FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
of the XX International Meeting of the Association for
Cooperation in Research and Integral Development of
the Musaceae (Bananas and Plantains)
September 9-13th, 2013
The ACORBAT 2013 Organizing Committee is pleased to inform the scientific community
and the banana producers the following:
The XX ACORBAT 2013 International Meeting, the most important academic and
commercial banana event in the world, will be held in September 9-13, 2013, in Fortaleza,
Ceará, Brazil, with the main topic “ACORBAT: 40 years sharing Science and Technology”.
The official languages will be English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, with
simultaneous translation for all conferences.
The Organizing Committee is formed by a President, two Vice-Presidents and
Coordinators: Finances, Technical-Scientific, Logistic, Operative, Marketing, Public Relations
and Social Events. The Technical-Scientific Committee has 16 members and 66 national and
international expert reviewers.
The academic program of the event includes:
International experts who will deliver talks on selected topics.
Two main conferences: An Opening conference about ACORBAT’s 40 years of history,
and a Closure conference about ACORBAT’s impact on the development of Bananas
and Plantains.
National and international experts will talk about the following topics: 1) Production
systems, 2) Breeding and use of genetic diversity, 3) Physiology, climate conditions
and production, 4) Post-harvest and processing, 5) Pests and emerging diseases of
economic importance, 6) Marketing: tendencies and opportunities, 7) Sigatokas, 8)
Strategies for agrochemical reduction.
Oral and poster presentations in selected topics.
Symposia related to relevant areas for global sector of bananas and plantains.
The oral and poster presentations will be in the following areas:
Breeding and use of genetic diversity: exploration of genetic diversity; genome and its
implications on breeding; strategies for varieties development.
Markets: tendencies and opportunities: market; marketing and commercialization (carbon
footprint, denomination of origin, fair trade and added value).
Pests and emerging diseases of economic importance: emergent and quarantine pests
and diseases; sustainable management, biology and epidemiology of pests and diseases.

Physiology, climate conditions and production: climate and production; efficient use of
water; nutrition and fertilization.
Post-harvest and Processing: physiology and post-harvest technology; agronomic and postharvest
management; post-harvest pathology; processing.
Production systems: organic; intensive production systems; agroforestry systems,
intercropping and low input systems.
Sigatokas: genetic diversity, evolution and pathogen dissemination; alternative methods for
management; fungicide sensitivity; chemical control innovations.
Strategies for agrochemical reduction: biological control and bio inputs; strategies for the
improvement of pest and disease tolerance; tools for helping decision-making on
agrochemical use.
CALLS FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
Research papers can be sent from January 15 to March 31, 2013, as extended abstracts.
The contributions can be written in any of the official languages and Portuguese, with an
additional summary in English. When submitting, the authors may indicate the type of
presentation: oral or poster. The scientific committee will review the papers and also decide
on the type of presentation.

EXPOACORBAT
An exhibition on products, services, equipments, instruments and agroindustrial
machinery will be held in parallel with the technical and scientific event. Several national and
international companies involved in banana production will be present. Other events will also
take place at the as XX Frutal and XV Agroflores.
