Those who struggle tomeet the demands of overhead, will oftenpay themselves last…if at all, placing healthinsurance at the very bottom of the needs list. This was the case with Nancy, the owner of asmall local restaurant who has worked manylong, hard days to build her business. Theextra funds to buy insurance were just notavailable and Nancy needed medical treatment.Nancy suffers from two serious chronic healthissues, Atrial Fibrillation, and COPD (ChronicObstructive Pulmonary Disease), both requiringsurveillance from medical specialists and dailymedications. Although Nancy struggles withkeeping her doors open and operating hersmall restaurant, she believes in giving backto the community. When she was askedto donate her famous bread pudding to theClearwater Free Clinic’s major fundraiser, Martinis & Matisse, shedid not hesitate to say “yes”. It was there, at Martinis & Matisse thatNancy first learned about the services providedby the Clearwater Free Clinic and how theClinic could help people like her. “The Clinicdoes tremendous things,” Nancy said. “I havereceived better health care at the ClearwaterFree Clinic than 20 years with health insurance. The quality of care is excellent and they followup to make sure I am doing okay. I am justthankful they are here so that people like mecan get the help that they need.”Many other patients, like Nancy, cannotafford health insurance but don’t qualify forgovernment assistance. This is why the Clinic’smission is so critical to the community. “TheClinic does tremendous things. Without theClinic, people could become critically ill andend up in the emergency room or worse,”says Nancy. Through Clinic services and ourcommunity partners, Nancy has received themedical care, medications and educationnecessary to improve the quality of her health. The work involved running a small business isstill challenging… but much easier when you have your health… andthe Clearwater Free Clinic.VISIT US AT WWW.CLEARWATERFREECLINIC.ORG5

Based on a diabeticprevention program from the Center for Disease Control, the Clinic’s “Less isMore” program encourages patients to take control of their health. The healthylifestyle program focuses on proper nutrition, the importance and integration ofmoderate exercise, identifying and reducing stressors and the importance ofestablishing a caring support system. The goal of the program is for patients tolose 10% of their body weight by establishing healthy lifelong changes. With thesupport of a few generous donors, the CFC was able to make reaching healthand weight loss goals a little easier, by providing each participant with helpfulnutrition tools, a step meter and set of exercise bands.Paul is one of the Clinic patients who have had great success with the “Less isMore” program. Through his participation in this program, Paul has reduced hisweight from 324 lbs to 303 lbs in just 16 weeks…and he is still losing! “I payattention to what I eat and make sure I get three good meals a day watching thecalories and fat intake. I cut out all sodas and juices and stick to water and tryto stay away from fast food and anything fried. I have also started eating a lotmore fruits and vegetables.”The weight loss is only one of the great outcomes Paul has seen from theprogram. Because of his lifestyle changes and weight loss, he has been ableto cut out several medications to treat his high cholesterol and blood pressure.Paul says he will continue on the path of “Less is More” even after the classofficially ends next March, as he has experienced firsthand the benefits of livinga healthy lifestyle. The CFC is grateful to the wellness program team, Nan Jensen RD, LDN fromthe Pinellas County Extension of the University of Florida and devoted clinicvolunteers, Claire Geheb and Carol Toscani.Paul’s success story, along with many others, is one example of the Clinic’songoing mission to contribute to the health of our community.VISIT US AT WWW.CLEARWATERFREECLINIC.ORG7
