4 Community Building and Organizing Building Relationships, Developing neighborhoods of Choice Paul Bertha Gary Martin Elkhart residents rallied to empower youth through arts, youth that otherwise would never have had the opportunity. It was community at its finest. The evidence of success is that kids showed up. Very few missed classes. They usually wanted to stay longer. By the time the performance came, they were demonstrating teamwork, leadership, courtesy and consideration. Several of them asked “When are we doing this again?” How do you put a price tag on that? —Paul Bertha, Roosevelt Neighborhood Resident and Drama Instructor at Roosevelt’s “Summer Academy” LaCasa was mid-wife at the birth of Northside Neighborhood Association in Goshen 11 years ago. NNA was reactivated four years ago after a gang shooting wake up call. LaCasa’s encouragement, networking and community organizing expertise enabled NNA to pioneer sub-standard housing improvement and crime reduction efforts which are now being implemented throughout the city. Given the challenges we face, NNA could not exist without LaCasa. —Gary Martin, Northside Neighborhood *Residents created the “Summer Academy” after LaCasa sponsored their attendance at a ”NeighborWorks” Community Leadership Conference in San Jose, CA.
Immigration Counseling 5 New Residents Welcomed and Connected to the Community. Isrrael Mujica, a LaCasa Homeownership Counselor, recently attained his U.S. Citizenship. Citizenship • Residency • Family Petitions Albaro, a Permanent Resident, lived and worked in the US for many years. He longed for his wife and children to join him in the US. In 2004 LaCasa counselors filed family petitions to begin the immigration process for his family. However, because of backlogs and delays, Albaro was informed that it could take seven years for his family to immigrate to the US. The only way to speed up the process would be for Albaro to become a US Citizen. He decided to go through the rigorous Naturalization process. In 2006 his hard work paid off; he became a US Citizen. LaCasa counselors assisted Albaro in preparing documents and forms for his family to immigrate. Finally, the family was scheduled for the visa interview in January of 2009. Albaro’s wife, Rosa, and four children were approved for visas and joined Albaro in Goshen. It was a bittersweet moment for the family, though. During the waiting period, Albaro’s son turned 21, too old to obtain a visa with the others. He must wait 10-12 more years in Mexico before he can receive the visa. The family is waiting for the day they will be complete.
