Welcome! We are pleased to present our Spring offerings in Early Music, and look forward to an edifying and spiritually moving series of concerts and liturgical presentations as we discover and re-discover some of Western Art music’s most treasured creations. This year, we present Bach’s monumental St. Matthew Passion on Palm Sunday, the performance serving as the axis of symmetry to a season culminating in our wonderful Monday series Bach at One, and beginning with a new series of concerts – TENEbrae, created and presented in collaboration with TENET. Throughout this new series of TENEbrae we have the great fortune to delve into a rich catalogue of compositional interpretations focusing on the ancient sacred texts for Holy Week. It is fitting to crown this series with J. S. Bach’s epic Matthäus-Passion, a work that sums up in its encyclopedic manner the entirety of compositional developments that preceded it, from the rich tapestry of stile antico polyphony through the specific national styles of the baroque. From the high renaissance outpourings of Victoria and Tallis, through the chromatically advanced Italian Gesualdo, to the French masters Charpentier and Couperin, and (most relevant to Bach) the Danish-German master Dietrich Buxtehude, we discover an incredibly varied treatment of Passiontide, evoking some of Western music’s most personal, intensely devotional, pietistic and heart-wrenching body of repertoire. On March 18th, we return to Bach at One, our weekly liturgical presentation of the Cantatas of J.S. Bach. Getting the season off to an unforgettable start, Mark Morris will conduct two of Bach’s incredibly beautiful motets, Jesu, meine Freude and Fürchte dich nicht. Pipes at One and Concerts at One begin their Spring seasons in early February, and Compline continues through the year each Sunday night with improvised polyphony and new compositions at St. Paul’s Chapel. Looking forward, in late April Trinity Wall Street celebrates the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps by presenting the entirety of Stravinsky’s sacred works. As the majority of these works were composed during his last and highly personalized dodecaphonic period (1950–70), we have the honor of discovering together these rarely heard and even more rarely performed gems of this 20th century titan. In a conveniently prognostic move, Alex Ross, in his December 2011 New Yorker article on Gesualdo, provides the connection of Stravinsky’s so-called “atonal” body of music to our TENEbrae series in suggesting that Stravinsky “…was delving deeper into the past, reawakening the ghost harmonies of the late Renaissance.” I invite you to immerse yourself in our offerings: phantom polyphonies and spiritual awakenings are welcome! 4 Julian Wachner Director of Music and the Arts LEAH REDDY
