The Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger
PAGE 2 — SECTION TWO
Spring and politics
Spring has sprung and the political
season is in full swing-with the
Democrats, introducing some interesting
new faces and' the
Republicans involved in a power
struggle to see who will oppose
Congressman William J. Hughes in
November.
- State Assembleyman James R.
Hurley and FVed Coldren, legislative
aid to former Congressman Charles W.
Sandman, are vying for the
Republican nod to take on Hughes. -
There are conflicting reports that
the Hurley-Coldren confrontation is
spitting the party to such a degree that
Hughes will be virtually assured of
victory in November. Another school
of thought is that the GOP will actually
be strengthened by the two candidates
•striving for the nomination. .
-" It is certain that Hughes is watching
Hurley and Coldren closely. He would
probably favor a race against Coldren
because he could link the former aide
to Sandman, who he handily defeated
THURSDAY, APRIL 8, 197*
in 1974. Hurley is a popular Assemblyman
with a good legislative record
and a winning personality. • .
~ At the County level Freeholder Roy
Gillian faces a November battle with a
political newcomer for the Democrats,
Tun Tucker of south Ocean City.
Tucker faces a tough time trying to
unseat Gillian. He is virtually
unknown in the county and even here
in Ocean City. City Commissioner
Chester J. Wimberg would have been a
more formidible candidate for. the
Democrats, but he ruled himself out of
4he race early. Wimberg ran unsuccessfully
for freeholder in 1974.
Gillian and whoever gets the GOP
nomination for Congress will have the
support of Ocean City's Republican
organization. Local GOP leaders say
they will work to defeat Hughes,
They y insist the g an wont do
as well ll here h thi this year as he did in 1974.
But once again that's just speculation,
and that is what the Spring political
season is all about.
An unfair indictment
John W. Brown, a member of the
board of directors of the Association
for Community Affairs (ACA), is out to
do the taxpayersof this city a favor. Of
at least that's apparently what he
thinks. ^ ^
Recently Brown has made inquiries
about city expenditures for the Ocean
•City Humane Society, and this week in
the ACA newsletter it was noted that
Brown 'is doing investigative work on
the Humane Society to help lower our
city budget."
Brown T s investigative work has
apparently coincided with an article
appearing in an area daily new
last week that has Humane
officers and volunteers furious.
- Last year the Humane Society spent
$27,298 for improvements,
replacements, repairs, wages, brash
collection, exterminators,
veterinarian medicine, publicity and
maintenance of the shelter. AH of that
money was raised by-volunteers.
The taxpayers 'of - Ocean City last
year spent approximately $4000 for the
feeding of dogs and«ats brought to the
shelter. The animals were either lost
or unwanted and most of them
belonged to taxpayers and-or residents
of this city. That's a seemingly small
price to pay for such a necessary city
service. "
The dog food was purchased from
Cody's general store in Marmora. A IS
percent charge is added to the store
cost for profit and storage of the food.
The Humane Society simply doesnt
Those 'pop' machines
While crocuses, daffodils, and tulips
are popping up with the Spring
weather in nearby communities,
Ocean City is realizing its annual crop
There is something that off ends the
No one seems to like the machines
(except those who are making money
from them) but little has been done to
.control their spread throughout the
dty. ^ ^
There is little the dty can do to
within the limits of current zoning
laws. About the only thing the commissioners
can do is require licenses
for vending machines in an effort to
provide some regulation.
Still the task of enforcement will be
difficult and it is hard to say whether
the cost of the licenses will effectively
halt the practice of intrfainwg outdoor
soda machines. In fact, it might have a
determintal effect on other vendors in
the dty who don't destroy the
aesthetics of the community.
The answer then is neighborhood
pride. Neighbors offended by the
machines should get together and ask
those who have them to either move
them to concealed locations or get rid
of them. Friendly persuasion is an art
