From the Director desk………..
“O wayfarer, is the path worth traveling if it has no thorn? When the flow is not adverse, in
hat is the use of testing the patience of the boatman.’’
The above lines squarely describe our activities where aspires for awn interests and speedy
gain, Where politics is based on sects and castes and leaders seek their own benefits, the task of
fulfilling the objectives of the projects launched by the organization seems quite uphill. Despite this the
colleagues of the organization have made a laudatory effort to translate into concrete reality the
guidelines provided by the donor authorities.
Nehru Yuva Sangthan, Tisi is actively engaged with the all-round development of the rural and
urban people for the past 18 years. From time to time the full hearted support from the local community,
block development district, state and national level authorities is forthcoming. This has led the
organization a special much for itself in the district and state even as a rural oriented organization the
role of national and international donors has been extremely significant in translating the objective of
the organization into concrete reality. From time to time the guidance of their representatives has
proved to be like milestones.
PATH and CARE India through their Sure Start Project have lent momentous support to the
organization’s intervention in bringing about permanent improvement in the complete health of the
newly born babies and pregnant women, behavioral change and enabling the community to have an
access to quality health services. While PACS programme and Uttar Pradesh Health system
Development project’s innovative health programme helped in great measure, CASA’s support enable
us to work for all round community development and mainstreaming the marginalized section in the
matter of employment oriented activities. On the one hand Ministry of Labour, Government of India and
Sarve Shiksha Abhiyan supported in the promotion of child right and mainstreaming education of child
labour, Oxfam India’s Aroh campaign and PACS of DFID enabled us to launch an effective and
inspiring awareness programme creating commotion in both the community and the administrative
circle. Similarly support from Ministry of Environment & Forest, Government of India coupled with the
common man have strengthened our endeavour of environment conservation, promoting and Ganga
Pollution Eradication programme.
Support in the above manner by our colleagues, guides, thinkers, and workers, The
organization is confident to accomplish the goal of happiness, prosperity and peace by continuing to
motivate the disadvantage and the deprived people to lead a dignified life. Looking forword to your
trust, cooperation and affection.
Activities During 2008-09
1. Reproductive & Child Health and Essential Community Services-
The organization conducted a series of activities on providing access to qualitative RCH
services in Telyani Block of Fatehpur district and Lalganj Kheero and Sareni of Raebareli by the
support of UPHSDP and PATH/CARE respectively.
1.2. Meetings of Village Level Service Providers & Mother-
Under the project, in keeping with the principle of let them participate who face the issue “ local
community took part in three development blocks of
Raebareli , viz Lalganj, Kheero and Sareni, where 173
mother committees were formed. Project workers have been
holding regular meetings as per decided dates every month.
Women have at long last found a forum to express
themselves in these meetings and discuss their health
related issues. They have become aware of harmful impact
of certain traditional health related practices and are capable
enough to claim the services on their own apart from solving
complex health problem and promoting appreciative
acceptance of alternative health practices, these mother’s
committees have contributed significantly to generate a spirit
of understanding and participation amongst men on the women’s issues.
1.2 Status of village level health & sanitation committee.
Up till now the role of Panchayts as well as other stake holders including the community on the issues
of mother and new born child was rather indifferent, as a
result of which the beneficial health measures for them used
to be ignored, keeping the mortality rate at child – birth near
constant instead of reducing it keeping this apathy in vine, a
village level health & sanitation committee comprising of the
village pradhan as chairperson & members as ANM, ASHA ,
Anganwadi,Lekhpal, shiksha mitra, Panchayat mitra and six
panchayat member. The committee is the local unit of the
national Rural Health mission 64 such committee has been
formed in the organization operational area. It is with the
help of these committees community’s participation in
preparing annual health work plan, implementation of the
same, management of untied funds with responsiveness
and responsibility, monthly review of ASHA, Anganwadi for quality service accessibility by using
innovation tools is made possible.
1.3 Participation in the Meetings of Rogi Kalan Samitis-
In terms of National Rural Health Mission framework of effective implementation, patient welfare
committees were held with the participation of the staff at the primary/ community health centers. In
these meetings actions are taken to decentralize the concepts of NRHM in order to strategically reach
the benefits of the mission to the vast masses and make structural changes in regard to delivering
qualitative Health Service for the end users. The meetings are surcharged with the participation of
Health Deptt., Child Development, Panchayati Raj Deptt. along with the workers in Sure Start Project
and other partner organizations. This year 36 meeting were organized in three blocks. By means of the
Annual progress Report- 2008-09 NYST 8
notice of the block level officers and a strategy is chalked out meetings communities’ issues are
brought to the take rectifying steps. Even the village level Health and Sanitation Committee Services
are sought and through it a forum is provided for public advocacy.
1.4 Support in the Conducted of Janani Suraksha
Yoajna -
Certain old and harmful health practices related to child
birth and pregnant women are steeped in superstitions and
ignorance, sometimes leading to witchcraft and avoidable
mortality of the mother and child. But NRHM has removed
many misconceived practices and put in place Mother
committees and village level Health and Sanitation
Committees. As a result of this is our operational area viz
Lalganj, Kheero and Sareni block up to 80 percent of
deliveries are institutionalized. Because of this there in a
significant increase in people’s level of trust and the
beneficiaries are in receipt of Rs.1400 by way of economic support as also the facility of conveyance.
1.5 Meetings of Service Provider –
In order to run Sure Start Project effectively service providers are kept well-informed and with their cooperative
support and selection of place and sustainable improvement in the health of mother and
newly born children is attempted at. This is designed to percolate down to the far flung places where
gram panchyats can make these services effectively available. The service providers are expected to
fulfill their responsibility by participating in the forum of the Sure Start Project and also to enable
community’s access to the services. Thus the responsibility level of the service providers ( ASHA,
Anganwadi & ANM ) has increased and the beneficiaries, especially the left outs have had an every
access to these health services.
1.6 Block Level Consortium Meeting-
Consortium meetings are required to be held to bring in sustainable improvement in the health of
mothers and new born children so that all the block level departments can be apprised of the impact of
their department’s services. This meeting aims at qualitative improvement in services offered by service
providers.
1.7 Safe Motherhood Day-
On account of the problem related to pregnancy and child birth, many women earlier had to succumb to
avoidable death. While in developed countries, only one woman dies out of four thousand cases of
child birth, in India out of 64 cases of delivery one woman succumbs to death, With a view to sensitizing
the community on the issues of motherhood, Mother’s Day is celebrated on 11 April each year. Under
Sure Start Project Mother’s Day was celebrated in the village panchyat and primary and community
center in which large number of primary service
providers and stake holders took active part. On this day
magic show, distribution of pamphlets dialogue with the
community and signature campaigns were the main
activities and the slogan ‘’ Hayi vachan hai sabse
sachcha, Rahe surakshit jachcha bachcha’’ was spread
over to the prople at large.
1.8 Athavasa (Eight Month) Ceremony-
Athavasa programme is inspired by the traditional ritual
observed in the rural area, which had steadily gone into
the oblivion. To lend it modern day significance the
ceremony is revived. The ceremony now is observed by
the side of the bride groom in collaboration with the side of the bride. Earlier it was a mere ritualistic
Annual progress Report- 2008-09 NYST 9
formality but now this crucial period in the life of the would mother is taken as the right time to apprise
her as well as her elders on the proper health care that is required, making all the supporting elements
in the circle of the likely birth alert and active. We wish that this unique tradition ceremony should be
modernized to highlight the health need of the hour in the life of the pregnant women so that reduction
in the post natal mortality rate can be had.
1.9 Pradhan Conference
In the three blocks of the operational area, Lalganj, Kheero and Sareni, a one day conference of
Pradhans, Panchyat Mitra and Panchayat Representatives was held, with a view to sensitizing the on
their role and responsibility so that 60% of the Panchyats become effective implementers of various
programmes. The BDOs, MOICs, Field Officers of CARE India, Block Pramukh and other project
workers took part and the head of our organization had a motivational dialogue with them.
All the Pradhans and Members of the health committees learnt that by virtue of the Sure Start
Project awareness has been felt in 40 percent villages and people have started realizing their
responsibility. Till now pregnant women and new born were not inoculated and delivery of child used to
take place at home. But now people are eager to receive the benefits of available services, which has
brought about an appreciable hike in institutional child birth and project workers are helping ANMs and
ASHA workers, which is a sure sign of progress towards the goals set.
All the Pradhan were apprised on the role and responsibility of the health and sanitation committee in
the matter of safe child delivery, sprinkle disinfectants in the wells, and maintaining sanitation around
hand pumps etc.
1.10 ASHA Conference
As we are aware, the role of Asha Bahu amongst 1000
people at village level is very vital in the sphere of mother
and child health. She has direct influence on controlling the
post natal mortality; her indifference in proper discharge of
duties spells emergency, this was the background of
organizing Asha conference in these block to emphasize on
their responsibility. These conferences proved to be an
effective forum for Ashas to voice their points of view and
share their experience mutually. A number of good Ashas in
respect of providing effective and prompt health services
were suitably rewarded by the organization.
1.11 World Breast Feeding Week.-
It is generally observed that on account of old and superstitious practices majority of women do not
breast-feed their children within half an hour of the child
birth. But this very early breast feeding is nectar like and if
continued up to 6 months this makes the baby capable of
resisting various disease. To spread this message
amongst the community, we celebrated breast-feeding
week from 1 st to 7 th August 2008 in the entire operational
area. While the community has better level of awareness
now, the service providers also stand to gain by enhancing
level of capacity building inputs. In this campaign mothers’
in-law were sensitized through mothers’ committees. By
means of door to door visit the benefits of breast-feedings
were communicated. The husbands of pregnant women
were involved in wall-writing and Healthy Baby show and Quiz events were arranged.
Annual progress Report- 2008-09 NYST 10
1.12 Innovative initiative for reduction in mortality rate of mothers & new borns-
A health post was organized in Adampur village of Teliyani
development block of district Fatehpur in collaboration with letter
Uttar Pradesh Health system development project Lucknow .
The Health Post was aimed at improving the health level
of women and men to ultimately extend this to convert into
reduction of post-natal mortality rate of mothers and newly born
babies. To attain the target, women’s health was checked and
appropriately counseled on taking to balanced/notorious diet.
Besides, pre and post natal medical check-up of pregnant
women was done. In the Health Post, both male and lady
doctors were engaged to test, inoculate and counsel on health
issues. Medicines were distributes free of cost. A total of 10864
women and newly born children were examined during the year.
A total of 317 persons with alarming health signals were referred to primary health centre and district
Hospital, which led to several lives saved. The post birth visit of workers also led several cases referred
to hospital. In the entire year 12 Health check camps were organized for examination,
inoculation/vaccination, IFA distribution and proper counseling.
Main Achievements –
1. Formation of 173 mother committees.
2. Formation of 64 village Health & Sanitation Committees.
3. Increase in vaccination of pregnant women from 16% to 48%.
4. Increase in IFA consumption from 33% to 97%.
5. Increase from 6% to 100% in the matter of cutting umbilical cord within one hour of
delivery.
6. Increase of 0% to 67% in the matter of treatment after cutting umbilical cord.
7. Increase of 0% to 67% in the matter of wiping dry & wrapping cotton cloth around the newborn.
8. Increase of 0% to 97% in the matter of prompt breast feed within one hour of delivery.
9. Increase from 13% to 71% in the matter of complete breast feeding the new-born baby.
10. Increase from 7% to 88% in the matter of administering bath to the baby within 3 days of
delivery.
11. Increase from 6% to 80% in institutional deliveries.
12.Availability of emergency vehicle in each village by Health Committees to help in
institutional child birth.
2. Education & Child Right
The organization continues to accord pride of place to the issue of education and child rights,
because the literacy rate of Fatehpur district is 58.84 percent, where male and female literacy rates are
73.10percent and 44.60 percent respectively. It is evident from this, that the level of education in the
district is deplorable. Due to discrimination women remain illiterate.
In keeping with the right to education, promotion of child rights has been the main issue, which
includes mainstreaming the education of school deop-outs and accessing welfare message launching by
the state for them. Towards attaining these objectives the following activities were carried out.
Annual progress Report- 2008-09 NYST 11
2.1 Management of special Child Labour Schools-
Fatehpur district is backward where per capita income is very
low and huge unemployment exists. For making both ends
meet the head of the family unscrupulously compels young
ones of 6 to 14 years of age to support the family kitty As a
result of this in their age of formation children are driven to
adopt such activities as rag picking helping at automobile
repair shops and wayside restaurants taking note of the
foregoing the organization has been running three schools of
50 children falling in the age group of 6 to 14 years with the
support of Labour Deptt, Fatehpur in these Child Labour
schools children get education upto class 5 with free
stationary and books as also mid day meal along with monthly
scholarship. Their families are supported by formation of
SHGs to rehabilitate them or supplement their income.
2.2 Residential Bridge Course Under Sarva Shiksha
Abhiyan
With the support of Basic Education Deptt. NYST Tisi
conducts a residential Bridge Course in Premnagar out of
Airayan Block of Distt, Fatehpur main objectline was impart
elementary education to all the children, since it is their
fundamental right. It is a challenge to bring every child in the
educational mainstream for this residential school, food,
health check-up and free stationery and books are being
provided to them. This six month long Bridge Course is
designed to take over the children to regular schools.
2.3 Alternative & Innovative Education Centre
There are 161 brick fields operating in different development blocks of Fatehpr district, Labour from
Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Orissa migrate along with their families. They sacrfice their
formative age at
the altar of
livelihood,
necessary for
survival. With the
support of Distt.
Basic Education
Deptt, the
organization has
started an
alternative and
innovative
Education Centre at 10 brick kilns situated in Hathagaon and
Bhitaura blocks of the district where 25 children in each batch in the age group 9 to 14 years are
educated by trained instructors. Thus children receive education despite their day long working schedule
their parents now has a smile on faces, for children would now be educated.
Annual progress Report- 2008-09 NYST 12
2.4 Management of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya-
In India women literacy is abysmally low as compared to other developed countries is caused by the
