A Quarterly Update On Family Service Of The Piedmont, Inc.
Agency Completes Five-Year Strategic Plan
For the past eight months, a committee consisting of
Family Service staff, board members and foundation
trustees has been considering the agency’s current services
and position in the community, and developing a
strategic plan to guide Family Service of the Piedmont’s
growth and direction over the next five years.
The process began in November 2006 with a presentation
to agency staff by strategic planning professional
Debbie Palat of The Lattitude Group, which specializes
in helping organizations plan and position themselves
for their future. Staff brainstormed Family Service’s current
strengths and weaknesses in their own divisions, to
get a feel for where the agency was and what opportunities
might exist to work with. After the staff input
was consolidated, it was sent to a special planning
meeting of the Family Service board for their own
brainstorming session.
“The understanding and value placed on strategic planning,
the dedication of the core team, and the involvement
of key players at all levels – board, leadership and
staff – were all positive to the planning process at
Family Service,” Palat said. One challenge was the complexity
of the organization, with so many different programs
and services being offered.
Palat continued as facilitator of the Strategic Planning
Committee, made up of agency board and foundation
members and staff of all levels, and chaired by Family
Service board member Elizabeth Finch. This committee
met for a total of twelve sessions over the next few
months.
The process was lengthy but worthwhile, Finch
says: “because of the dedication of so many
New Team Targets Area’s Homeless
▲ Mitch McGee, Housing Support Team Coordinator
A new collaborative effort funded by The Guilford
Center between Family Service of the Piedmont, the
Greensboro Housing Coalition and Open Door
Ministries in High Point has been established to help
homeless individuals with mental health issues to find
housing, access the services they need to be successful,
and become integrated into the community.
The Housing Support Team is headed by Mitch McGee
at Family Service, along with housing counselors Dale
people in this organization, Family Service of the
Piedmont now has a document which will guide
us in a direction to become even greater as we
help families in our community.”
A crucial phase of the process was to gather input from
Family Service’s partner agencies and stakeholders in the
community. Representatives from organizations including
local officials, law enforcement, United Ways and
other non-profit agencies discussed emerging issues that
affect families and children in Guilford County, and
Family Service’s role in addressing those issues.
The final plan was approved by the board in June, and
went into effect July 1st. A formal review of the
agency’s progress after three years will begin in April
2010.
Joyce of the Greensboro Housing Coalition and
Raymond Payne of Open Door Ministries. The team
also plans to hire three part-time “Peer Support
Specialists” – people who have successfully dealt with
their own recovery from homelessness, mental illness or
substance addiction, who will assist and mentor clients
in the program.
This new effort is made possible through a grant of
$644,280 from the North Carolina Division of Mental
Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse
Services, which initially runs for 26 months as of May
1st. The program has also received additional
funding thanks to a $50,000 grant from the
Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.
A collaborative proposal by the three partner agencies
won a competitive bidding process to receive the grant
monies from the state. “The timing was very good,”
says McGee, “since the community was just finishing
up a Task Force on Ending Chronic Homelessness in
Guilford County, so many partnerships had been well
established. And the Task Force was headed up by
County officials, City officials (Greensboro and High
Point) and the two United Ways – so there was a lot of
energy and interest around this issue.”
A Letter From The
President & CEO
I have a quote by Helen
Keller on the wall outside
of my office which
states, “Alone we can do
so little; together we
can do so much.” This
statement continues to
inspire me and reflects
the synergy that was evident
within the agency’s
Strategic Planning Committee—made up of
staff and Board members—in completing
the framework for our five-year Strategic
Plan. This plan focuses on five critical goal
categories which spotlight maintaining our
financial stability, controlled program
growth, improved marketing and development,
nurturing an exceptional workplace
for staff, and reaching out to the
Hispanic/Latino community and other
emerging populations through culturally
competent services [see story on front
page].
One way Family Service continues to bring
services to those who need them most is by
identifying opportunities to collaborate
with other local organizations. Our newest
partnership, with the Greensboro Housing
Coalition and Open Door Ministries, is a
good example of this. Together, our combined
Housing Support Team will better
serve the area’s homeless with serious mental
health problems [see story on front
page].
We know we are doing well when we see
Furnitureland Rotary Club and our own
Guild of Family & Children’s Service, as well
as the numerous donors to our Annual
supporters—there simply isn’t room
Most of all, I am grateful for Family
Service’s hard-working and committed staff,
who daily go above and beyond to bring
much-needed services to families and children
in need. I don’t think any of us would
be able to our jobs so effectively without
Joe Martin, who as IT Manager provides us
with the technological tools and know-how
that make our work possible [see story on
I am excited about the limitless potential for
changes that are happening as we move forward
in our mission to build safe and
New Team Targets Area’s
Homeless Continued from page 1.
According to that Task Force’s report, on January
24, 2007 there were over 1,100 homeless people
in Guilford County. Over 200 of these people
had been homeless for more than a year, and
some for as long as twenty years. Last year, 243
people moved from transitional living facilities
into permanent housing, but for others homelessness
has become a chronic condition.
Long-term, chronic homelessness is often associated
with mental illness or substance addiction.
Accordingly, the Housing Support Team’s primary
focus will be on homeless people with
serious mental health or substance abuse disorders.
These individuals are frequently identified
as “high use” repeaters in the various institutions,
such as psychiatric units, emergency
rooms, and jails.
“Currently, about 10% of homeless folk are using
up a large percentage of the resources,” McGee
explains. “This program targets these individuals
directly.” By helping such “high use” individuals
achieve stability, more resources will be made
available to assist others.
Referrals to the program will come through hospitals,
law enforcement and social service agencies,
McGee said. To be eligible, clients must be
homeless at the time they are enrolled, or else
living in a homeless shelter or transitional program.
The team will also meet with potential
clients prior to discharge from jail or hospital, if
it is believed that they will be homeless upon
discharge.
There are already 14 clients enrolled in the program.
Ultimately, the Housing Support Team
will serve upwards of 75 people.
that together brought awareness of Family
Service’s programs to more than 600 people, and
raised over $68,000 for Greensboro children and
families.
“The Guild truly embodies the spirit of fundraising
and friend-raising,” Bonney said, “We are so
very blessed to have Guild members serve as
ambassadors for our agency!”
Greensboro Oyster Roast a Night to Remember
Fine weather, good food and the spacious
grounds of Steve and Pam Hassenfelt’s
Irving Park home drew 450 people to the
4th Annual Greensboro Oyster Roast on
April 21st. This signature spring fundraiser
for Family & Children’s Service of Greater
Greensboro Foundation, which raises money
to support the work of Family Service of the
Piedmont in Greensboro, continues to grow
in popularity and success, thanks to a diligent
and dedicated volunteer committee and
the generous support of the Greensboro
community.
Under and around a large, open tent which
gave the party a cool, al fresco feel, guests
enjoyed the music of Jerry Chapman and
the Mediocre Bad Guys, while sampling
oysters and other tasty treats provided by
Pepper Moon Catering. At the end of the
Event Co-chairs Missy Akin and Elizabeth
Rankin credit the event’s success to the hard
work of committee members and staff, and
the generosity of sponsors and hosts. “Pam
and Steve Hassenfelt were so generous with
of everything we had so much fun putting it
“I really enjoyed being a part of the event,”
agreed Rankin,“I think we reached a new
We were very thankful for the generous
individuals who gave donations again this
In May, staff voted to recognize Martin with
Staff members recommending Martin for the
Levolor Kirsch Gives Shelter a Facelift
Staff at Levolor Kirsch have adopted
Carpenter House as their company project,
reorganizing the attic space and donating a
bounty of blinds, furnishings and gifts to
the shelter.
The attic at High Point’s shelter for abused
women was being used as a storage space
for donated items – including clothing,
shoes and personal items for the women
and children who stay there. Over time,
the space had become a mess, making it
difficult for staff to effectively handle donations.
Then, Shelter Supervisor Charlee McVearry
explains, she received a call from Levolor’s
Paige Adams, looking for a project the
company’s employees could work on. “I
explained that we needed our attic reorganized
to make our donations more manageable,”
McVearry says, “Paige came out to
see the attic and then brought back a team
of about 15 people, including engineers
who virtually redesigned our attic space.”
The attic organization project had started
with the help of local church groups,
McVearry said. “Mt. Gilead United
Methodist Church installed rods to hang
clothes on and began the sorting process.
They were followed by Emmanuel
Lutheran Church’s Teen Group who continued
sorting, folding and hanging clothes.
Levolor took over from there.”
Because the company is a division of
Newell Rubbermaid, they were able to
provide a large number of storage totes
donated by Rubbermaid Home Products to
organize items more efficiently. Levolor
staff sorted and labeled donations in
each tote.
Overall, the development of the strategic plan
will help to position Family Service well for the
future, Palat says, “because of the involvement of
all levels within the organization throughout all
phases of the process (strategic thinking, planning
and implementation). By doing this, you
have a team who are not only a part of the creation
of the plan but who are now invested in
the complete success of the implementation of
the plan.”
Strategic Plan Overview
Family Service’s new strategic plan is structured
around five Critical Goal Categories, each with
corresponding success indicators and key objectives
to help track progress and guide agency
activities toward the goal:
SUMMER 2007
A Quarterly Update On Family Service Of The Piedmont, Inc.
Not content with that, the volunteers also
brought four carloads of donations to the
shelter, including kitchen supplies, hair
accessories and baby items donated by
Caphalon, Goody, and Graco, all Newell
Rubbermaid Companies. Employees are
also collecting toiletries for the shelter
when they travel. “The next thing I knew,
“McVearry says, “they sent someone over to
measure all the windows in order to make
Agency Completes Five-Year Strategic Plan Continued from page 1.
1 – Assure financial stability/funding development
Objectives include growing unrestricted funding
through improved fund raising, diversifying revenue
sources and streamlining the integration of
the agency with its two foundations. One success
indicator is the establishment of an agency
reserve, by ensuring annual income exceeds
expenses.
2 – Develop branding/marketing
Objectives include improved community education
about the agency’s services, a broader client
base and increased advertising opportunities.
Success is measured by number of client referrals,
and by survey results.
3 – Enhance staff/human resources/communication
Objectives include improved communication
throughout the agency, development of employ-
▲ After: Items are organized and labeled in storage bins
ee training and wellness programs, and streamlining
organizational efficiency. Success indicators
include reduced staff turnover and
improved employee survey results.
4 – Strategically grow programs
Objectives are to re-examine the agency’s core
competencies and determine the strategic direction
of each, and to create a controlled growth
strategy for the agency as a whole. Success is
measured by the quality of programs and services
as deemed by best practice standards.
5 – Identify and serve emerging populations
with an initial focus on Hispanic/Latino population
Objectives include identifying cultural needs
and heightening cultural awareness within the
agency, and improving partnerships with community
groups. Success indicators are client satisfaction
surveys, as well as number of
Hispanic/Latino clients served.
