.) ultimately led to faculty positions<br />

at Western Washington University and the University <strong>of</strong> Oklahoma.<br />

In addition to an active involvement in Iowa orchestras (at one time or another serving as concertmaster <strong>of</strong> the Waterloo-Cedar Falls,<br />

Cedar Rapids, and Des Moines Symphony Orchestras) and chamber music (including positions in the International Trio, the <strong>UNI</strong> Faculty<br />

String Quartet and the creation <strong>of</strong> the Halgedahl-Botkin Duo), Halgedahl’s varied interests have led to published research with physics<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor Roger Hanson, and to seminars on British and American poetry, both at <strong>UNI</strong> and at the University’s sister institution in Russia, the<br />

Russian State Pedagogical Institute, in St. Petersburg.<br />
