for him oFFice liFe The corporate environment in the Czech Republic is largely international with numerous global companies and their expatriates occupying office spaces across Prague and beyond. Those who are accustomed to doing business in an international environment won’t be lost when it comes to proper etiquette in the Czech Republic. However, there are a few things to take note of in a predominantly Czech office: Businessmen dress smart and conservative, often wearing sport coats or suits; despite how casual the Western world may be dressing, Prague-based recruiting agencies have spotted trends in much more formal style of business dress in recent years. As a foreigner in the Czech Republic, you should not remove your coat or tie in a meeting unless your Czech colleagues do first. Also, when meeting with a woman, a man waits until she extends her hand first, unless she is his boss. dAtinG Czech women (and dating and marrying them) are a hot topic on our message boards. Are they on the make? Out for a husband? After your citizenship? For all the times we’ve heard about the perfect submissiveness of Czech women, we’ve heard equally from Czech women themselves who defy this silly stereotype and note that they mainly dig guys from the West for their respectful attitudes toward women. In the big scheme of things it’s all subjective. But before you dip a toe into the Czech dating pool take heed: Chivalry is far from dead in the Czech lands. Courtesies such as taking coats and opening doors are expected. She’ll also expect you to pick up the tab. When opening doors it is important to remember one habit which is curiously different here—upon entering a restaurant, the man always goes through the door first. Women leave first. Long-established international organizations, such as the Rotary Club or Lions Club, have been set up in the Czech Republic. The Rotary Club has a number of branches in the country, in Prague and smaller towns and cities. The Lions Club International also has representation throughout the Czech Republic. Both are basically Czech-speaking organizations, but members may be able to give you useful contacts. The American Chamber of Commerce and the British Chamber of Commerce are active in the Czech Republic; the International Sports League (ISL) organizes competitive basketball, volleyball, and football leagues as a way to play competitively while meeting potential clients. The Prague Cricket Club welcomes expats as well as Czechs. Homesick Brits and Irish may wish to contact Prague Barbarians RFC, a rugby club set up by a group of expats.
