FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT<br />
of the XX International Meeting of the Association for<br />
Cooperation in Research and Integral Development of<br />
the Musaceae (Bananas and Plantains)<br />
September 9-13th, <strong>2013</strong><br />
The ACORBAT <strong>2013</strong> Organizing Committee is pleased to inform the scientific community<br />
and the banana producers the following:<br />
The XX ACORBAT <strong>2013</strong> International Meeting, the most important academic and<br />
commercial banana event in the world, will be held in September 9-13, <strong>2013</strong>, in Fortaleza,<br />
Ceará, Brazil, with the main topic “ACORBAT: 40 years sharing Science and Technology”.<br />
The official languages will be English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, with<br />
simultaneous translation for all conferences.<br />
The Organizing Committee is formed by a President, two Vice-Presidents and<br />
Coordinators: Finances, Technical-Scientific, Logistic, Operative, Marketing, Public Relations<br />
and Social Events. The Technical-Scientific Committee has 16 members and 66 national and<br />
international expert reviewers.<br />
The academic program of the event includes:<br />
International experts who will deliver talks on selected topics.<br />
Two main conferences: An Opening conference about ACORBAT’s 40 years of history,<br />
and a Closure conference about ACORBAT’s impact on the development of Bananas<br />
and Plantains.<br />
National and international experts will talk about the following topics: 1) Production<br />
systems, 2) Breeding and use of genetic diversity, 3) Physiology, climate conditions<br />
and production, 4) Post-harvest and processing, 5) Pests and emerging diseases of<br />
economic importance, 6) Marketing: tendencies and opportunities, 7) Sigatokas, 8)<br />
Strategies for agrochemical reduction.<br />
Oral and poster presentations in selected topics.<br />
Symposia related to relevant areas for global sector of bananas and plantains.<br />
The oral and poster presentations will be in the following areas:<br />
Breeding and use of genetic diversity: exploration of genetic diversity; genome and its<br />
implications on breeding; strategies for varieties development.<br />
Markets: tendencies and opportunities: market; marketing and commercialization (carbon<br />
footprint, denomination of origin, fair trade and added value).<br />
Pests and emerging diseases of economic importance: emergent and quarantine pests<br />
and diseases; sustainable management, biology and epidemiology of pests and diseases.
Physiology, climate conditions and production: climate and production; efficient use of<br />
water; nutrition and fertilization.<br />
Post-harvest and Processing: physiology and post-harvest technology; agronomic and postharvest<br />
management; post-harvest pathology; processing.<br />
Production systems: organic; intensive production systems; agroforestry systems,<br />
intercropping and low input systems.<br />
Sigatokas: genetic diversity, evolution and pathogen dissemination; alternative methods for<br />
management; fungicide sensitivity; chemical control innovations.<br />
Strategies for agrochemical reduction: biological control and bio inputs; strategies for the<br />
improvement of pest and disease tolerance; tools for helping decision-making on<br />
agrochemical use.<br />
CALLS FOR CONTRIBUTIONS<br />
Research papers can be sent from January 15 to March 31, <strong>2013</strong>, as extended abstracts.<br />
The contributions can be written in any of the official languages and Portuguese, with an<br />
additional summary in English. When submitting, the authors may indicate the type of<br />
presentation: oral or poster. The scientific committee will review the papers and also decide<br />
on the type of presentation.<br />
The Technical-Scientific Committee of the XX International Meeting / ACORBAT<br />

EXPOACORBAT<br />
An exhibition on products, services, equipments, instruments and agroindustrial<br />
machinery will be held in parallel with the technical and scientific event. Several national and<br />
international companies involved in banana production will be present. Other events will also<br />
take place at the as XX Frutal and XV Agroflores.<br />
