To that end, we accomplished some key goals: • Achieved the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations “Standards for Excellence” Certification. The Standards for Excellence program sets benchmarks beyond the minimum legal requirements of how nonprofits should operate providing accountability to both funders and those the nonprofit serves. • Formed a partnership with the Junior League of Baton Rouge to create “TLC For Caregivers.” These socials offer families an opportunity to relax and have fun. • Received grants to initiate funding of the Alzheimer’s Services Respite Center scheduled to open in mid-2007. • Increased membership in the Rosemary Society by 21 members and $110,000 (over a five year period). You will read more about each of these key goals later in this Annual Report. I would like to point out that Alzheimer’s Services is not affiliated with a national organization nor are we a United Way agency, therefore, every dollar raised stays here in our community to help the many families coping with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder. As you review this report, you will see that the majority of those dollars are directed into program services versus management expenses. I ask that each of you become an ambassador for Alzheimer’s Services by helping us increase community awareness about the education and support services we provide to memory impaired individuals, as well as caregivers and professionals. The mission of Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area is to provide education and support services to memory impaired individuals, as well as caregivers and professionals; and to enhance community awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. What is Alzheimer’s Disease? Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative disease of the brain that results in memory loss, impaired thinking, difficulty finding the right word when speaking, and personality changes. During its course, there is a continual loss of nerve cells in areas of the brain that are crucial to memory and other mental functions. Core Programs & Services • HelpLine telephone support for disease information, caregiving issues and community resources • Quarterly newsletter with caregiving, disease and Alzheimer’s Services event news • Video and print Resource Library • Caregiver Network support meetings held monthly throughout the 10-parish area • Education programs including monthly Lunch ‘N Learn series, Sharing the Journey class and annual Education Conference for professionals • Caregiver Respite Program to assist families in covering expenses incurred from using sitters, adult day centers and other care programs • Safe Return Program, an identification bracelet program to help identify, locate and return individuals who wander from their residence • TLC for Caregivers social events designed for Alzheimer’s patients to enjoy with their family mission and programs Lunch -n- Learn Educational Event Ice Cream Social Walk/Run to Remember Page 3
