THE CFC AND THE AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE ACT
Why the community needs the Clinic more than ever
Perhaps you are wondering whether there
will be a need for The Clearwater Free Clinic
following the implementation of the Affordable
Care Act starting in 2014. The answer is
undeniably “Yes!” The Congressional Budget
Office’s latest estimate is that 30 million people
in our country – 1 in 10 Americans – will remain
uninsured following the full implementation of
the Act. This includes significant numbers of
Pinellas County families who are our neighbors,
friends, and relatives, and those whose work
we depend on to support our local economy.
While we are continuing to monitor state and
federal efforts around health care reform, we
are convinced that nonprofit, volunteer-driven,
community-based efforts such as ours must
remain strong, vibrant, and sustainable for
years to come. Thank you for your continued

A patient story of how the Clinic helped him
to be cancer free
Marty had a full time job as a painter
and press operator. He was provided
health insurance through his work
and life was good. Then Marty
became increasingly tired and weak…
so much so that he was unable to
function at work and ultimately lost
his job and insurance with it. Marty
knew he needed to see a doctor but
without insurance or the funds to pay
privately he did not know what to do
or where to go. A friend of Marty’s
recommended the Clearwater Free Clinic. Marty became a CFC patient
and was seen by the Clinic’s nurse practitioner, Jan Humphreys who
ultimately made the diagnosis of Lymphoma…a cancer of the lymphatic
system. “Jan really went above and beyond to check up on me. She
would call me after hours to make sure I was doing okay.”

Through the Clinic’s community partnerships and services, Marty’s
lymphoma was successfully treated and today he is cancer free. Marty
will continue to require ongoing monthly surveillance, at least for a
while, just to make sure he remains cancer free. “The Clearwater Free
Clinic saves lives. They saved my life. If it wasn’t for them helping me
out and Jan going above and beyond I wouldn’t be here.” Whenever
Marty comes to the CFC for an appointment, he brings flowers to the
volunteers and staff, just to show them how much their help means to
him. “The quality of care I receive is better than I have ever had before.
You can tell the volunteers and staff really love what they do because
they go out of their way to follow up with their patients.”
Marty’s story and his deep appreciation for the Clearwater Free
Clinic, volunteers and staff is similar to so many others families in our
community. The CFC’s mission to deliver comprehensive medical care
to uninsured families through volunteerism and community partnerships
works to keep our communities strong… and it works to help those
who need it most.

LETTER FROM PRESIDENT
Thank you for your interest in the Clearwater Free Clinic! We could
not accomplish our mission without the strong support of our
volunteers and community partners.
There are a lot of exciting things taking place at your “Clinic”. Most
recently, we dedicated the annex to honor the memory of Valerie Nisk.
The Nisk family continues to amaze us all with their continued support
spanning some 30 years! We are proud to finally have the opportunity
to formalize that memory.
On May 1st we transitioned to a new leadership team. We are very
excited to have Dottie Fischer serving as our Treasurer and Cyndi Heller
as our Secretary. I am also very proud to serve the clinic as your new
President. We look forward to the contributions of the new team as
well as a very strong Board of Directors and dedicated staff.
Speaking of the Board of Directors, we have recently worked with
Mr. Mark Cruise, an outside consultant to put together our Strategic
Plan for the next two years. The Board has worked very diligently to
prioritize objectives and goals to move the Clinic forward in the near
and long-term.
Many have asked, “How does the Affordable Healthcare Act affect the Clearwater Free Clinic” Without going
on and on, we feel the patient load of the clinic will be unaffected by the implementation of “Obamacare”. We
feel there are many gaps in coverage parameters, and eligibility issues that will leave a significant segment of
the population without affordable healthcare options. In addition, many statistics indicate there will also be a
large number of employers that will “opt out”
of compliance with the act, and many eligible
employees that will not conform or participate in
the program.
The bottom line we feel is demand for our services
will continue to be strong and our role in the
community will continue to be greatly needed!
We hope to report on some new programs
and new directions in the very near future. It
is a very exciting time at the Clearwater Free
Clinic. Please continue to support our efforts
by volunteering and financially supporting a
clinic that has served the uninsured with quality
compassionate healthcare since 1977. If you

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH
GIVES THE CFC A FRESH FACE
The Clearwater Free Clinic would like to extend a very special thank
you to the members of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church that
lent a hand to help “Clean up the Clinic.” They did an amazing job
helping pull weeds, re-mulch and scour the inside of the Clinic.
Through acts of kindness like
theirs, the CFC is able to have a
beautiful facility and make sure
that donations go directly to
services for uninsured families.
THE CFC’S NEWEST BOARD MEMBER
RYAN BONTRAGER, CPA
The Clearwater Free Clinic’s board of
directors recently welcomed Ryan Bontrager
as their newest member. Ryan is a CPA
with Warren Averett in Tampa, specializing
in financial statements and audits. Ryan’s
first contact with the Clearwater Free Clinic
occurred several years ago while working
for Lewis Birch & Ricardo, CPA. Ryan was
assigned to work on Clinic’s yearly audit.
“I was able to see firsthand the level of care that was being
provided to Clinic patients through strong community
partnerships. I really like the volunteers and staff and think
what they do for the community is remarkable.” Ryan’s
expertise and familiarity with nonprofits and financials will be
invaluable as the Clinic board navigates the new health care
reform.
“I am excited to be part of such a great organization.
Allowing people to live healthier lives helps them return to
work or school and really helps our entire community.” We
look forward to the insight and knowledge Ryan will bring to
the board.

VALERIE NISK ANNEX
GRAND OPENING CEREMONY
On Thursday, May 9, 2013 the Clearwater Free Clinic
formally opened and dedicated the Clearwater Free Clinic’s
Valerie Nisk Annex. The Annex is located at 705 N. Ft.
Harrison Ave. and became part of the Clearwater Free Clinic
campus in December 2010 through a generous gift donated
by Ronald & Alice Nisk, in loving memory of their daughter
Valerie. The CFC board members, staff, and various city
officials gathered together for a ribbon cutting and short
presentation. CFC President, Bruce Livingston and CFC
board member, Stephen Bouton recognized and thanked
the entire Nisk Family for their continued commitment
to the Clearwater Free Clinic and the underserved in our
communities.
The Valerie Nisk Annex is a multipurpose facility that serves
as an extension of the Clearwater Free Clinic, enhancing care
and services provided to Clinic patients. New prospective
clinic patients are qualified and introduced to clinic services
at the Annex, which also provides office space and meeting
rooms for patient education classes, and wellness programs,
as well as an area for volunteer training and development.
CFC SUMMER PEDIATRIC PROGRAM
Through the summer months, school, camp and sports
physicals will only be provided during the regular Pediatric Clinic
on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Pediatric
sick visits will continue to be scheduled as needed throughout
the week.
