If Ye Love Me
John 14:15-17a
If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father,
and he shall give you another comforter, that he may ‘bide with
you forever, e’en the spirit of truth.

Tribulationem et dolorem inveni,

O Domine, libera animam meam.

conspectu tuo, Domine; juxta eloquium
tuum da mihi intellectum.
Intret postulatio mea in conspectu tuo;
secundum eloquium tuum eripe me.
Eructabunt labia mea hymnum, cum
docueris me justificationes tuas.
Pronuntiabit lingua mea eloquium
tuum, quia omnia mandata tua
aequitas.
Fiat manus tua ut salvet me,
quoniam mandata tua elegi.
Concupivi salutare tuum, Domine,
et lex tua meditatio mea est.
Vivet anima mea, et laudabit te,
et judicia tua adjuvabunt me.
Erravi sicut ovis quae periit: quaere
servum tuum, quia mandata tua
non sum oblitus.

Incipit lamentatio Ieremiae prophetae.

The sorrows of death have
compassed me: and the perils of
hell have found me.
I met with trouble and sorrow:
And I called upon the name of the
Lord. O Lord, deliver my soul.
Let my complaint come before
thee, O Lord: give me understanding,
according to thy word.
Let my supplication come before thee:
deliver me, according to thy word.
My lips shall speak of thy praise: when
thou hast taught me thy statutes.
Yea, my tongue shall sing of thy
word: for all thy commandments
are righteous.
Let thine hand help me: for I have
chosen thy commandments.
I have longed for thy saving health,
O Lord: and in thy law is my delight.
O let my soul live, and it shall
praise thee: and thy judgements
shall help me.
I have gone astray like a sheep that
is lost: O seek thy servant, for I do
not forget thy commandments.
Here begin the lamentation of
Jeremiah the prophet.
ALEPH. Quomodo sedet sola civitas
plena populo! Facta est quasi vidua
domina gentium; princeps
provinciarum facta est sub tributo.
BETH. Plorans ploravit in nocte, et
lacrimæ ejus in maxillis ejus: non est
qui consoletur eam, ex omnibus caris
ejus; omnes amici ejus spreverunt
eam, et facti sunt ei inimici.
Ierusalem, convertere ad
Dominum Deum tuum.
O bone Jesu

Illumina oculos meos, ne unquam
obdormiam in morte, nequando
dicat inimicus: prevalui adversus
eum. O Adonai.
In manus tuas Domine commendo
spiritum meum: redemisti me
Domine Deus veritatis. O Messias.
Locutus sum in lingua mea: notum
fac mihi finem meum. O agios.
Et numerum dierum meorum quis
est, ut sciam quid desit mihi.
O Heloi.
Dirupisti Domine vincula mea: tibi
sacrificabo hostiam laudis, et nomen
Domini invocabo. O Emmanuel.
Periit fuga a me, et non est qui
requirat animam meam. O Christe.
Clamavi ad te Domine, dixi: tu es
spes mea, portio mea in terra
viventium. O rex noster.
Fac mecum signum bonum, ut videant
qui oderunt me, et confundantur:
quoniam tu Domine adjuvisti et
consolatus es me. O Rabbi.
Signatum est super nos lumen vultus
tui Domine: dedisti laetitiam in
corde meo. Amen.
ALEPH. How lonely sits the city
that was full of people! How like
a widow has she become, she that
was great among the nations! She
that was a princess among the cities
has become a vassal.
BETH. She weeps bitterly in the
night, tears on her cheeks; among
all her lovers she has none to comfort
her; all her friends have dealt
treacherously with her, they have
become her enemies.
Jerusalem, return to the
Lord thy God.
O good Jesus. Give light to my eyes,
or I will sleep in death, and my
enemy will say, ‘I have overcome
him.’ O Lord.
Into your hands I commit my
spirit: deliver me, Lord God of
truth. O Messiah.
I have spoken: Lord, make me
know my end. O Holy One.
And what is the number of my
days: that I may know what is
lacking in me. O my God.
You have broken my bonds: I will offer
you the sacrifice of praise and call on
the name of our Lord. O Emmanuel.
I have no refuge; no one cares for
my life. O Christ.
I have cried to you, O Lord, I have
said, ‘You are my hope, my portion
in the land of the living.’ O our King.
Give me a sign of your goodness, that
my enemies may see it and be put to
shame, for you, Lord, have helped me
and comforted me. O teacher.
You have let the light of your face
shine on us: you have filled my
heart with joy. Amen.
