The Dream Sometimes dreams really do come true. Such is the case for the Alzheimer’s Respite Center which is scheduled to open in 2007. The concept of The Respite Center began as a solution to a recurring request from families that there be “a place” that they could feel comfortable leaving their loved one with dementia for a few hours a week. Ideally, these few hours of “respite” from the day-to-day responsibilities of care giving would provide families both the opportunity and peace of mind needed to take care of simple things like grocery shopping, going to the doctor or sharing a few hours of fun with friends. Individuals enrolled in The Respite Center would participate in activities based on their cognitive abilities – for example, take a class on using the computer and internet, plant an herb garden, take a trip to a museum or art gallery, or simply reminisce about the “good old days”. The Reality Research suggests that ongoing use of respite services helps caregivers to continue in the care giving role and delay institutionalization of a person with dementia, while preserving caregiver health. Alzheimer’s Services believes The Respite Center will offer families coping with dementia the break they need, plus allow them to keep their loved one at home longer, delaying the overwhelming expenses associated with long term care. Pennington Foundation, Junior League of Baton Rouge, Inc., and William Edwin Montan Trust. In addition, the blueprint for the remodeling work to be done for The Respite Center was completed. The remodeling will also enable Alzheimer’s Services to expand the Conference Room and Resource Library. Construction will begin in early 2007 and The Respite Center is projected to open in August 2007.
