When things happen in your life that you 

don’t plan, do you find yourself trying 

to reason it all out or look for a “file” so 

to speak in your mind to put it in? What 

happens when you can’t reason it out or 

make sense of it all? 

Here’s the answer: Every one of us needs 

to create a file in our thinking called the 

“I Don’t Understand It” file. When things 

come up that don’t make sense, things 

that you can’t figure out, instead of getting 

frustrated or confused, put it in your 

“I Don’t Understand It” file and leave it 

alone. If you go through life trying to figure 

out why something bad happened 

or why things didn’t work out, it will 

cause you to become bitter and stuck 

in life. Part of trusting God means trusting 

Him when things don’t make sense 

because we know that His plan is always 

for good. We have to know that He will 

reveal all things in His time — even if that 

means in eternity. 

Is there something that didn’t make 

sense in 2012 that you know you need to 

file away? Choose to trust God. Choose 

to keep moving forward. Know that He 

loves you, He is for you, and He has a 

great plan for your future!

Why do you think it’s so important 

for Latinas to be informed 

about the Affordable Care Act? 

Today, one in three Latinos 

does not have health insurance. 

One in two does not have access 

to a consistent doctor that 

they can consider their medical 

home. As a result, Latinas are 

less likely to get the preventive 

care they need to stay healthy 

and more likely to suffer from 

a serious illness like heart disease, 

diabetes, cervical cancer, 

and HIV. Latinas have less access 

to the treatments and medicines 

they need to get better. 

And too often, Latina women, 

like other American women 

who are the caregivers for their 

families, face difficult decisions 

between getting care or

Jazz game at the Los Angeles 

Staples Center on Friday, January

raised in Inglewood, Crystal 

is currently an 11th grade student 

at City Honors College 

Prepatory Charter High School 

who has been singing since the 

age of five. 

Crystal got her first taste of entertaining 

at the age of 3-weeks 

old when she was chosen for

She booked her second

at 7-weeks of age and went on

The Presidential Inaugural 

Committee announced that poet 

Richard Blanco will be one of 

five people selected to read an 

original poem at a President 

Barack Obama’s second-term 

inauguration. Blanco, 44, will 

be the first Latino, first openly 

gay man, and youngest person 

to serve the role. Blanco, the 

son of Cuban exiles, joins the 

ranks of American inaugural 

poets, which includes legends 

such as Maya Angelou and 

Robert Frost. 

I did not know it when I walked 

into the linoleum-lined classroom 

in 2000. I did not know 

who Richard Blanco was. I 

only knew that I was a newspaper 

reporter in a small post-industrial 

Connecticut city asked to show up at a 

poetry reading at the local university to 

write an aptly named “brief” for the next 

day’s paper. 

I had been working in the suburbs of 

Hartford for nearly three years, and often 

spent days in the field seeing no other 

Asian Americans. New Britain, Connecticut, 

was the former ball-bearing capital 

of the United States, the headquarters of 

Stanley Hardware, where workers turned 

hard eyes upon me when I was sent to 

cover a protest against jobs being sent to 

China. 

On some days, white-haired men told me 

I reminded them of “a lady I met in Dubya 

Dub-ya II.” Or Korea. I answered the 

question, “Where are you from?” and 

then, “No, where are you really from?” 

So many times I gave in and stopped 

saying, “California” to the first question. 

Three years removed from my multicultural 

cocoon of the San Francisco Bay 

Area, I felt lonely and barraged. 

Blanco’s Words Changed Everything 

What Blanco said – or rather, read – 

changed everything. 

And that is why the choice of the first Latino 

and the first gay inaugural poet matters 

to Asian Americans. To all Americans. 

I spoke English; my parents didn’t.

We didn’t live in a two-story house with a 

maid or a wood-panel station wagonnor 

vacation camping in Colorado. 

None of the girls had hair of gold; 

When I walked into that classroom at 

Central Connecticut State University, I 

was an alien, Other. As Blanco read his 

poem “América” to a class of mostly 

white students, I became an “I” again. 

Sure, Blanco called his grandmother his 

abuelita and I called mine a pou pou. But 

the small revelation of recognizing myself 

in a poet and professor’s words transcended 

semantics. Blanco wrote: 

Patty Duke’s family wasn’t like us either 

they didn’t have pork on Thanksgiving, 

they ate turkey with cranberry sauce; 

they didn’t have yuca, they had yams. 

The poem is about so many things, 

but the apparent narrative describes an 

awkward family Thanksgiving that the 

young Blanco insists on, to the horror 

of his older Cuban relatives contemplating 

the turkey (“‘DRY,’ Tío Berto complained”), 

marshmallow-studded yams 

and cranberry sauce (“mierda roja,” the 

same skeptical tío proclaims). 

I had done the same in grade school, but 

my mom only agreed to prepare a single 

turkey drumstick (in her battered stewpot, 

not the oven, of course).

simple concept, as old as humanity 

itself. Embracing diversity? 

Well, that’s a relatively 

newer concept. 2012 marks a 

20-year milestone for Jarvee 

Hutcherson, recognized since 

1992, in Tinseltown and around 

the world, as the man, the visionary, 

the guiding force behind 

the Multicultural Motion 

Picture Association (MMPA) 

and its landmark Diversity 

Awards, bringing everyone in 

the industry together, spotlighting 

every facet of diversity in 

motion picture and television 

entertainment. 

Hutcherson reflects with a 

smile, “20 years strong. The 

Diversity Awards celebrates diversity 

at its core, encompassing 

all of us. Each year represents 

a new milestone. The 

diversity concept was difficult 

at first for some in the industry 

to grasp. Thankfully, MMPA’s 

Educational and Development 

Scholarship fund was something 

everyone could get behind 

and lend their support. 

The Diversity Awards caught 

on and quickly evolved into a 

first-class, yearly awards event 

honoring diversity’s shining 

stars, from A-list legends and 

key industry professionals to 

talented newcomers on the 

rise.” 

While Hutcherson is pleased 

that the MMPA and the Diversity 

Awards have accomplished 

a lot over the years and feels 

that more people are embracing 

its message, he is quick to point 

out his goal to educate everyone 

in this regard. “Diversity 

defines every single one of us. 

It means that no one is left 

out. Diversity is simply a fact 

of life, representing the great 

melting pot of humanity.” 

A much anticipated yearly kickoff 

to the movie awards season, 

the Diversity Awards have to 

date been conspicuously without 

a network broadcast home. 

Hutcherson is confident that 

now is the time for the awards 

show, taped for syndication 

since 2006, to plug into the perfect 

network outlet and launch 

in a big way. “We are currently 

negotiating for a major TV or 

Cable network to embrace the 

diversity mantle in 2012 and 

give the Diversity Awards the 

full scale, prime time exposure 

it deserves. With Hollywood’s 

biggest players in attendance, 

the awards gala is exciting, fun 

and entertaining. Above all, 

the awards recognize that we 

all have a story to tell, we’re 

all here together, and honoring 

diversity as a key element to 

today’s entertainment gives the 

Diversity Awards a distinctive

premieres and events everywhere 

to support and represent 

diversity. Bottom line, diversity 

needs to be addressed and 

seriously recognized at every 

level of the industry, by all the 

networks and studio hierarchy, 

from CEO’s to chairmen, VPs 

and presidents. Conscientious 

participation, encouragement 

and acceptance at all levels. 

The Diversity Awards is an integral 

part of that larger mission 

of diversity. The horizon is unlimited 

and with each new decade, 

diversity’s amazing potential 

will more fully present itself 

to everyone!

Hey everyone! How was your 

weekend? Mine, was great. 

First, it was wonderful to see 

so many people celebrating Dr. 

Martin Luther King and what 

a great thing for the Inauguration 

to happen on that same 

day. Equality and a great history 

graced us and that is truly 

something to ponder on and 

appreciate. Over the weekend 

I got a chance to do something 

that I long for but don’t often 

get the opportunity to do which 

was read the Wall Street Journal. 

The Wall Street Journal 

is a great source of financial 

information, historical stories 

and futuristic tidbits and dis- 

coveries. 

For instance, as much as I love 

and buy soda I just found out 

that stocks are down a smidgen 

because people are really 

into coffee, energy drinks, water 

and juices. Wow! I’ve also 

found out that stocks are high 

in socks, very interesting. They 

also talk about the “Gun Control” 

issue from a financial 

stand point and many other issues. 

My mind was in need of 

being seriously stimulated on 

an intellectual level and I received 

that. Stay tuned when I 

enlighten you about Black Enterprise

Convened for their first meeting 

of the year on Martin Luther 

Kings Original birthday. 

There was full attendance 

which overflowed into the hall 

and first floor T.V. room. The 

hot topic was changing the time 

of the meetings from 7:30 p.m. 

to 1:00 p.m. 

The next question was the validity 

of the 100 plus senior 

citizens who allegedly signed 

the papers. 

The issue was safety that they 

would be out late at night. 

However the population of 

those that were present were 

predominantly seniors. One 

person suggested that it be put 

on the ballot, another in the 

crowd said there could be a city 

shuttle bus to the meetings. 

Parking tickets given on holidays 

for street cleaning is not 

acceptable without notification 

is under appeal by a resident. 

The Mayor has been accused of 

violating the Brown Act, that 

simply states that there was a 

pre-meeting on a topic, that was 

not authorized, in which some 

council members attended. He 

later cleared himself. Several 

mentions of too high water increase. 

City had to buy water at 

a higher rate was one answer, 

and the method of calculating 

was another. Planning Dept. 

Got their share of the hot seat, 

when it came to finding information 

as to sound proofing. 

Commercial and apartments 

seem to be getting special treatment 

over 30yr residents and 

the time frame for service is 

unknown or changes without 

answers. 

During the holidays the 4th 

District received a pleasant surprise 

from church helper about

in it. Jaffe has been expressing 

himself through poetry for 30 

years – that is one of his greatest 

passions. “Poetry helps to 

provide me balance in life between 

work, family and other 

external commitments,” he 

says. “When I allow myself 

time to indulge in my passion, 

I recharge my spirit, my mind 

and my body.” 

• Remember - givers gain. 

Even when he was a broke 

young entrepreneur, Jaffe and 

his wife of 28 years, Ann, always 

made sure to give to the 

community, to their temple, to 

charity. “Give even when you 

have nothing,” he says. “It always 

comes back to bless you, 

though sometimes from a different 

source.” 

• Don’t rely on anyone else 

to make you happy. It doesn’t 

work, Jaffe says. When your 

happiness is dependent on your 

love for someone else, they

hoax has confessed 

to her and 

apologized. 

In an interview 

broadcast on the 

“Today” show 

on NBC, Diane 

O’Meara said she 

is a victim of the 

scandal, perpetrated, 

she said, 

by a Facebook 

friend, Ronaiah 

Tuiasosopo. 

“It’s very bizarre 

and it’s a very 

twisted and confusing 

scenario,” 

she said. “I’ve 

never met Manti 

Te’o in my entire 

life. I’ve never 

spoken with him. 

I’ve never exchanged 

words.” 

O’Meara, 23, 

found herself at 

the center of the 

nationwide story 

last week when it 

was revealed that 

her photograph 

was used on a 

fabricated Twitter 

profile for Lennay 

Kekua, an apparent 

online creation that the Notre Dame football 

star called his girlfriend. Teotold the nation she 

died of cancer just before the linebacker’s game 

against Michigan State. 

When it was determined O’Meara’s photo 

was used, she found herself swarmed by reporters, 

who staked out the Torrance Boulevard offices 

of STN Media Group, where she works as a 

marketing coordinator.

“Ronaiah has called and not only 

confessed but he has also apologized. I don’t 

think there’s anything he can say to me that will

and George Duke have reunited 

for a new album, taking on classic love 

songs and pop standards in A Time For 

Love (SRR Records/StarVista). Due 

out on January 29th, just prior to Valentine’s 

Day 2013, A Time For Love 

pairs the Grammy-nominated vocalist 

with one of the greatest jazz and 

R&B producers of all time to create 

a collection of beloved songs updated 

with incredible arrangements and Os- 

borne’s signature baritone. The album 

also features a trio of top jazz musicians 

Christian McBride on bass, John 

Roberts on drums and Duke himself 

on keyboards. Saxophonists Everette 

Harp, Kamasi Washington, guitarist 

Paul Jackson, and Rick Braun on 

trumpet make special guest appearances. 

And the incomparable Chaka Khan

got to hear all of that before I would 

put on my little doo wop music, Motown 

and stuff. Plus my father was a 

great trumpet player and he would listen

and Clifford Brown and I got a chance 

to learn about all these great trumpet

players back then. So despite my love 

for Motown and doo wop, I really grew 

up listening to jazz and standards.” 

A Time For Love brings Osborne together 

with legendary producer George 

Duke, to create an album for the first 

time since the pair ruled the charts in 

the ‘80s with Jeffrey’s first three solo 

albums. “When I finally got the opportunity 

to make this album, I knew 

there was no one else I would want to 

do this with other than George.” 

“Jeffrey and I work really well together 

and we have a long history,” adds 

George Duke. “We haven’t done it in 

a long time and it was special to come 

back and do this kind of album.” Duke 

also inadvertently brought in Chaka 

Khan for guest vocals. “’Baby It’s Cold 

Outside’ was actually recommended 

by Chaka. I was at a UN concert with 

Chaka Khan earlier in the year,” Duke 

continues, “and when I told her about 

Jeffrey’s record, right away she said ‘I 

want to be on it.’” “It’s a funny song,” 

adds Osborne, “although it’s also very 

naughty in a nice way. We had a lot 

of fun recording it and coming up with 

the banter. It was a great choice.” 

Surrounding the release of the album, 

Osborne will be the subject of a special 

on the Centric network and host a 

release party on the sold-out 2013 Soul 

Train Cruise, departing on February 

17th from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. 

“It ended up that, for the most part, 

these are the songs that I grew up singing 

when I was 13 years old, singing in 

nightclubs in Rhode Island,” Osborne 

concludes. “These are some of my favorites.”

industry professionals and NAACP

five nominees in each of the 53 categories. 

Those results were announced at a 

press conference. To determine the winners, 

the members of the NAACP vote 

via a secured online site. The results are 

tabulated by the Image Awards auditors,

the Miró Quartet was founded in 1995 at 

the Oberlin Conservatory. The dynamic 

ensemble was greeted with immediate 

success upon winning first place at the 

1996 annual Coleman Chamber Music

prizes at the Fischoff National Chamber 

Music Competition the same year. The 

Cleveland Plain Dealer praised the quartet’s

streak with first place and the Piéce de 

Concert Prize at the 1998 Banff International 

String Quartet Competition. 

The group scored the prestigious Naumburg

to claim the coveted Avery Fisher Career

Austin Chronicle calling Miró Quartet’s 

voice “articulate, expressive, and nuanced

Named for celebrated Spanish Catalan 

artist Joan Miró, whose surrealist works

scoffed as I feigned enthusiasm, 

feeling more like Wilma 

Flintstone than a pilgrim. We 

were descended from those who 

perfected the art of baking fatty 

duck to a crisp. 

It’s a seemingly small thing, to 

get sent on a routine reporting 

assignment and hear a recounting 

of immigrant Thanksgiving 

that uncannily resembles one’s 

own experience. I wrote nothing 

of the turkey, of the poem, 

of Blanco’s immigrant roots. I 

wrote exactly three sentences 

highlighting an upcoming ap-

doesn’t always stick around – 

sometimes it comes into our 

lives in order to teach us how 

to care. We have to rely on ourselves. 

• Be the very best you can be 

at whatever you do. Don’t compare 

yourself to your competition,

Instead, raise the bar on yourself. 

“Even if I get knocked 

down at something, I can be 

happy when I know I gave it my 

very best effort,” Jaffe says. “I 

don’t always succeed, but I can 

give an even better effort the 

next time because I will have 

learned from being knocked 

down. Defeat is being knocked 

down; failure is the unwillingness 

to get back up!”

keep them positive. “My kids 

used to come to me to complain 

when they were unhappy 

about something,” Jaffe says. 

“I would tell them, ‘If you do 

not like the way you feel, just 

change the way you think!’ It 

drove them crazy!” But they

making them feel bad. Jaffe

He proposed and instituted a 

Wellness-at-Work Program for 

sworn, non-sworn and civilian 

personnel of every fitness level, 

and holds one-hour workout 

sessions two to three times a 

day, several times a week. He 

teaches methods for reducing 

stress and improving eating 

habits and overall health. His 

sensitivity, genuine concern 

and encouragement have led 

many Airport Police employees 

to exercise more and focus on 

improving their health. 

Demonstrating one of the 

core values of Airport Police, Officer 

Montes consistently goes 

above and beyond what is expected. 

He has become a role 

model to others by encouraging 

his peers to take pride in 

their profession, to always be 

supportive of one another, and 

to be their best physically. Officer 

Cipriano Montes is a true 

example of a caring, compassionate 

and focused leader in 

the aviation law enforcement

training seniors learn how to 

text, blog, and even produce 

a podcast. We also offer Rise 

Above the Noise for educators 

and youth development practitioners, 

which teaches how 

new media tools can be used to 

change the perception of Black 

youth in education, as well as 

a Diversity Leaders Bootcamp, 

where youths from the ages of 

13 to 25 learn critical media literacy 

and leadership development
