The cycle, consisting of 24 songs, is the manifesto of a lover’s grief, written by a man during the last year of his life. Håvard Stensvold, an opera singer educated in Copenhagen, spent many years creating a singable translation of this great work; the idea arose from the desire to remove some of the distance between performer and listener. Pianist Tor Espen Aspaas assists superbly as fellow traveler in this visualization of Schubert’s winter landscape. The concertos for oboe and strings Wq 164 & 165 are transcriptions of harpsichord concertos Bach made in Berlin in 1765; they were very probably performed at a private concert at the court of Frederick the Great, which counted a number of excellent oboists including Joachim Wilhelm Dobbert and Johann Christina Jacobi. Despite his mixed views on religion, Tchaikovsky was genuinely interested in the ceremony of orthodox service and ideas of Christianity. History has demonstrated that Tchaikovsky’s Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom is able to exist as both music for divine service and a piece performed in concert.
