A Quarterly Update On Family Service Of The Piedmont, Inc.
The Strength to Move On: A Survivor’s Story
Not long ago, Lois Williams was imprisoned in an
abusive marriage built on fear. A victim of childhood
abuse for much of her youth, Lois suffered
into adulthood in relationships filled with cruelty
and violence. At Family Service of the Piedmont,
Lois found the support she needed to escape and
begin a new life.
Lois met her husband through a blind date. “That
first night he threatened me and told me if I didn’t
do what he said that he’d kill me,”
she says. “He proceeded to assault
and rape me. Nothing like that had
ever happened to me before. I had
no clue as to what was going on.”
“I stayed with him because of fear,”
Lois admits. “He had that intimidating
hold on me.” Four years
later, Lois became pregnant and
married her abuser. “He was in the
Sheriff’s department at the time and
wanted stature and standing in the
community,” she says.
Lois’ abusive marriage lasted
twenty-two years. “I endured it because
my daughters were too important
to me and I didn’t want to
uproot them,” she says. But finally
she had had enough. “I was exhausted, I was tired,
and I started planning my escape. I began making a
safety plan.”
Lois Williams found safety and escape from
violence at Family Service of the Piedmont.
Lois fled to Greensboro as soon as her youngest
daughter was settled at college. She had been offered
a place to stay by a High School acquaintance.
But that man also turned out to be controlling and
abusive, just like the husband she had fled from. “I
had jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire,”
she says.
Volunteers Revamp Women’s Shelters
Family Service’s domestic violence shelters saw a lot
of improvements this summer. Clara House in
Greensboro and Carpenter House in High Point
each received an extreme makeover by volunteers
from two local corporate groups.
First, two groups of BB&T volunteers adopted the
shelters for their company’s Lighthouse Project. They
completely overhauled the outdoor areas including
custom-built wooden play sets at both shelters. The
volunteers also created relaxing seating areas for
women to enjoy themselves outdoors. Additional
donations included a bike rack, ping pong table, riding
toys, and a basketball goal.
Another BB&T group went shopping for Clara House
and donated a host of items, including a brand new
TV and DVD player for the living room area, educational
video games, comforters and bed linens,
housewares and storage containers. “All of BB&T’s
efforts are greatly appreciated,” said Shelter Services
Coordinator Joanne DeTiere.
Continued on page 2
Resolving not to repeat her last bad relationship, Lois
planned to leave. “When my new boyfriend found
out he blocked the door, threw me on the couch,
and proceeded to strangle me,” she says. Lois escaped
and sought refuge at a nearby school, where
she spoke with a social worker about her options.
Lois was referred to Family Service of the Piedmont.
She lived at the women’s shelter for about a year.
“The staff was such a great group of people who
worked to support me,” she remembers. “I honestly
could not have done it without Family
Service. I have no idea where I would
have stayed; I probably would have
been sleeping in my van.” Lois used
her time at the shelter to get back on
her feet financially, and to confront
the issues that surrounded her from a
lifetime of abuse and mistreatment.
“Family Service made sure I had the
assistance I needed,” she says. “I was
offered an abundance of programs
and supportive services during my
stay at the shelter. Crossroads [the
agency’s support group for women
who are survivors of domestic violence]
was very supportive and encouraging.
That gave me the chance
to be around other women that I had
something in common with and
could actually talk to.” Lois remains close and keeps
up with a number of these women today.
The shelter staff and other residents gave Lois the
kind of encouragement she had rarely experienced.
“If you felt like you didn’t have anything that would
keep you going, they kept you going,” she says.
“Family Service has people that genuinely care. That
makes all the difference in the world. “
Message From The
President & CEO
Summertime and the living
is easy…or, so the
song says. Many of us can
look back at the last couple
of months and fondly
remember family vacations,
weekend cookouts
and other relaxing days
enjoying the many opportunities
that summer
brings. Unfortunately, for
many of the clients that
we serve, life’s struggles diminish the joys of
summer. You probably read the news stories
about a tragic triple homicide in Greensboro
recently, linked to domestic violence. The incident
illustrates just how much work still
needs to be done to end domestic violence and
to educate the public about resources available
in our community (such as our domestic violence
shelters, Clara House and Carpenter
House) that can save a life.
Every day, Family Service staff work with men,
women and children threatened by violence in
their own homes. You can read two examples
in this newsletter. Our front page tells the
story of one woman who came to Family Service
to escape a long-term abusive marriage.
Also, on page 5, our recent CARE Award winner
Angie Parker describes how she helps
clients escaping family violence through each
step of the process – from the initial crisis call,
to acquiring a protective court order, to referrals
for counseling, shelter, or other resources.
Angie exemplifies the dedication that all Family
Service staff have for their clients and their
safety. In countless ways each day, they help
prevent the threat of violence from erupting
into tragedy in the lives of the families they
serve.
I am excited to say that Family Service has
started a new therapy group for children,
aged five to seventeen, who have been exposed
to violence. We know that witnessing violence
in their homes or communities can have a
traumatic effect on children. Research shows
that for healing to begin, it is important to acknowledge
the trauma and encourage children
to talk about it. The new group will enable
children who have been exposed to violence to
become less afraid, less isolated, and feel safe
again.
None of the many programs Family Service offers
would be possible without the support
that we receive from people like you in our
three communities. Our fundraisers in High
Point, Greensboro and Jamestown have all broken
records this year. You can read about these
events throughout this newsletter. I am immensely
grateful to all the volunteers who
helped plan and organize such spectacular
events, and all who contributed. We honestly
could not do it without you and I would like
to thank you on behalf of our clients and staff
for your generosity.
Speaking of which, I am thrilled to announce
that this year’s Greensboro Greek Festival will
once again support Clara House. This will be
the third year the popular event has donated
proceeds our shelter. I am very thankful to
Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox
Church for their continued generosity. Mark
your calendars for the Greek Festival, September
16th-18th!
Finally, we have an immediate need for donations
of fans of all kinds. In this sweltering
summer, many of our clients are without air
conditioning, and a simple fan can make all the
difference. Please help these families beat the
summer heat by donating new or gently-used
fans to Family Service. You can drop off your
from Syngenta Crop Protection gave
their time to create a raised container garden
at Carpenter House. Volunteers planted fresh
vegetables including tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers,
pumpkin, and basil. “It was hot,
but everyone worked hard and we had fun
working together,” said Syngenta’s Ruhi
“Together, these projects have greatly improved
Greensboro Oyster Roast : Biggest and Best Ever
The Greensboro Oyster Roast on April 29
wasn’t just a terrific party; it was the largest and
most successful fundraiser Family Service of the
Piedmont has ever had.
A record turnout of 720 guests enjoyed the food,
music and festivities at Bonnie and Bynum
Hunter’s home. Around the large tents provided
by Grand Rental Station, attendees ate oysters
on the lawn and other edibles from Pepper
Moon Catering, enjoyed the company of friends
around the beautiful candlelit swimming pool,
shopped for jewelry on display by Schiffman’s
(who donated a portion of their sales all that
weekend) or danced the night away to the music
of The Magnificents.
The event surpassed all expectations and raised
proceeds of more than $141,000 to support programs
of Family Service in Greensboro.
Oyster Roast Co-Chairs Kim Holleman and
Daniela Helms thanked the Hunters for playing
host to the event. “The Oyster Roast was successful
because Bonnie and Bynum Hunter so generously
shared their beautiful property – the pool,
gazebo, paved areas and lawn,” Helms said. “The
location was a big part of our success,” agreed
Holleman. “Another was the wonderful level of
corporate sponsorship – we had so many people
Chair Shirley Spears, and home host Bonnie McElveen-Hunter
willing to go the sponsor route.” Holleman particularly
thanked honorary chair Shirley Spears
for her part in helping to marshal support. “We
are so grateful to Shirley. Her involvement was
key to our incredible level of success this year,”
she said.
“We were so fortunate to have a dedicated group
leading our fundraising efforts, not to mention
the generosity of our donors especially during a
tough economy,” added Helms. In particular,
Grand Rental Station who donated the tents and
furnishings. “They really helped create an attractive
and high-quality feel to the evening,” she
noted.
Jamestown Pig Pickin’ Returns to Magnolia Farm
The Jamestown Pig Pickin’ returned for its
second year on Saturday, July 30th. The
fundraiser found even greater success this year
thanks to presenting sponsorTCDI. About 400
people attended the event at the historic Magnolia
Farm, the Jamestown home of George and
Jenny Ragsdale. Dr. Don Cameron, President
Emeritus of Guilford Technical Community College,
and his wife Jayne served as Honorary
Chairs.
Under and around the large tent provided by
Grand Central Station, the “shabby chic”
themed Pig Pickin’ featured pork and chicken
prepared by BBQ Joe’s and Southern Roots
Restaurant. Above and Beyond Catering provided
delicious sides and desserts, while Natty
Greene’s Brewing Co. provided beer. Live music
by Turpentine Shine was the perfect background
to entertain guests.
A popular silent auction, led by Doug Susong,
featured a rose garden installation by Witherspoon
Rose Culture, a Slane and Slane silver
bracelet, and a kayak “made in Jamestown” donated
by Get Outdoors. The auction alone raised
an astonishing $6,200, which helped total funds
raised reach more than $42,000 – almost double
what was raised last year.
SUMMER 2011
Family Service of the Piedmont
and the Greensboro
community were saddened
to learn of the passing
of David Edmond
Wesley Schlosser, son of
Rebecca and Mike
Schlosser, this June 2 at the
age of 25.
David recently graduated
BS in Computer Science, and a minor in Psychology
and Mathematics. Previously, David
attended Greensboro Day School where he
was co-captain of the wrestling team and a
member of the National Honor Society.
David will be remembered as a loving and
caring son and brother. Although he struggled
with bipolar disorder, he lived life to the
fullest, enjoying a wide array of friends and a
One person can make a difference. You never
know when something you say or do will
make a profound change in the life of someone
who is secretly hurting or afraid. This is
why our work with Family Service of the Piedmont is so crucial, for we offer
children and families in need concrete programs, support, and tools for change
to build healthier, happier, and safer lives.
This year, the Clara House and Carpenter House Shelters for battered women
and their children, our Children’s Advocacy Centers for sexually abused children,
our in-home Family Preservation program, the 24-hour crisis line, Domestic
Violence Intervention Program for batterers, and Healthy Start were all
programs which faced reduced services due to funding cuts. Thanks to countless
volunteer hours, we broke Greensboro’s fundraising records and were political
activists at a crucial time in continuing the work of Family Service. Next
year will be another critical time, and you are needed!
As a twenty-year volunteer for the Agency, the opportunity to serve as the
2010-2011 Chair of Family Service of Greensboro Foundation was a joy and a
blessing. I am grateful for the commitment, generosity, and open hearts of
each Foundation Trustee, Guild member, and the many fund-raising and
friend-raising volunteers and sponsors who made this year of need a tremendous
success. At each meeting, I challenged all to act boldly with Enthusiasm,
Passion, and Responsibility and to be daily ambassadors for Family Service.
Thank you for your work and for living this challenge.
A special thanks goes to: Annual Campaign Chairs Leigh Sudbrink and Robert
Ketner for their new ideas and forward thinking in order to exceed their goal;
Oyster Roast Co-Chairs Daniela Helms and Kim Holleman and their committees
for a record-smashing event in terms of attendance and revenue raised;
Hosts Bonnie and Bynum Hunter for opening their fabulous grounds for the
2011 Oyster Roast; Honorary Chair Shirley Spears for her extra efforts in
reaching out to the community, Kay Cashion for her guidance in our advocacy
efforts for continued state and local funding; Greensboro Guild President Judy
Roy and VP Clay Smith for their determination and successful leadership; Advisor
Magz King and members of the Junior Guild of Family Service – our next
generation of Family Service volunteers; and the Family Service staff for their
daily work to help those in need.
Each of you makes a difference in this world! Thank you! I appreciate
you all.
The High Point Foundation had a great year.
Stan Belk and Alyce Hill had the most successful
annual campaign High Point has ever seen.
Even in this tough economic climate, High
Point truly supported Family Service. In my opinion, that is the beauty of the
High Point community: the generosity of this community continually amazes
me. I would put High Point up against any city in the country in per capita
charitable giving. You can see a physical example in the recently renovated
lobby of Family Service’s Slane Center, thanks to the folks at Furnitureland
South. This type of charity in High Point is the rule rather than the exception.
SUMMER 2011
A Quarterly Update On Family Service Of The Piedmont, Inc.
High Point works hard, but we also like to play hard. Under the direction of
Linda and Tim Ilderton, the High Point Oyster Roast was one of the most successful
ever. Frosty and Catharine Culp were kind enough to host one of High
Point’s best parties. It was a great tribute to our Honorary Chairs, Lin and
Nancy Amos, who are also responsible for starting the Oyster Roast years ago.
With these folks behind you, you can only be successful.
A big thank you also needs to go out to Emilee Brigman and Amanda Covington.
High Point has been working very hard to lay the groundwork for a successful
Guild. This year we made some great strides to raise awareness and
funds with events like Lights of Love and a Middle School Party. Watch this
group under Julie Andrews and Natalie Norcross. There are some really great
things coming.
My passion for Family Service burns brighter today than ever. Six years ago,
when I decided to take a more active role in Family Service, I was already a
firm believer in this agency. I have since been amazed and delighted to witness
the powerful impact Family Service has on our community. I don’t think people
understand how diverse Family Service is. Unfortunately, people typically
find their way to Family Service at the low point of their lives. This outstanding
agency helps people get their lives back on track with dignity intact.
I urge anyone who wants to know more about Family Service to visit
www.safeandhealthyfamilies.com or just get in touch with us to find out how
you can help.
