2 L a C a s a , I n c . 2 Letters from the Director and Board President From Our point of View As we have prepared for the recognition of LaCasa’s 40 th Anniversary I’ve had the opportunity to hear many stories from former staff, board members, volunteers and donors. Our history is an inspiring Larry Gautsche story of personal sacrifice, advocacy and, for many families, the achievement of their dream of financial stability, citizenship or homeownership. LaCasa in 2010 is the result of literally thousands of persons in our community who have shared a vision for personal growth, family stability and neighborhood improvement. Despite a very challenging recession, your support has allowed us to maintain critical educational and counseling services and extend quality affordable housing services to Elkhart. Successful grant applications for housing rehabilitation have expanded our partnerships with Elkhart, Goshen and Elkhart County. LaCasa’s counselors continue to provide knowledgeable foreclosure prevention counseling as a free service. We are excited to announce two important new initiatives in 2010. • In May we will begin a planning process to explore models of comprehensive community economic development with leadership in Elkhart City while at the same time, working with neighborhood leadership to develop a quality of life plan to guide future work in Elkhart. • In June, the Help-A-House program that has so effectively matched volunteers, local donations and grant funds to assist homeowners with repairs will be expanded. New funding from IHCDA will allow us to serve Elkhart County homeowners living outside the City boundaries of Goshen and Elkhart. Thank you for your support for the past 40 years! Thank you for helping to sustain and grow LaCasa’s capacity to respond to needs in our community during the current recession. With your help, as neighbors helping neighbors, we can create a brighter future for all families in our community. —Larry Gautsche, President/CEO On behalf of the Board of Directors of LaCasa, I would like to thank the staff, volunteers, partners, and donors who help us address our mission to “work with individuals and community partners to create opportunity for personal growth, family stability, and neighborhood improvement.” The most visible example of LaCasa’s work comes each May when almost four-hundred volunteers and dozens of businesses volunteer to assist neighbors in fixing up their homes during Help-A-House. Work begins early on a Saturday morning and goes through late afternoon, neighbors helping neighbors build a better community. David B. In this year’s Annual Report you will be able to read from some of these same stories. While your name may not be mentioned, be assured that as a staff member, volunteer, donor or supporter of LaCasa you are part of the story. Carlajo had been divorced for several years, renting an apartment and glad to have a job. Through a chance meeting with LaCasa’s loan originator she learned that with some work, she could eventually qualify to purchase a home. She began to look in her old neighborhood and found that her grandmother’s home was for sale. Using Home Ownership Considering HomeOwnership? Seize the Opportunity! the Elkhart County Lead Hazard Control program along with grants from HOME and Elkhart CDBG, Carlajo’s new home was soon back to better than original condition. With a lot of hard work on her part and many caring LaCasa staff, Carlajo’s dream of owning her own home became a reality. 3 3
