1 Women Voters League head
warns of disenfranchisement
"There IS every chance that a
significant number of New
Jersey voters may be disenfranchised
in the June 8
Primary Election", stated
Dorothy Powers, president of
the League of Women Voters of
New Jersey, in a recent press
release, "because of an 111conceived;difflcult-tolmplement,
and poorly
publicized law."
The Party Declaration Law
requires every registered voter
who has ever voted in a
Primary Election to declare in
writing to his County Board of
Elections his intention to vote in
the opposite party ballot within
SO days before the election if he
desires to switch party affiliation
this year. As the law is
worded, the deadline for
written declaration of-intent is
April 19, 1976. If the voter Is
unsure of previous participation
in a Primary, he may
obtain that information from
EI of
party
ined fr
or the County
Board of Elections, provided
that the statement is postmarked
by April 19.
Stainton'« West
was first introduced in the
Legislature. Many questions
have been raised since its
passage by citizen interest
groups and election officials
alike, yet as of now no reliable
answers have been given. The
League expressed grave doubts
about the possibility of the
public being adequately informed
of the provisions of the
law before the deadline. It
foresaw potential chaos at the
polls on June 8 and at national
party conventions when New
Jersey delegates may be
contested. It saw probable
inequities and inaccuracies in
application of the law. "The
League is considering seeking
an injunction to delay the effective
date of the. Party
Declaration Law until after the
June Primary Election to
permit time for an organized
implementation of its
provisions," said Mrs. Powers.
Giant plea:
Edward J. MacClane, of 110
Bay av. came-to Wednesday's
City Commission meeting with
a new gripe this week - he to
concerned about a hole in the
bulkhead across the street from
his home.
For weeks MacClane, an
unsuccessful dty commission
candidate last year, has been
trying to get "the City to
resurface the road shoulders in
Us block, but to no. avail since
city officials believe there are
other road shoulders in the city
that need attention first.
Now MacClane is concerned
. that the bay will come spilling
over Bay av. during a storm
tide. "I wouldn't want Chet
(Commissioner Chester J.
Wimberg) to come down here
with some caskets." MacClane
was apparently making
reference to the use of concrete
burial vaults recently to act as
a breakwater at the Great Egg
Harbor Inlet beaches.
City Engineer Joseph F.
Hyland whose department has
been ordered to look into the
situation, said the city will soon
be receiving bulkheading
, material to repair damaged
city bulkheads if, indeed, the
bulkhead MacClane refers to is
the city's responsibility.
