sophisticated computer software so that the learners can
practice and repeat procedures as often as necessary
in order to correct mistakes and fine-tune skills. the
computerized mannequins (also called virtual patients)
are able to talk to the physician or student nurse,
podiatrist, or physical or occupational therapist about the
symptoms being experienced, and even react to the drugs
prescribed to them.
“it was an odd scenario, controlled, but real to life too,” said
marc martinez, md, emergency medicine in southern california.
“you get to see yourself in action when the simulation is
reviewed by video debriefing. it was helpful because the
instructors pointed out things that i would not have thought of
before, like communication and shared mental models.”
in the seminar for sutter health doctors, responses
from the virtual patients enabled the physicians to make
adjustments to his or her diagnosis based on data from the
simulation. doctors, with the aid of smu faculty simulation
experts, practiced hands-on ultrasound guided central- line
placement, aseptic technique of central-line placement,
and recognition and management of sepsis.
