DADS AND LADS PLAY FOR THE DEVELOPMENTALS. Some of you may have been watching another match, but Wilmslow 3rds only had 12 players an hour before kick off, so yes I foolishly fulfilled my promise and told my son Mark that we would play on the same team ….. But I would need to be 10 mins on and 10 mins off , otherwise there was no way I would survive….BUT there were only 14 of us and we were away to Lymm who had a full squad of 23…. They loaned us a player and the battle commenced and at half time we were holding our own 11-5 down – ours a nice chip and chase from Mark….AND yes I was still on the field – on the field agreed, effective…. Occasionally…. perhaps… The final score, who cares, we know who had the moral Victory! Lymm rang in the changes and ran in a few tries in the middle of the second half. But then on the half way line ( note this bit..) in the last 10 our fly half saw them flat and chipped, Mark ran on, caught the ball in mid flight, and went head over heals as his opposite winger slapped in a tap tackle, he was up and off again, over came their full back, another tap tackle and Mark went down again, only to roll over and pass to out tight head prop … yes, don’t know how he got there, but the cover tackles came in and he went down a yard from the line ( this is where you need to remember where the move started from…..), the red mist was rising…in came our valiant 2 nd row ( that’s me… yes 2 nd row, it was a scratch team ) to touch the ball down on the line…… but the ref didn’t see it…was it just a dream…. We got a 5 yard scrum and were camped out on their line to the end of the match, but the try …. Well it was just not to be. And what did look like after 80 Mins…. See the picture. Finally I have to report that, no I wasn’t the oldest player on the pitch – for those of you who know Simon Muckle was playing inside centre, with his son Rick just outside him…. And I don’t feel that bad today, it’s only 20 years since I last played a full game…. Maybe… but not for 80 mins….. not in a long time. February 2011 North 1 West New Brighton 22 – 17 Wilmslow The kindest that can be said about the Wolves display against New Brighton is that they started and finished well but that the intervening seventy minutes were a huge disappointment. It‟s a sporting enigma that‟s never been solved to understand why much the same group of players can one week put on a sparkling champagne style performance and then follow it a week later with something akin to the murky contents of the cheapest bottle from the bottom shelf. Coach Giles Heagerty was in no doubt afterwards. „Whatever team you‟re playing, whether at the top or bottom of the league, the margins are fine and your attitude has to be right,‟ he said. „It had been a poor week at practice and it showed in the way we approached and played this game. We lost because we allowed the New Brighton side to control the tempo of the game, to slow it down to the pace at which they wanted to play and to disrupt our possession. It was all just very disappointing‟. „Our forwards are just not getting to grips with their opponents,‟ sighed club president David Barker during the game and consequently the backs were too often getting the ball without sufficient time or space. It didn‟t help, of course, that both first choice fly halves were unavailable, one through injury and one through work commitments and that the Wolves had to take the field without a recognised kicker. Also missing from the previous week‟s winning side was Dan Wright, Danny Kennedy and Taff Bartlem. It turned out to be an awkward day for stand in No. 10, Ricky Chadwick, who nevertheless acquitted himself without letting himself down. There is a no more whole hearted committed player in the Wolves squad than Chris Lee but it‟s asking a lot of him to play in a different position every week. So far this season, he‟s been selected at scrum half, centre three quarter, open side flanker and here he was on the right wing, perhaps indicative of the reserve strength currently available for selection. Elsewhere in the side, skipper Mike Clifford started as the blind side flanker but it wasn‟t long before he reverted to his natural second row position, when young Harrison Lewis took a knock, bringing on Alex Taylor but it was good to see Alex Donaldson back in the front row after a long lay off through injury. Yet it had all started so brightly. The Wolves moved the ball along the line with pace right from the start, stretching their opponent‟s defence, went up the field, won an indirect free kick, allowing Rob Cowley to power over for the opening score after just four minutes. But that was as good as it was going to get. From the restart, the home side slowly started to gain control. The Wolves clearly had the more incisive and quicker runners, when they got the ball but the pack was just increasingly outplayed as the New Brighton forwards made the hard yards. Three consecutive Wolves put ins at the scrum went awry and on the third occasion, New Brighton‟s Steve Dean stepped up to land a penalty. The Wilmslow lineout was no more secure than their scrum as New Brighton began to dominate possession and territory. Fortunately for the Wolves, they lacked any kind of cutting edge as at least two clear cut try scoring opportunities went begging and Dean went wide with two more penalty attempts against a stiff breeze. No matter, they were soon in the ascendency again at the start of the second half as their confidence seemed to grow. Scenting no doubt that NB were in with a chance, their Tongan centre Mafi Simione became an increasing threat, playing a pivotal part in putting left winger Gareth Simpson in at the corner. Two catch and drive tries on sixty and seventy minutes followed as the Wolves were forced to chase the game. With fifteen minutes to go, the Wolves then rang the changes, as Ben Day came on at full back, Matty King moved up to fly half, Chadwick into the centre, Brierley onto the wing and Adam Hewitt into the pack as Lee and Clancy were substituted. Two substitutes, five positional changes. The French word „chaotique‟ comes to mind as the recast line up regularly handed the initiative back with forward or dropped passes, untidy heels and, you name it, just about everything else too. Fortunately only the merest handful of supporters had bothered to make the journey to Leaseowe - not that there were many more from the home side - as otherwise with any more present, I swear, their groans of despair would have been heard back in Wilmslow itself. New Brighton were home and dry when with two minutes left on the clock, the Wolves at last put a move together for Ben Day to chase his own kick ahead, referee Simon Kirk then awarding him a penalty try, when he was illegally held back off the ball. A final flurry from the Wolves followed, Cowley charged through the centre, off loaded and a quick pass put Brierley in for a losing bonus point. It was too little and too late though. Just a bad day at the office. March Vikings 20 - 27 Leigh Developmentals 10 - 0 Old Bedians Village Spartans 10 - 29 Ravens Recent weeks have been trying for Ms. Hamilton and Duggan, who have found a shortage of players for all manner of reasons– leaving the area for work reasons, injuries, international duty and unavailability– making it difficult to raise sides. They deserve considerable recognition for keeping their show on the road and hopefully, now that the colts season has effectively ended, eligible players from that age group wanting to play will now get their opportunity. ‘Magna est Diligentia et Praevalebit’, as Geoff Knight would say. Neither Tim Medwell nor Matt Hamilton had much or anything to say about their team performances last weekend, so it was left to Geoff Knight to entertain us with his report of the Ravens against the Village Spartans, once again with liberal use of Latin to make his points. This has had an obvious effect on our president, I note, as it has inspired him to confuse us all in this week’s match notes with a quotation supposedly extracted from his Latin primer. In fact, it’s his old school motto, which all Lorettonians will have known since they were small boys in short trousers. That reminds me that it’s the annual Calcutta Cup bash tomorrow, an occasion when certain kinds of gentlemen tend to wear their old school ties, so don’t be surprised if our president is seen forsaking his club tie for his Fettesian Lorettonian one.
