Providing care for uninsured families ... building healthy communities
February was National Heart Health Month and the U.S.
Division of Health and Human Services has started an
initiative called Million Hearts TM , to prevent 1 million heart
attacks and strokes over five years. The Clearwater Free
Clinic shares in this effort by providing comprehensive cardiac
and primary care services to the uninsured population of
upper Pinellas County. Dr. Paul Kudelko fully endorses the
CFC’s Cardiac Program. As a CFC board member and
volunteer physician, he states, “In the U.S., heart disease
remains the number one killer of both men and women.
Detection, prevention, and treatment are essential to prevent
early heart attacks, strokes and other vascular complications.
The Clearwater Free Clinic provides services that accomplish
these goals.”
One of four CFC volunteer cardiologists, Dr. Kudelko, has
been well aware of the existence of the Clinic for over 20
years. “Being retired, I enjoy spending my time giving back
to the community. There is great satisfaction in working with
patients who are so appreciative for the care they receive and
working with a group of dedicated and concerned volunteers.”
Clinic volunteers, including cardiologists, primary care
clinicians, nutritionists, pharmacists, and nurses provide
evaluation and education to improve patient care. Generous

grant awards have allowed for the purchase of specialized
equipment such as EKGs, Holter monitors (24 hour
ambulatory EKG), and vascular Doppler Ultrasound for
diagnosis and prevention. Donated community services make
available laboratory studies, advanced cardiac studies, and
education. Most importantly the Clinic med room provides
the majority of medications needed to treat the majority of
risk factors. The Clearwater Free Clinic continues its efforts in
promoting healthy lifestyles and is launching a new Wellness
Program in April 2013.
As Dr. Kudelko says “Heart disease tends to put fear in
most Americans, but this can be reduced by modifying
the risk factors and seeking professional health care.” A
major goal of the Clearwater Free Clinic is to promote
healthy cardiovascular lifestyles, to minimize patient use of
emergency rooms and hospital stays. Through the Cardiac
Program, the Clearwater Free Clinic is doing its part to help
the hearts of the uninsured!
The Clearwater Free Clinic provides evaluation for potential
cardiovascular disease, care for existing cardiovascular
disease, and the precursors to cardiovascular disease,
such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol,
obesity and various lifestyle concerns including smoking,
inactivity, and diet.
FLU VACCINE
An early and aggressive start to the flu season has sickened
thousands of people in the Tampa Bay area. According to the
CDC, receiving the flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the
chance of getting the seasonal flu and spreading it to others.
The lack of regular medical care makes the uninsured one of
the most vulnerable populations to contract the flu. Thanks
to Americares, a nonprofit disaster relief organization, over
100 doses of flu vaccine were donated to the Clearwater Free
Clinic and have been distributed to high risk clinic patients with
chronic illnesses.

The 10th annual Martinis and Matisse was a great
success. Thanks to unprecedented community support
at Martinis and Matisse, the Clearwater Free Clinic was
able to raise 25% of the funds needed to provide medical
care for the uninsured in upper Pinellas County for 2013.

KIDS & KUBS GIVES TO THE CFC
A NOT SO ORDINARY SOFTBALL LEAGUE
For over 80 years the Kids & Kubs organization has been playing
softball 3 times a week during their regular season. This is not a
regular softball league, however. Players must be at least 74 years
of age, they dress in white shirts with black bow ties, and the money
they raise through their organization is distributed to local charities.
The Clearwater Free Clinic was a lucky recipient at a recent game
where Executive Director, Jeannie Shapiro, spoke to the crowd about
the Clinic and its services.

LOU GALDIERI
Currently serving as Chief Operating
Officer of Mease Dunedin Hospital
and Mease Countryside Hospital,
the Clearwater Free Clinic welcomes
our newest board member, Lou
Galdieri. Mr. Galdieri began his
career as a nurse more than 25
years ago. At Pennsylvania Hospital
in Philadelphia, he held a variety of
leadership and nursing positions
including Clinical Director and
Patient and Staff Relations roles.
He has been published in several
professional journals and is a member of the American College of
Healthcare Executives and the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives.
“I am very excited to join the Board of the Clearwater Free Clinic,” he
said. “Our mission at BayCare is to improve the health of all we serve by
providing the highest quality, and most compassionate care possible.
It was a natural fit for me to volunteer my time with an organization that
has a similar mission and excellent reputation in our community.” The
Clearwater Free Clinic is thrilled to have Mr. Galdieri join our Board of
Directors and we look forward to his innovative ideas.

Congress has extended the IRA Charitable
Rollover through 2013 allowing those that are
70½ or older, to give up to $100,000 from their
IRA accounts directly to qualified charities, like the
Clearwater Free Clinic, without paying income tax
on that amount.

Now that I have “aged out” through
turning 65 and can no longer come here,
I just wanted to thank you for taking
such good care of me when I lost my
insurance. I now have Medicare effective
this month. When I first came to you
I was embarrassed but you treated me
with compassion and dignity. My change
in circumstances made it impossible to
pay in full, but you treated me as if my
small donations were just as important.

therapists and social workers. We also need non-medical personnel to answer phones, make
appointments, file charts, fax, sort medications, etc.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT – DEMETRA PANTELIS
The Clearwater Free Clinic is lucky to have an amazing group of volunteers. One of our most helpful volunteers
is Demetra Pantellis, a student in the medical program of Palm Harbor University. Demetra learned of the Clinic
through volunteer physicians that attend her church, and stopped in to see what it was all about. For the past two
years, Demetra has been a delightful addition to the CFC Volunteer staff. In addition to managing a demanding
school schedule and extra-curricular projects, Demetra volunteers once a week, filing, faxing and hunting for
charts. Always upbeat and energetic, she is always willing to take on special projects and extra work.
“The Clinic is a great resource for a lot of uninsured people in the community and before I volunteered here, I had
no idea how many people needed the services. It is comforting to know that there is a place like the Clinic that
can help so many people,” Demetra said.
Demetra has always been interested in medicine, but while volunteering at the CFC she has observed, firsthand,
what goes on in a doctor’s office. She has been able to learn about various medical fields and talk to
clinic specialists regarding their work. Currently Salutorian of her class, Demetra’s goal is to become a Pediatric
Oncologist.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORDINARY AND
EXTRAORDINARY IS JUST THAT LITTLE EXTRA.
The Clearwater Free Clinic staff makes a point of saying “thank you” to our volunteers each and every day, for
without their kind hearts and assistance the clinic could not function.
At The Clinic’s Annual Volunteer Luncheon, these
wonderful people are recognized and celebrated
for their extraordinary accomplishments. It is one
of the ways the CFC board & staff are able to
demonstrate how much the volunteers are valued
and appreciated for their service to the uninsured
families living in our community.
