G u a r d i a , D i r e c t o r The mission of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Florida State University is to create a welcoming environment that is inclusive of all students. To that end, the Office of Multicultural Affairs provides advocacy, support services, and culturally based programs that educate students on diversity and multiculturalism and empowers them to be agents of social change in an increasingly diverse and global community. • • • • • Coordinated the Dr. Antonia Pantoja Scholars program in collaboration with the Hispanic/Latino Student Union to increase and support the enrollment of Hispanic/Latino high school students into higher education Organized the 2006 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program with keynote speaker Berniece King, daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Collaborated in the 2006 FSUnity Day for over 800 students, faculty, and staff participants Sponsored receptions and programs for the following heritage month activities: Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Awareness Month, Black History Month, and Asian Awareness Month Co-sponsored Poetic Fusion, a night of diverse poetry with the six multicultural agencies at FSU • • • • Advised the OMA Ambassadors, a peer education/ mentoring program which educates the campus community on issues of diversity, multiculturalism, social justice and inclusion Coordinated the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship and the Angie Cintron Memorial Scholarship for the Division of Student Affairs Advised the following student organizations/agencies: American Indian Student Union, Asian Student Union, Black Student Union, Caribbean Student Association, Dominican Student Association, Hispanic/Latino Student Union, Jewish Student Union, Latin American Mentoring Program (L.A.M.P.), Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., and Semper Fi Society Increased attendance at the annual Multicultural Gathering and Orientation by 4% D S A A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 6 8
STRATEGIC GOALS & DIVISION INITIATIVES Increased Seminole Sensation week attendance to 19,329 participants - making it the largest SSWeek to date Initiated plans for the establishment of the Social Justice Living Learning Community to open in the new Wildwood Hall in fall 2007 Dedicated and renamed the Student Life Building to the Askew Student Life Center Landis Hall was renovated and students are completing the first year in the building; the hall was re-dedicated in November Dedicated Sherrill Williams Ragans Hall Continued planning for the merger of the Center for Civic Education and the LEAD Center which is expected late 2007 OFFICE OF RESEARCH D S A A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 6 9 T a m a r a B e r t r a n d J o n e s , D i r e c t o r The mission of the Office of Research is to optimize the capacity of the Division of Student Affairs to support students in their academic, personal, and professional development by facilitating assessment of student programs and services sponsored by the Division. • • • Represented the Division by presenting at annual national meetings of the American Evaluation Association, National Association of Student Personnel Association, and American Educational Research Association Assisted with special projects for the Center for Civic Education & Service, Campus Recreation, Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and Seminole Sensation Week activities Coordinated the development, administration, and analysis of program evaluation efforts of the Center for Civic Education and Service - America Reads Program, Campus Recreation - Outdoor Pursuits, and International Center - Beyond Borders Program • • • • • Developed and administered the Graduating Student Survey to graduating seniors through Blackboard to obtain baseline data about FSU graduates Analyzed the 2006 Cooperative Institutional Research Program data Surveyed more than 3,000 students on a variety of service and program satisfaction indicators through online surveys Administered a 360-degree evaluation survey of DSA Vice Presidential and Associate Vice Presidential leadership for internal use Initiated regular communication among and coordinated training for DSA evaluation and assessment coordinators
