Club President
DAVID BARKER
Welcomes
LEIGH
This afternoon we extend a very warm welcome to the players, committee and supporters of Leigh
RUFC to the Memorial Ground. Back in November we had an excellent game away at Leigh. At one
time with 5 minutes to go we were leading by 30 points to 3. That Leigh scored 2 late converted
tries is testament to the effort they put in and really reflected the closeness of the contest. We
played some outstanding rugby that day and I see that I wrote in the programme for the following
home game versus Liverpool St. Helens (subsequently postponed) that "this is the way we want to
play and must play if we are to hold our own against what, in most instances, is a much bigger pack
of forwards. It was exhilarating to watch and I am sure to play in, which after all is what we are
trying to do". I also added that "the Alikadoos who travelled with me to Leigh were treated royally. A
warm welcome from the committee and supporters before and after the game was most kind and
generous and we look forward to seeing them in March when I hope we can reciprocate." We will do
our best today, off the field to least, to return their warm hospitality.
As for ourselves over the last three weeks , we have had a somewhat rollercoaster ride.. We started
off by playing Burnage at home and playing some quite superb rugby against the then League
leaders. A win by 23 points to 9 really did reflect the play and the effort that the whole team put
in. The next 2 games, both away against teams at the bottom of the League and desperate for
points, were in complete contrast. We still stuck to our high speed adventurous rugby but on
both occasions the final pass either flew overhead, was dropped or somehow butchered. In all we
seemed to miss five or six relatively easy chances to score and had even two or three of them been
taken, would have given us easy wins and reflected the overall performance of the team. It is
however easy to get down after these two set backs and it will be up to coaches Giles Hegarty and
Steve Swindells and captain Mike Clifford to lift the side for this important fixture. We will surely
have to play at our best to come away with the points today and to consolidate our League position
of 6th. With Kirkby Lonsdale, New Brighton and our visitors Leigh all winning last weekend, the
relegation end of the league is not just as cut and dried as it looked a couple of weeks ago and we
could do with the points coming from a win to ensure we don’t suddenly find ourselves drawn into a
bottom of the table scrap.
Turning to the other teams, the Vikings lost a close encounter at home to Leigh ,20 points to 27 , the
3rds. had a good win against Old Bedians 10-0 and the 4ths had a fine win away at Village Spartan
17 - 29. I see from the website that most of their report was written in Latin so if I may say to Andy
Duggan and his team " Spartam nactus es hanc exorna"!
Finally, a reminder to all that the Wilmslow Half Marathon is being run at Pownall Park on Sunday
27th March. Much work is still to be done to ensure another successful outcome so if you feel you
can help in any way, please contact me or Dave Scanlon or parking maestro Kit Clucas. It really is a
case of many hands make light work and you will also get a free bacon buttie and a cup of tea !
Finally can I thank today's sponsors Morris Homes Ltd. and Mike Gaskell for sponsoring today's game
and hope that they and their friends have a memorable time.

LEIGH
Over recent seasons, matches against Leigh have always been closely
contested whether in this league or the one below, when we were frequently
competing for the top spot. Barry Fisher‟s records show that we first met at
1st. XV level in 1995/96 in what must have been the old North West 2
league, Wilmslow winning 23-15 on that occasion. We have now met
twenty one times and the record shows thirteen wins for Wilmslow, eight for
Leigh and a points for/against of 355 to 344 in favour of Wilmslow.
Leigh are now in their fourth consecutive season in this league, going up the year we were coming out of it
again in 2006/07. They had looked favourites to win SLC1 the previous season when they visited us unbeaten
but on the day they went down by 19-14 and then lost their way on the run in. Only Ben Day and Bob
MacCallum survive from that Wilmslow side. Leigh players have on the other hand proved more durable with
Ms. Forshaw, Dyson, Hampson, Crompton, Barton, Knapman, Bentham, Lee, Riley, Eccles and the Woods
from the 2005 side still turning out this season.
Neither side has contested the top spots in North 1 West
over the last three seasons but Leigh are now hovering just
one point and one place above the relegation zone. Last
weekend, they beat Wigton 34-6 but it was a good weekend
for the lower clubs with New Brighton winning against
Sandbach and Kirkby Lonsdale earning five points against
us, so their relative position wasn‟t improved. They are
certain to be very dangerous opponents today and the
comfortable win we enjoyed against them last November
should be totally disregarded. The margins will as always be
very fine.
Back then, the Wolves had put on one of their best displays
of the season, scoring three tries through Lillie, Brierley and
MacCallum. On the day, their scrummaging and ball
retention had been much improved from the week before and
both sides had benefited from the refereeing of Sr. Pedro
Fonseca, a former Portuguese international hooker, who had
allowed the game to flow without in any way losing control.
There was no report on their web site of last week‟s win
against Wigton when I had a look so I went to the Wigton
side to see what I could glean. Wigton report that they had
travelled somewhat shorthanded as Cumbrian clubs always
seem to do and had come up against a Leigh side containing
a number of first choice players returning from either injury
or absence. Although having plenty of the play, Wigton
found Leigh just too well organised to break down and were
frequently caught on the break. Five tries were scored
through No. 8 Mark Welsh, flanker Denis Bate, second row
Paul Hampson
and wingers Adam
Dyson and Tom
Forshaw, the last
three of whom
have all caused
Wilmslow grief in
the past.. The
Wolves have
every reason to be
on their guard
from a resurgent
Leigh side.
Wilmslow 23 – 9 Burnage
There were no ifs and buts about this one. The Wolves simply carried on from where they had left off the week before and
were well worth their fourteen point winning margin against the league leaders from Burnage. Right from the start the
Wolves had showed their intent to play expansive rugby coupled with an aggressive „in your face‟ defence and the visitors
just couldn‟t find any answer.
Burnage have a fine home record this season but on the road their margins have been much narrower and their only loss
this season had been earlier this month away to Northwich. With only one home fixture still to play and away visits to all
the other title contenders to come, they will have done well if they‟re still top of the heap at the end of April. This though
was a match from which they would have been expected to come away with a win against supposedly weaker opposition
but on the day, they just weren‟t allowed to settle and to impose themselves on events. Their forwards were held
throughout and without a dominant platform, their backs were forced to attack from deep positions into the face of a
determined defence that gave nothing away and inevitably errors costing them possession crept in as they tried to force
the pace.
It wasn‟t long before Elliot Brierley and Chris Lillie on the Wilmslow wings were being released by their inside backs from
anywhere on the pitch to torment their opponents with incisive line breaking runs. This adventurous approach, of course,
is not without risk when passes go adrift, land in no man‟s land or are dropped. Burnage though were unable to capitalise
as Wolves players were normally able to scramble back to tidy up any mess of their own making.
The opening score came after ten minutes, when a typical Wolves raid forced the visitors to concede a penalty to Josh
Longmore in front of their own posts. Danny Jones, the hugely influential Wolves No. 8, then took an accidental bang on
the head and had to
leave the field for
repairs and whilst this
was going on, his
substitute, Danny
Kennedy, crossed for
the Wolves first try on
the quarter hour. The
Wolves had turned
over an attacking
Burnage lineout and
spun the ball out to
Brierley on the opposite
wing and when he was
stopped the ball was
recycled to centre Mike
Black, who regathered
his own kick ahead to
feed Chris Lillie on the left. He was pulled down just short of the line but the loose ball was gathered by the supporting
Kennedy who plunged over. The whole move had been executed at blinding pace and showed what they were capable
of.
Next blood was an Adam Knight penalty for Burnage but the Wolves were soon in their faces again, forcing an error in
midfield, which was hacked on by Lillie, who outstripped everyone for the score. There was still time for a second
Longmore penalty before the break, which arrived 18-3 to the Wolves.
The second half started with that kindly Wolves prop, Taff Bartlem, playing his last game for the side before taking up a
new appointment in London, being harshly yellow carded for a technical offence which referee Damian Hamilton clearly
thought was deliberate. Whilst he was off the field, Burnage‟s Adam Knight reduced the margin to 18-9 with two penalties.
It was to be the only period of the game in which they were to have the upper hand.
When Bartlem returned, the Wolves just seemed to pick up the pace. Jones was conspicuous around the fringes, always
gaining a yard or two, whether he was carrying the ball, tackling or harassing; Kennedy covered and tackled bravely in the
open spaces and the pocket battleship, which is Chris Lillie just stood out with his powerful play. It was hardly a surprise
when Jones charged down a Burnage No. 10, Mike Raikes, clearing kick for stand in fly half, Ricky Chadwick, to touch
down on 60 minutes. That was to be the final score but an exciting final quarter saw Burnage‟s Raikes, Stuart Oldham
and Neil Baxter try everything to break out of the stranglehold to no avail as the best chances continued to fall to the
Wolves. Kennedy was called back for a supposed forward pass and several penalty opportunities were missed when they
found themselves without a kicker, following Longmore‟s departure with a knee injury.
No matter, it had been an excellent game of rugby with both sides contributing. Coach Giles Heagerty declared himself
happy with what he felt had been the best performance of the season. We outplayed the top side in the league, he said,
and if only we could play like that every week, then it would be us at the top, not them………………..if only!

20 clubs in the Manchester and Cheshire Area. The ladies won both Senior Ladies and Vets Ladies championships
with the men winning the Vets championship and finished third in the Senior Men. The winter season finished with
both teams running in the National Cross Country Championships, the blue ribbon event of club cross country running.
This year the club also provided two further runners to the English Vets international team.
watch from the Marathon team.
The Asics Wilmslow Half Marathon is now
just two weeks away tomorrow (27 th March),
and many of the clubs runners will be competing.
All three of the Men’s team that finished 9 th in
the Virgin London Marathon will be running
and watch out for Mike Halman who should
be just inside 70 minutes .Mike ran 2.29 in
the Virgin London Marathon last year . Rob
Downs and Jim Pendrill will be two others to
We expect the ladies to be lead home by their captain, Kate Sutton who will be instantly recognisable from her main of
Morris’s head office is in
Altrincham Road,
Wilmslow and a glance at
their web site shows that
they have on going
developments all over the
North West and Midlands
but not at present in
Wilmslow.
Martin Hill reports a strong representation by theU15s for Cheshire in
the forthcoming county matches; the first game is away against
Lancashire on Wed 16th March at Sefton RUFC,followed by matches
against Yorkshire at Bowdon on 10 th . April; North Wales at Wirral on
13 th . April; and Kent at a venue still to be arranged on 19 th ./20 th . April.
By the looks of things Wilmslow has the biggest representation of all
Cheshire clubs:
Those selected Tom Fairclough (wing); Jake Dickinson (centre); Sam
Lawton (No8/Prop); Rory Hill (Lock) and Dan Percival (Prop) in the
full Cheshire squad with Huw Smith (Scrum Half) and Mike Parker
(No8) making the A squad. Congratulations to all of them and the best
of luck.
The U13s and U15s braved the wind and rain at the Caldy junior tournament
last weekend. The U13s didn’t have one of their best days losing three
games against Crewe & Nantwich, Wirral and Sheffield Tigers and winning
only once against Ruthin. The U15s made the Plate final but they had
travelled with only sixteen players and by the time of the final, they were
down to playing the walking wounded and despite a final flourish ended up
on the losing side.
The U14s, the only survivors in this year’s Cheshire Cup competitions, kept
in practice by winning 31-20 at Leek. They were 14 points up after just five
minutes but Glyn Howell’s report suggested that they then took their feet off
the pedal and didn’t play as well as they could have done for the remainder
of the game. They’ll need to be sharper when it comes to their next round cup match.
Congratulations to Elliot Brierley, Tom Hall, Ollie Longmore and Lewis McKay on being selected for the
county’s U20 side last Sunday against Northumberland, which the Giles Heagerty coached team won by 39-20.
Elliot Brierley was amongst the scorers but none of the front row boys, I’m told, crossed the whitewash. In all
seven tries were scored.
A fortnight ago, the side demolished Durham by 87-3, scoring fifteen tries in the process.
Against Lancashire, they were unlucky to lose 20-15, despite having the better of the second half in terms of
possession and territory and only against the current holders Yorkshire were they decisively beaten by 18-0.
Dave Ewing’s report on the Cheshire web site indicates that, although Cheshire were short of several first
choice players that day., they defended stoutly without ever getting much of the rub of the green.
They still have one game against Cumbria to play next Sunday at New Brighton on 20th. March. Giles
Heagerty also believes that some of the Wilmslow boys have a good chance of progressing to the North of
England squad.
NOT JUST A COMMUN ITY CLUB BUT A FAMILY CLUB TOO. DADS AND
LADS PLAY FOR THE DEVELOPMENTALS.
Some of you may have been watching another match, but Wilmslow 3rds only had 12 players an hour before kick
off, so yes I foolishly fulfilled my promise and told my son Mark that we would play on the same team ….. But I
would need to be 10 mins on and 10 mins off , otherwise there was no way I would survive….BUT there were only
14 of us and we were away to Lymm who had a full squad of 23…. They loaned us a player and the battle
commenced and at half time we were holding our own 11-5 down – ours a nice chip and chase from Mark….AND
yes I was still on the field – on the field agreed, effective…. Occasionally…. perhaps…
The final score, who cares, we know who had the moral Victory!
Lymm rang in the changes and ran in a few tries in the middle
of the second half. But then on the half way line ( note this
bit..) in the last 10 our fly half saw them flat and chipped,
Mark ran on, caught the ball in mid flight, and went head over
heals as his opposite winger slapped in a tap tackle, he was up
and off again, over came their full back, another tap tackle and
Mark went down again, only to roll over and pass to out tight
head prop … yes, don’t know how he got there, but the cover
tackles came in and he went down a yard from the line ( this is
where you need to remember where the move started
from…..), the red mist was rising…in came our valiant 2 nd row
( that’s me… yes 2 nd row, it was a scratch team ) to touch the
ball down on the line…… but the ref didn’t see it…was it
just a dream…. We got a 5 yard scrum and were camped out
on their line to the end of the match, but the try …. Well it
was just not to be.
And what did look like after 80 Mins…. See the picture. Finally I have to report that, no I wasn’t the oldest player
on the pitch – for those of you who know Simon Muckle was playing inside centre, with his son Rick just outside
him…. And I don’t feel that bad today, it’s only 20 years since I last played a full game…. Maybe… but not for 80
mins….. not in a long time.
Saturday 26 th . February 2011 North 1 West
New Brighton 22 – 17 Wilmslow
The kindest that can be said about the Wolves display against New Brighton is that they started and finished well
but that the intervening seventy minutes were a huge disappointment.
It‟s a sporting enigma that‟s never been solved to understand why much the same group of players can one
week put on a sparkling champagne style performance and then follow it a week later with something akin to the
murky contents of the cheapest bottle from the bottom shelf. Coach Giles Heagerty was in no doubt afterwards.
„Whatever team you‟re playing, whether at the top or bottom of the league, the margins are fine and your attitude
has to be right,‟ he said. „It had been a poor week at practice and it showed in the way we approached and
played this game. We lost because we allowed the New Brighton side to control the tempo of the game, to slow
it down to the pace at which they wanted to play and to disrupt our possession. It was all just very
disappointing‟. „Our forwards are just not getting to grips with their opponents,‟ sighed club president David
Barker during the game and consequently the backs were too often getting the ball without sufficient time or
space.
It didn‟t help, of course, that both first choice fly halves were unavailable, one through injury and one through
work commitments and that the Wolves had to take the field without a recognised kicker. Also missing from the
previous week‟s winning side was Dan Wright, Danny Kennedy and Taff Bartlem. It turned out to be an
awkward day for stand in No. 10, Ricky Chadwick, who nevertheless acquitted himself without letting himself
down. There is a no more whole hearted committed player in the Wolves squad than Chris Lee but it‟s asking a
lot of him to play in a different position every week. So far this season, he‟s been selected at scrum half, centre
three quarter, open side flanker and here he was on the right wing, perhaps indicative of the reserve strength
currently available for selection. Elsewhere in the side, skipper Mike Clifford started as the blind side flanker but
it wasn‟t long before he reverted to his natural second row position, when young Harrison Lewis took a knock,
bringing on Alex Taylor but it was good to see Alex Donaldson back in the front row after a long lay off through
injury.
Yet it had all started so brightly. The Wolves moved the ball along the line with pace right from the start,
stretching their opponent‟s defence, went up the field, won an indirect free kick, allowing Rob Cowley to power
over for the opening score after just four minutes. But that was as good as it was going to get.
From the restart, the home side slowly started to gain control. The Wolves clearly had the more incisive and
quicker runners, when they got the ball but the pack was just increasingly outplayed as the New Brighton
forwards made the hard yards. Three consecutive Wolves put ins at the scrum went awry and on the third
occasion, New Brighton‟s Steve Dean stepped up to land a penalty. The Wilmslow lineout was no more secure
than their scrum as New Brighton began to dominate possession and territory. Fortunately for the Wolves, they
lacked any kind of cutting edge as at least two clear cut try scoring opportunities went begging and Dean went
wide with two more penalty attempts against a stiff breeze. No matter, they were soon in the ascendency again
at the start of the second half as their confidence seemed to grow. Scenting no doubt that NB were in with a
chance, their Tongan centre Mafi Simione became an increasing threat, playing a pivotal part in putting left
winger Gareth Simpson in at the corner. Two catch and drive tries on sixty and seventy minutes followed as the
Wolves were forced to chase the game.
With fifteen minutes to go, the Wolves then rang the changes, as Ben Day came on at full back, Matty King
moved up to fly half, Chadwick into the centre, Brierley onto the wing and Adam Hewitt into the pack as Lee and
Clancy were substituted. Two substitutes, five positional changes. The French word „chaotique‟ comes to mind
as the recast line up regularly handed the initiative back with forward or dropped passes, untidy heels and, you
name it, just about everything else too. Fortunately only the merest handful of supporters had bothered to make
the journey to Leaseowe - not that there were many more from the home side - as otherwise with any more
present, I swear, their groans of despair would have been heard back in Wilmslow itself.
New Brighton were home and dry when with two minutes left on the clock, the Wolves at last put a move
together for Ben Day to chase his own kick ahead, referee Simon Kirk then awarding him a penalty try, when he
was illegally held back off the ball. A final flurry from the Wolves followed, Cowley charged through the centre,
off loaded and a quick pass put Brierley in for a losing bonus point.
It was too little and too late though. Just a bad day at the office.
Recent weeks have been trying for Ms.
Hamilton and Duggan, who have found
a shortage of players for all manner of
reasons– leaving the area for work
reasons, injuries, international duty and
unavailability– making it difficult to
raise sides. They deserve considerable
recognition for keeping their show on
the road and hopefully, now that the
colts season has effectively ended,
eligible players from that age group
wanting to play will now get their
opportunity.
‘Magna est Diligentia et Praevalebit’, as
Geoff Knight would say.
Neither Tim Medwell nor Matt
Hamilton had much or anything to say
about their team performances last
weekend, so it was left to Geoff Knight
to entertain us with his report of the
Ravens against the Village Spartans,
once again with liberal use of Latin to
make his points.
This has had an obvious effect on our
president, I note, as it has inspired him
to confuse us all in this week’s match
notes with a quotation supposedly
extracted from his Latin primer. In fact,
it’s his old school motto, which all
Lorettonians will have known since they
were small boys in short trousers.
That reminds me that it’s the annual
Calcutta Cup bash tomorrow, an
occasion when certain kinds of
gentlemen tend to wear their old school
ties, so don’t be surprised if our
president is seen forsaking his club tie
for his Fettesian Lorettonian one.

The Mini Festival will for the first time be a two day affair
on the 16th. and 17th. April. The rationale behind the
change in format is principally to enable the whole event
to be held at the Memorial Ground, rather than half here
and the other half on the Jim Evison field, where the
council impose a number of restrictions on what can
and cannot be done. The organisers believe that by
consolidating the event over two days on the club’s own
land, it will be enhanced and be a more enjoyable
experience, especially for those age groups which in the
past have had to do their stuff away from the focal point
I was sorry to hear that Danny Jones had
broken his arm in last week’s home game
against today’s visitors, Leigh. He is the latest
in what has turned out to be a long line of
seriously injured players, leading to a total of
41 players having played for the 1st XV. This
means we have had to play some of our
younger players who, although promising,
really needed a season or so in the Vikings in
my opinion.
Of those, captain Mike Clifford had played the most games, 19 out of 20, closely
followed by Ricky Chadwick, Bob McCallum, Chris Lee, and Mathew King, with 18.
We have scored 64 tries; 49 by the backs and only 13 by the forwards, unless we
add in the two tries scored by Mr. Penalty try, and converted 39.
It was my first visit to Kirby Lonsdale last Saturday and I was impressed by the set
-up there. They have a fine clubhouse in what must be one of the most scenic
grounds in the country, in a valley surrounded as they are by the benevolent (last
Saturday anyway) slopes of the Pennines. Vale of Lune, not too far from there, also
have a scenic ground and our own Pownall Park looks pretty impressive when the
Styal Wood trees are in leaf.
I was away for the game, staying in the Barbon Inn (highly recommended for its
excellent food and quality Wainwrights beer) with President David Barker, Jonty
Fallows and Norman Herring and we were reminiscing about the characters on the
touchline from days past, with particular mention of the sadly missed Dunstan
Brain, scourge of referees, and Dougie Lomas, player of the 1920’s, who was
impartial in his criticism. Of one Wilmslow player, he shouted, “I am the spectator
here number 7, not you, go and get stuck in” and was unkind to the Fylde players,
“Come on Wilmslow, you can beat this team of boarding house keepers”. Mention
was made of David Garner, touch judge for many years, who was not averse to
stealing a yard or two in our favour. At his funeral, Peter Poizer suggested that he
must have gained many miles for us over the years. Today, if our linesmen are too
honest, spectator opinion is that “he is not from the David Garner school of touch
judging.” Following a small contretemps with the referee away at Wirral a few
weeks ago, for which unlike one of our players and club coach, he was fortunate
not to be cited to the disciplinary committee, yours truly has promised not to be so
vociferous in future. Watch this space.
Reading Barry’s piece, I am reminded of the immortal remarks of one, Dr. Jammy
Clinch, who was playing in the back row for Ireland against Wales sometime back in
the 1920s. He was up against a Welshman called Lemon and Clinch was reputed to
have said during a minor contretemps, “ Any more of that Lemon and I’ll make an
orange out of you - pips and all.”

Kirkby Lonsdale 26 – 23 Wilmslow
Another nail in the coffin of Wilmslow‟s dismal record away from home this season was duly hammered home
by an enthusiastic Kirkby Lonsdale side. The Wolves had ample opportunities last weekend at Kirkby
Lonsdale‟s picturesque ground on the edge of the Dales to have been out of sight within thirty minutes. Only
once though did they manage a try, squandering at least three other cast iron chances by players getting
isolated, throwing out long speculative passes, kicking the ball away and being harshly called back for a
perfectly good scoring pass, which was ruled to be forward. The old maxim of „more haste less speed‟ came
to mind as the Wolves though continually took the most unlikely options instead of patiently going through the
phases, when that was required. In the end, they paid a heavy price for their profligacy, when the home side
mounted something of a scoring blitz in the first quarter of the second half to effectively, as it proved, kill off
the game.
Three weeks ago, the KL side were languishing one place off the foot of the table, seemingly destined for
relegation back to the Cumbrian and North Lancashire league but they had sparked a revival with two
successive narrow wins, away at Wigton and last week at home against Broughton Park. Mindful of
Wilmslow‟s recent record, they had earmarked this game as winnable and were most certainly up for it. The
Wolves welcomed back fly half Bob MacCallum after his enforced absence on the ski slopes and showed two
changes in the pack which had been outplayed at New Brighton the previous week. Number 8 Danny Jones
was unable to travel so his place went to the young Danny Kennedy and Ollie Longmore started in the front
row in place of Jack Walmsley.
From the start, left wing Chris Lillie made a trade mark break, running from his own half deep into the KL
twenty two in front of the posts. Unfortunately, he had become just isolated from his own support and the
quick ball needed was illegally held up by the KL defence. MacCallum kicked the penalty but it was three
points instead of seven. At this stage of the game, danger threatened every time the Wolves backs got the
ball and after ten minutes, MacCallum was released to race away under the posts. Twice full back, Matthew
King then did all the hard work in bisecting and carving his way through to promising positions which should
have led to further scores but twice he got isolated and the opportunities were lost. It hadn‟t been all one way
traffic though as the nuggety KL pack showed how capable it was in keeping possession and ploughing up the
territory. It may not be the biggest pack or contain as many rugged hill farmers as it used to but their
successors maintain the tradition of being awkward competitors. Scrum half James Hadwin landed two
penalties to keep them in touch and then when Ben Day on the Wilmslow right tried a dinky little kick in the KL
twenty two on the half hour, it fell to the home side and sensing space on their right they were soon in Wolves
territory, where they recycled twice before No. 10 Liam Cleary found himself up against Wolves prop Tom
Hall. It was no contest as he galloped round him for a critical score. It was 16-11 for the Wolves at half time
with MacCallum scoring all the Wolves points but everyone knew that with the home side now about to enjoy
the fall of the land and a steady North wind at their backs, the pendulum was about to shift.
It only took them a couple of minutes to force a good attacking scrum, which enabled them to put full back
Martin Knapton in at the corner. This was followed by another scrum from which they powered over to gain
the lead for the first time, number 8 Tosh Shepherd getting the touch down. At this stage the Wolves had not
laid hand on the ball since the start of the half and worse was to follow, as the Wolves forwards drove forward
for scrum half Stuart Lindsay only to throw out a pass on half way which KL‟s open side flanker George Close
gratefully accepted for an interception try. If Cleary had been on target with his conversions, then it would
have been game over but he wasn‟t and the door was still ajar.
To their credit, the Wolves staged a revival, one forward drive out of defence was particularly impressive as
they all gathered round with backs straight and low. Bits and pieces of phases started to come together as
some continuity was added to their efforts. Winger Tom Raynor, on for Chris Lillie, went close with a good run
and with a bit more confidence to back himself might just have made the line. There was still twenty minutes
left when prop Lewis McKay did just that, leaving a trail of bodies hanging on in his wake as he got the score
to reduce the deficit to three points. And that was how it stayed. The Wolves probably had the better of the
last quarter but still insisted on losing possession in promising positions and the home side probably had the
best chance to lock and bolt the door, when they fouled up a scrum, which looked certain to produce a try, on
the Wolves line. A final last desperate drawn out play by the Wolves got them into the KL twenty two for a
final time before referee blew for no side.
In scoring four tries, it would be churlish not to applaud the winning side‟s play but the Wolves really only had
themselves to blame for the outcome. Coach Giles Heagerty was bitterly disappointed. He is convinced that
this side has sufficient raw rugby talent but it must be applied with better decision making. Others would say
that a bit more nous would make a big difference.
HEARTBROKEN
Wilmslow High School missed out narrowly on a Daily Mail Cup final at Twickenham in a 20-17 defeat at the
hands of the holders Whitgift thanks to a great performance from their centre, Elliot Daly.
CHRIS HEAL AT BROADSTREET RFC
Sport can be cruel at times. With a kick from the talented Will Batterbury, the side top of the Schools Rugby
performance league, was only a posts width away from taking this thrilling Daily Mail Cup Semi-Final game to
penalty kicks but by the finest of margins the ball sailed the wrong side of the posts. Before the game had even
begun it seemed like Wilmslow had been written off by everyone but themselves. Their creative belief would‟ve been
boosted by the return of Toby Rowe, making his first competitive game of rugby since this time last year. Along with
this, they had Max Harvey back who missed the quarter final with a shoulder injury and Tom Hudson joined the
squad late as he was with the England U16 squad after his call up earlier this month. For Whitgift their reputation
said it all, holders of the Daily Mail Cup and with the young starlet Elliot Daly, England U20 and London Wasps U18
player, at the helm they were seen as clear favourites not only to beat Wilmslow, but to regain the trophy.
Reputation, however, can count for nothing unless you can prove it consistently and when Wilmslow scored first,
Whitgift knew they weren‟t going to be in for an easy ride.
In the programme notes Roger Hancock‟s speeches were dubbed as „legendary‟ and whatever him and Matt
Bebbington said, it rubbed off on the players. After an incoherent first 9 minutes Wilmslow looked like they were
shading the opening proceedings, even after some excellent ball carrying from Whitfgift. Good scummaging from the
Wilmslow pack, in particular Sam Rodman, allowed their gifted backs to come into the game as Tom Hudson and
Olly McCall both tried to create opportunities.
Twelve minutes in for Wilmslow and a dream start
as skipper Ethan Harding read the Whitgift
passage of play and intercepted the pass to then
go on to steam under the posts after a 40 metre
run. McCall did what he does best and slotted
over the extras. Both sides then missed penalty
opportunities but Wilmslow had the greater
possession in the first half. It was galling then that
Oscar Hirskyji Douglas appeared to be impeded
when he was about to stop a fine break by Daly
that lead to Whitgift‟s opening score as half time
approached. A penalty then sent Whitgift in at half
time 10-7 to the good.
The second half started with Whitgift exerting the pressure and once again it was Daly who kicked a penalty and
then cut through the defence to score under the posts. Wilmslow now needed fourteen points without reply to get to
Twickenham. With 15 minutes left Wilmslow‟s tenacity won them a penalty as Whitgift started to look edgy and were
forced into errors. They were caught off side and McCall comfortable nailed it.
Another darting run from Hudson gained valuable territory for Wilmslow and it lead to their second and most crucial
try of the game. From left to right conducted by McCall, Wilmslow were worrying the holders and when the ball fell to
Max Harvey he used his gusto to find his way through a crowd of players to one handily, touch the ball down and
Wilmslow were back in business. From the restart Wilmslow were straight back in the faces of their opponents and
won a penalty with just seconds remaining. Now this is a scenario which the majority of Wilmslow players must have
dreamt off last night, a chance score in the last minute. Batterbury was selected for the kick because he is left footed
and it was from the right side of the pitch, but more importantly he has kicked under pressure, most notably at
Twickenham in the U15 final last year. The 15 year old looked cool, calm and collected as he had the chance to level
the game. As the ball looked certain to go over, it floated wide to sound of the final whistle and jubilant Whitgift
players.
“Immensely proud and over the moon” Hancock and Bebbington said they were in an emotional post match talk
judging by the facial expressions on Harvey and Street you just knew how much it had hurt them to lose like that and
miss out on a chance of gracing the turf Twickenham. Nevertheless they are still the top school for rugby in the
north as well as top of the performance league and more importantly have the chance of silverware with the
Cheshire Cup where they have got byes to the semi finals.
BARRY FISHER’S PREDICTIONS
Altrincham Kersal v Burnage
A top-of-the-table clash. A tight game, but I think Burnage have recovered their form and will end Kersal’s
unbeaten record. That’ll put the pressure on Liverpool St.Helens, who should finish top of the table today.
Sandbach v Northwich
A Local derby. Northwich, who have found some form since they had two players sent off againt Burnage
and have crept up the table, will be too strong for Sandbach. Northwich win.
Vale of Lune v Broughton Park.
Park seem to have gone off the boil recently and, like us, lost to Kirby Lonsdale. Vale are hard to beat at
home, so a Vale win.
West Park v New Brighton.
A bottom of the table clash. New Brighton have eased themselves out of the bottom three and will be too
strong for West Park, who look doomed to go down. New Brighton win.
Wigton v Liverpool St.Helens.
At home, Wigton are a better side, as all their farmers become available, but they will still lose to a strong
Liverpool St.Helens side.
Wilmslow v Leigh
Unless Wilmslow cut out the errors in their game, they will give away too many points as they did at Kirby
Lonsdale last weekend. My heart says a Wilmslow win but my brain is less certain. Leigh might just shade
it, although I haven’t seen them play. I hope I am wrong. Let’s keep the faith and go for a narrow home win.
Wirral v Kirby Lonsdale
Three wins on the trot have given some encouragement to the Cumbrians, but I think Wirral will be too
strong at home. A Wirral win.
