In a University-wide effort led by the Office of Orientation, the Division of Student Affairs is assisting with the implementation of FSU’s new First-Year Shared Reading Program—designed to engage incoming students in a community dialogue with faculty, administrators, and fellow students as soon as they arrive on campus Advocated on behalf of the Office of Orientation to implement a new website offered in Spanish THAGARD STUDENT HEALTH CENTER L e s l e y S a c h e r , D i r e c t o r The mission of Thagard Student Health Center is to provide healthcare, prevention, education, and outreach services to a diverse student population in a safe and supportive environment. The Center promotes campus wellness, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and personal responsibility to enable students to reach their academic and personal goals. • • • • Provided services to more than 62,000 patients and over 243,000 referrals/encounters. More than 53,800 prescriptions were filled (15,839 new prescriptions and 37,961 refills) Earned the maximum three year re-accreditation from the Accreditation Associations for Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC) Implemented a “free fruit” campaign through SUNN (Students Understanding Nutrition Now) with over 6,000 pieces of fresh fruit distributed to students each month Coordinated a new smoking policy on campus which allows departments to create “Breathe Easy” zones around their buildings and designate nearby areas where smoking is allowed; 21 buildings have chosen to participate in this program thus far • • • • Reached over 15,000 students through presentations, programs and outreach, as well as, accepted applications from more than 100 students who applied to be a peer health educator to assist the health promotion staff Assisted more than 60 students to stop smoking through the smoking cessation clinic and tested over 600 students in the anonymous HIV clinic The First Responders Unit recorded 4,394 volunteer hours, 1,182 student supervisor volunteer hours, and 934 staff volunteer hours by responding to 235 requests for assistance Administered 2,672 flu vaccines for students, staff and faculty at numerous locations across campus in partnership with the School of Nursing D S A A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 6 12
COMMUNITY/ALUMNI RELATIONS Coordinated the 17th Annual Institute on College Student Values with an estimated 200 participants from 25 states and two countries Raised over $145,000 for the American Cancer Society through FSU’s 3rd annual Relay for Life event under the leadership of Thagard Student Health Center Raised over $300,000 for Children’s Miracle Network and involved thousands of individual students in participating and fundraising through the annual Dance Marathon Well over 100 FSU students participated in the 2nd Annual FSU Class Ring Ceremony Created an on-line giving opportunity for each DSA department where potential donors may now submit their financial gifts via departmental websites D S A A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 6 13 UNIVERSITY COUNSELING CENTER N i k k i P r i t c h e t t , D i r e c t o r The mission of the University Counseling Center is to enhance the academic experience of students by promoting healthy personal development through brief individual counseling, group counseling, skill enhancement and preventative outreach services. • • • • Provided services to 13,510 FSU students, faculty, staff, and family members through direct clinical interventions, prevention programming, consultation, outreach presentations and training Provided 10,786 counseling sessions (8.7% increase) to 2,050 individual students (7% increase) Conducted 588 emergency assessments of students who presented in psychological crisis which represents a 26% increase over the previous year Maintained an active group counseling program offering a variety of psychoeducational and process groups; topics included relationship issues, grief and bereavement, self understanding, and dissertation support • • • • Presented 130 outreach programs offering preventative mental health programs to 11,400 students, faculty, staff, and FSU family members Attracted 80 applicants from all over the country for three internship slots in our APA-Approved Pre-doctoral Internship Training Program Expanded RENEW membership (Realizing Everyone’s Need for Emotional Wellness), a peer educator student group, from 19 to 60 active student members and enhanced RENEW programming to include the promotion of emotional well-being, peer education workshops, and mental health awareness Taught psychiatry training seminars for the FSU Medical School and supervised medical students in their psychiatry rotations
