Leopold GODOWSKY
22 Chopin Studies
Ivan Ilić: piano
release date: June 12, 2012
GODOWSKY: 22 Chopin Studies for the Left Hand Alone
American pianist Ivan Ilić has recorded his second CD for French label Paraty, entitled 22
Chopin Studies by Leopold Godowsky. Godowsky was a celebrity in his day: Artur Rubinstein
said that “it would take him 500 years” to acquire Godowsky’s technique. But following
Godowsky’s death in 1938, his compositions were largely ignored until the year 2000, when
super-virtuoso pianists such as Marc-André Hamelin and Boris Berezovsky began to record
and perform his works in concert. Ivan Ilić is the latest pianist to rise to the formidable
challenge. His album focuses on the 22 Studies for the left hand alone, considered among the
most difficult pieces ever written for the instrument.
François COUPERIN
Portrait d’Iris: Suites for Viola da Gamba
Emmanuelle Guigues, Sylvia Abramowicz: viola da gambas/Rémi Cassaigne: theorbo, baroque
guitar/Bruno Procopio: harpsichord
COUPERIN: Pièces de violes avec la basse chifrée par Mr. F.C.—1 st & 2 nd Suites • Pièces de
clavecin (sel.)
Paraty Records offers homage to François Couperin on this disc, which includes two suites for
viola da gamba and basso continuo, the fourteenth Royal Concert, and several works for solo
harpsichord. Through this portrait, the four musicians explore the multifaceted music of the
beloved composer.
Joaquín TURINA
Solo Guitar Works
Sébastien Llinares: guitar
J. TURINA: Rafaga • Hommage a Tarrega: Garrotin & Soleares • Fandanguillo • Sevillana •
Sonata • Poema en Forma de Canciones (exc.) • La Aldea Duerme from Miniaturas • José Luis
TURINA: Copla de Cante Jondo
Joaquín Turina belongs to a category of musicians, too few in number, who have left a mark
on the guitar repertoire. Instead of treating the instrument with disdain, he wrote for it with a
certain assiduity. Just as Kodaly was the first to use the open strings of the cello to great effect,
Turina rediscovered those of the guitar. Born in Toulouse in 1978, Sébastien Llinares joined
Cristian Marcia’s class at the Conservatoire Frédéric Chopin in Paris. In 2007–2008, he attracted
attention during the International Academy of Music of Cagliary, where he won a scholarship
given by the Zaleski Foundation.
